Godzilla 2 Is Happening, Set For 2018 Release

Bryan Cranston Aaron Johnson Elizabeth Olsen Ken Watanabe

The success of the franchise reboot Godzilla earlier this year has led to Legendary Pictures greenlighting a sequel, and they have announced a release date of June 8th 2018. In July at San Diego Comic-Con Legendary also announced that the sequel would feature Godzilla's fellow giant beastie friends, Rodan (a dinosaur), Ghidorah (a dragon) and Mothra (erm, a moth)

After over a decade in arrested development, Godzilla was released in May of this year, and was a hit amongst critics and punters. Featuring Bryan Cranston alongside young actors Aaron Taylor-Wood and Elizabeth Olsen (who will both be appearing next in Marvel's Avengers 2: Age of Ultron) the film was set in present day America, Hawaii and Japan and Godzilla appeared as a secret the US government had been hiding for sixty years- a conspiracy theorist's dream, or nightmare, depending on how you look at it.

Gareth Edwards Reboots The King Of Monsters, 'Godzilla'

Bryan Cranston Aaron Johnson

It was 1954 when Gojira first hit the big screen in Ishiro Honda's now iconic monster movie, made as a reply to the USA dropping two atom-bombs on Japan less than a decade earlier. But American audiences never saw that aspect of the movie, since the film was drastically re-edited two years later to remove all references to the war while adding American star Raymond Burr. The creature's name also morphed into Godzilla.

And the franchise has been resilient ever since, with literally hundreds of movies, short films and TV shows continuing or retelling the story. In most of them, Godzilla is battling other monsters like Mothra, King Kong or of course Mechagodzilla. One of the monster's most classic appearances is in the 1969 short Bambi Meets Godzilla. And the original 1954 Japanese movie was finally released worldwide in 2005.

'Godzilla' Is More Growling Than Roaring Success, But Still... [Trailer]

Bryan Cranston Aaron Johnson Gareth Edwards Juliette Binoche Ken Watanabe Sally Hawkins

It's going to be a big weekend for Godzilla: the monster action reboot has been teasing its entrance for months with irresistibly gloomy and stylised posters and trailers, whetting our appetite for an early summer movie with brains and bite. If that wasn't enough, the film has been earned a strong base of enthusiastic (but realistic) reviews that are sure to convince the more reluctant moviegoer that Gareth Edwards retake of the well-trodden tale is worth parting with cash for.

Still burned by the memory of Roland Emmerich's 1998 disaster of a disaster movie, many fans and critics didn't have particularly high hopes for a reboot even 15 years later. Bryan Cranston and Aaron Taylor-Johnson take centre stage as father-son duo Joe and Ford Brody who find themselves up against not Godzilla but some weird spider-dino hybrids called MUTO in this super smashy-smashy flick.

Critics Disappointed With The New "Godzilla"

Bryan Cranston Aaron Johnson

Gather up your supplies and cover up in your basements, folks, because Godzilla is almost here (or you could just go with the more traditional option of purchasing a ticket for the movie). You probably know the story of the gigantic radioactive lizard already and if not… how? With the film hitting theaters tomorrow, May 15, it’s time to check out some reviews and see what the critics are saying.

Godzilla Poster
It'll still be a box office success, but critics think the new Godzilla is still a bit lackluster.

New York Daily News’ review gives a nod to Cranston’s acting (of course) and the CGI work on Godzilla. However, thanks to an uninspired story and low stakes, the movie overall is pegged as “dull” and “underwhelming”

Prepare For One Big Visual Foreplay From Gareth Edwards' 'Godzilla'

Gareth Edwards Bryan Cranston Aaron Johnson

With less than a month to go before Godzilla remerges on the big screen, director Gareth Edwards is getting ready to present his version of the famous monster and it promises to be unlike any other incarnation. In the latest featurette for the film, Edwards discusses why his Godzilla has a more dark and serious tone than perhaps we would expect from a movie about the famous Kaiju.

Godzilla movie posterThis Godzilla is a lot darker than before

Edward’s is hoping to avoid any of the traps that previous Godzilla filmmakers have fallen into, when presenting the monster on the big screen. Instead of going the campy or overblown route, reliant too heavily on special effects, Edwards's Godzilla is dark, serious and owing much more to the original Japanese version.

The extended trailer for Godzilla has been released and shows the large lizard at his very worst: causing Tsunamis, destroying cities and taking on the US armed forces.

Advertised by Legendary pictures as "An epic rebirth to Toho's iconic Godzilla, this spectacular adventure pits the world's most famous monster against malevolent creatures who, bolstered by humanity's scientific arrogance, threaten our very existence." This upcoming movie appears to be less tongue-in-cheek than the 1998 version starring Matthew Broderick but certainly boasts a larger budget and more terrifying creature as the central focus of this action movie.

The Scarlet Witch And Quicksilver 'Avengers Age Of Ultron' Look. What's The Verdict?

