If anyone needed convincing that Aaron Paul is well and truly typecast as Jesse Pinkman from Breaking Bad, then one look at his press run for Need for Speed should do the trick: the actor has been talking about a possible return to the hit meth drama by starring in the prequel spin-off, Better Call Saul. But should he be going back to the franchise that made career what it is today?
Aaron Paul and Bryan Cranston as Jesse and Walter White in Breaking Bad
Breaking Bad was and will forever be remembered as one of the finest shows ever to grace the small screen, but if Paul wants to shake off that Jesse tag ever, perhaps distancing himself from Better Call Saul would be a wiser move. What’s more is that spin-offs have a tendency to be – for want of a better word – rubbish.
There’s every chance that Vince Gilligan et al will manage to sully the legacy Breaking Bad left behind by doing a botch job on this prequel, centering on everyone’s favourite corrupt lawyer, Saul Goodman, played lovingly by Bob Odenkirk.
"Anything Vince is involved with, I'm there," Paul has said while promoting his new movie, indicating strongly that if the opportunity arises, he’d love to star. "I owe him my entire career. And the idea of jumping into the skin of Jesse Pinkman again in his lighter days — because it's all a prequel — it would be fun." (Metro)
Vince Gilligan, too, the creator of Breaking Bad, has expressed in interest in bringing Paul back to play drug-addled, coming-of-age Jesse Pinkman. "They’re off making big movies and doing Broadway plays and whatnot, and that’s exactly the way it should be. That is a high-class problem that we will have to contend with as we go forward with Better Call Saul, if we do indeed want to touch base with some of these characters."