Elizabeth Olsen Aaron Johnson

Last night we got our first look at the designs for the Scarlet Witch and Quicksliver from the upcoming ‘The Avengers: Age of Ultron’ movie. Now we knew Joss Whedon had to put his own spin on the classic comic book characters but what’s the verdict? Has time been kind to our favourite super powered twins?

Details of the upcoming Avengers sequel Age of Ultron are beginning to trickle out and cast member Mark Ruffalo has given fans the biggest hints yet as to the direction in which Joss Whedon is taking the big-budget movie.

Shooting on the movie began in South Africa last month, with Ruffalo's character The Hulk very much at the center of things. We know that a giant green Hulk head on a pole was used to terrorize extras - but was Ruffalo out there too?

"Avengers: Age Of Ultron": New And Improved (Maybe) Scarlet Witch And Quicksilver Character Design Revealed

Elizabeth Olsen James Spader Aaron Johnson

The Scarlet Witch of the Marvel cinematic universe doesn’t look too faithful to her comic book counterpart, but fans should probably still be glad that she and brother/co-conspiritor Quicksilver are making it into the movie franchise. Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver make regular appearances in the comics and it will be interesting to see how Joss Whedon and co. bring them into the Age of Ultron plot.
For now, those interested will have to settle for the concept art for the two characters, which was recently revealed in the ABC special Marvel Studios: Assembling a Universe. The designs for the two characters might have some hardcore fans up in arms, but generally, they look appropriate for the Avengers movie going crowd.

Elizabeth Olsen
Elizabeth Olsen has been chosen for the role of Quicksilver.

Quicksilver’s look doesn’t seem to have undergone too many changes, but then it’s hard to make a more basic version of a blue bodycon outfit and windswept hair. So the cinematic Quicksilver will resemble a Fantastic Four team member, without any of the uniform details. Disappointingly, it looks like the design team has also done away with his trademark white lightning across the chest (as well as the white hair,) but other than that, there hasn’t been much tweaking here.

Trained as a visual effects specialist, Edwards rose to prominence in 2011 when he won best director at the British Independent Film Awards for his debut feature film Monsters, which was made on a budget of £500,000 and edited in his home. "I was thinking I don't belong here - these are legends of cinema, what am I doing? I'm from Nuneaton!" the British filmmaker joked, regarding the movie's high profile cast and crew.

Other too-close races include actor (Matthew Mcconaughey vs Chiwetel Ejiofor), supporting actor (Jared Leto vs Barkhad Abdi) and supporting actress (Lupita Nyong'o vs Jennifer Lawrence). The only sure thing is Cate Blanchett for Best Actress. And that Gravity will mop up all the technical awards. Brits Take The Lead! 2013 Sees America Ship In Overseas Talent

Idris Elba Henry Cavill Chiwetel Ejiofor Benedict Cumberbatch Daniel Day Lewis Andrew Garfield Tom Hiddleston Dominic West Ben Barnes Max Irons Nicholas Hoult Aaron Johnson

It used to be that British actors were traditionally cast by Hollywood filmmakers as villains; in endless kids' Disney flicks we'd hear exaggeratedly posh English voices coming out of the most evil of witches ('Snow White'), scary giant octopuses ('The Little Mermaid') and murderous lions ('The Lion King'), and even the creators of some of the biggest blockbusters such as 'Die Hard' and 'The Silence Of The Lambs' scoured the UK for the perfect sinister accent.

However, now the Brits are playing the good guys with a surge of overseas talent showcasing their well-practised foreign accents over the past few years - even one of the most American flicks of 2012, Steven Spielberg's 'Lincoln' cast London born Daniel Day-Lewis as the iconic US President. Here are our four biggest British stars that have been making their mark in Hollywood with seminal roles over the past and coming months.

'Kick Ass 2' Does Exactly 'What It Says On The Tin', So Why Did Jim Carrey Withdraw His Support?

Jim Carrey Aaron Johnson Chloe Moretz Star Wars

Jim Carrey has withdrawn his support from Kick-Ass 2 claiming, via Twitter, that 'in all good conscience I cannot support that level of violence'. He claims the reason behind his decision to withdraw is due to the Sandy Hook shootings.

The Sandy Hook shootings took place at a high school in December 2012. Twenty students and six members of teaching staff were murdered by a lone gun-man. The incident caused an outcry for gun laws in the US to be restricted.;

Since the shootings, Carrey has been one of the loudest advocates of restricted gun laws. He claims that as a result of these events and his own political opinion he no longer wishes to support Kick-Ass 2, whereby he will still be appearing in the completed film but will not be attending any publicity events which promote it.

Has Jim Carrey Shot Himself In The Foot With 'Kick-Ass 2' Renunciation?

Jim Carrey Aaron Johnson Chloe Moretz Christopher Mintz-Plasse Donald Faison

Jim Carrey will next star in the much-anticipated sequel to 2010's Kick-Ass, imaginatively called Kick-Ass 2, which is due out later this summer. While the rest of the cast and crew get ready to promote the film and do their bit to ensure it is a success, Carrey has decided in an act of non-violent protest that he will not be joining his crew-mates as they lobby for the film.

Carrey is a striden campaigner for stricter gun control in the USA and in the wake of the tragic school shootings at Sandy Hook, he has decided not to support the film, announcing his decision on Twitter. On Sunday (June 23) he posted on to his feed; “I did "Kickass" a month b4 Sandy Hook and now in all good conscience I cannot support that level of violence," adding in another Tweet, "my apologies to others involved with the film. I am not ashamed of it but recent events have caused a change in my heart.”

A noble move yes, but Carrey may have accidentally shot himself in the foot because now people are demanding that the star put his money where his mouth is and if he really is as opposed to the movie he says he is, then why not give away the fee he received. Others saw it as a direct attack on the film and should box office takings and intrest in the movie begin to fall, the blame will no doubt be placed squarely on Carrey. Others meanwhile just didn't understand Carrey's logic, including Mark Millar - the writer of the Kick-Ass graphic novel, and how he managed to blur the lines between fiction and reality, as well as questioning why he chose to single out one occurrence as his reason behind denouncing the film.

Kick Ass 2 Trailer

Dave Lizewski is Kick-Ass, a real superhero who's been trying to live a normal life as a high school student alongside his younger counterpart Mindy, also known as Hit-Girl. However, his escapades fighting and killing crime boss Frank D'Amico has inspired a generation of masked crime-fighters to band together as an alliance led by Colonel Stars and Stripes to protect the streets of New York. Kick-Ass and Hit-Girl decide to don their costumes again when news of Red Mist, D'Amico's son who is now known as supervillain The Motherf*****, assembling an army to destroy them reaches them. However, the hero duo have other things to worry about when the NYPD decide they've had enough of cleaning up the mess of the city's masked protectors and so vow to arrest every costume donning person on the streets. Hit-Girl is apprehended and forced to give up her moniker, and so Kick-Ass must join superhero league Justice Forever in order to combat the imminent uprising of the new formidable evil.

Based on the comic books of the same name by Mark Millar and John Romita. Jr and following on from 2010's 'Kick-Ass' directed by Matthew Vaughn ('X-Men: First Class', 'Stardust', 'Layer Cake'), 'Kick-Ass 2' is the thrilling sequel seeing Kick-Ass and Hit-Girl older and tougher than ever before. It has been directed and written this time by Jeff Wadlow ('Never Back Down', 'Cry_Wolf') and is set for release on August 16th 2013.

Chatroom Review

Weak
There's a great idea here, but this awkward and dated film struggles to bring the cyberspace experience to life in the form of a gritty teen thriller. The result is intriguing but never as scary or emotional as it's trying to be.

William (Johnson) is a troubled rich kid in North London who strains against the success of his novelist mother (Dodds). Obsessed with suicide, he spends his hours in online chatrooms, creating one that attracts four members: equally bored rich kid Eva (Poots), shy and lonely Jim (Beard), needy Emily (Murray) and Mo (Kaluuya), who struggles with unwanted urges. But it soon becomes clear that William is a predator who's out to unsettle and derail everyone around him. Will they catch on soon enough to stop his nefarious plan?

Nowhere Boy Review

Extraordinary
This beautifully written and directed biopic has a strong ring of truth to it, mainly due to Taylor-Wood's artistic approach to filmmaking. It also features extremely complex characters and a remarkably vivid collection of events.

In 1955 Liverpool, John Lennon (Johnson) is a troubled 15-year-old, raised by his Aunt Mimi and Uncle George (Scott Thomas and Threlfall) without knowing that his wayward mother Julia (Duff) lives just around the corner. But everything's going to change, and while he tries to balance these parental relationships he's also discovering rock 'n' roll. He teams with his pal Pete (Bolt) to form a skiffle band called The Quarrymen. And interest in the band heats up when talented musicians Paul and George (Sangster and Bell) join them.

Dummy Review

Good
An astute debut for first-time feature director Thompson, this offbeat British drama has a striking cast that remains likeable even when the story teeters out of balance.

Preteen Jack (Grant) is struggling to cope with the death of his mother, the flamboyant free-spirit Elsa (Bradley in flashbacks). Besides taking on her role in the house, he has secretly dressed a mannequin in her clothes to keep him company. Meanwhile, his 18-year-old brother Danny (Johnson) thinks he can take on the parenting roles, although he clearly expects Jack to take care of himself while he spends time on both his girlfriend (Catherwood) and his budding DJ career.

Shanghai Knights Review

Very Good

Jackie Chan told me in an interview last year (which I failed to get written up -- sorry!) that the sequel to his kung-fu comedy-Western "Shanghai Noon" was "five times better than the first one." I didn't believe him. Jackie, I apologize.

Riding high on Chan's chemistry with Owen Wilson -- reigning king of the acerbic ad-lib -- "Shanghai Knights" is hilariously tongue-in-cheek and packed with comical homages to everything from the Keystone Kops and Harry Houdini to The Beatles and "Taxi Driver."

Although it might not quite measure up to Chan's claim of quintuple the quality, it is one of those rare multiplex delights: A sequel that bests its predecessor in nearly every way.
