Mike And Dave Need Wedding Dates Review

Weak

Watching this gross-out comedy, it's clear that the gifted cast and crew had a great time making it. Scenes are packed with wildly ridiculous improvisation, as the script throws characters into some genuinely outrageous situations. And yet it's never actually funny. The longer the film goes on, the more the audience will wonder why they don't feel in on the joke.

It's loosely based on the true story of chucklehead brothers Mike and Dave (Adam Devine and Zac Efron), whose parents (Stephen Root and Stephanie Faracy) tell them they can't go stag to the wedding of their sister (Sugar Lyn Beard) in Hawaii. They have to find dates to calm down the antics that have ruined family events for years. So Mike and Dave put an ad on Craigslist, and it goes viral, drawing the attention of slacker flatmates Tatiana and Alice (Aubrey Plaza and Anna Kendrick). Pretending to be nice girls, they win over Mike and Dave and head to Hawaii for the big event. But the girls are even more anarchic than the boys. So it's no surprise that a wave of disruptive mayhem follows.

Basically this is a simple coming-of-age story, structured like a standard romantic-comedy that plays out in a series of messy set-pieces. Every beat of the plot is predictable, and the big surprise is that the filmmakers seem terrified of genuine sexuality. Despite using sex and nudity as the (ahem!) butt of most jokes, the film is childish and even prudish. And it doesn't help that virtually all of the gags are obvious and cheap.

Ice Age: Collision Course Review

Good

With its fifth feature-length adventure, this franchise continues its preposterous journey at full tilt. As before, it's the zippy writing, lively vocal work and colourful animation that hold the interest. The story is merely a framework on which the cast and crew can hang a series of rapid-fire jokes, pop culture references and nonsensical action sequences. And it's still mindless fun.

After their previous escapades, the expanding herd of prehistoric critters is living a happy life together, thinking about love. Mammoths Manny and Ellis (voiced by Ray Romano and Queen Latifah) are struggling with the idea that their daughter Peaches (Keke Palmer) has fallen for the too-cheerful Julius (Adam Devine). Sid the sloth (John Leguizamo) has just been dumped and feels like he'll never find a partner. And tigers Diego and Shira (Denis Leary and Jennifer Lopez) worry that their violent nature will make them terrible parents. Then suddenly there's a bigger issue to worry about: a giant asteroid is heading for Earth, threatening them with extinction. With the help of nutty weasel Buck (Simon Pegg), they come up with an idea to save the planet. They also discover a magical place called Geotopia, ruled by the groovy Shangri Llama (Jesse Tyler Ferguson).

Yes, the plot is utterly insane, especially as it is driven by the antics of franchise star Scrat, who discovers a flying saucer in the ice, activates it and heads into space, where his acorn-hunting antics trigger all sorts of mayhem back on Earth. But then this series has never had anything to do with science or biology, throwing random animals together (the dinosaurs make another appearance) for comical value while cranking up whatever suspense the writers can think of to add some momentum. They also of course pack scenes with sweet "family values" moments, plus a sideswipe at climate change deniers who refuse to acknowledge the possibility of impending doom.

Zac Efron Celebrates The Love Between Mike And Dave

Zac Efron Adam DeVine

After Bad Grandpa and Neighbors 2 (aka Bad Neighbours 2), he's now starring in Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates alongside Pitch Perfect's Adam DeVine. "This last year has been very fun," Efron says. "I was looking to do dramas, then all of a sudden after Neighbors came out people started calling me for comedies. It happened kind of all at once, and it's the last thing I expected, to be honest. I never dreamt in a million years I'd be working with Seth Rogen or Adam DeVine or Anna Kendrick. So it's all a bit surreal for me."

Surprisingly, this new movie is based on a true story, and Efron says that about 80 percent of what's on-screen really happened, including the raunchiest and most far-fetched scenes. "Adam and I play hard-partying, crazy dudes who ruin family events," Efron explains. "Then they were given the final ultimatum to bring two good girls to their sister's wedding in Hawaii." Kendrick and Aubrey Plaza play these seemingly nice girls, who turn out to be even more raucous than Mike and Dave.

Pitch Perfect 2 - International Trailer

Suspended after an unfortunate incident of accidental nudity during a performance of Miley Cyrus' 'Wrecking Ball', the spunky all-girls a cappella singing group the Barden Bellas are subsequently replaced by European champions Das Sound Machine. They've got a lot of work to do if they want to win the World Championships and beat their rivals, and while they've certainly got both the attitude and more than enough talent having previously succeeded at winning the National stakes, whether or not their ideas can bring them further fortune is another matter. Nonetheless, they have each other, and that's the most important thing for them to hold on to right now as now they face more than just embarrassment and Europeans, but prejudice and heavy doubt from the organisers.

Pitch Perfect 2 - Super Bowl TV Spot

The Barden Bellas are back after their impressive victory in a national a cappella chorus competition, where they proved the strength of girl power over some of the biggest choirs in the country. Beca, Emily, Chloe, Aubrey, Cynthia-Rose, Stacie, Lilly, Jessica and Fat Amy have got bigger fish to fry these days, as they eye up global competition ahead of the daunting international contest. They may have bags of confidence, but as no American chorus has ever managed to land the coveted prize before, it may not be enough to get them through this time. Nonetheless, it's time these girls tested their odds against the greatest collective voices on the planet, even if their new rivals are showing some seemingly matchless talent.

Reasons Why Andy The Manny Is 'Modern Family's' Best Character

Adam DeVine Sarah Hyland

Andy AKA the Modern Family manny, is fast becoming one of the most popular characters in the series. He’s revitalised season 5 of the hit show with his particular brand of loveable dorkishness and far from being annoying (as we had initially worried he may be) he’s emerged as an integral cast member.  He's also super popular with fans of the show, who are hoping to see more of him in Modern Family Season 6.  We are too, particularly with the cliffhanger that the Modern Family finale left us with regarding Andy and Haley!

But just why do we love Andy so much?  Here's just a couple of reasons.

Pitch Perfect Review

Essential

You can call this Glee meets Mean Girls if you want to, but this riotously intelligent comedy is much better than that. With one of the funniest scripts of the year, the film keeps us laughing all the way through, never running out of witty gags even when the rather predictable plot kicks into gear. But then, we never really care where the story's going when getting there is this much fun. And honestly, we never want this movie to end.

Anna Kendrick stars as Beca, a young woman who would rather mix mash-up tracks than attend a boring university. But here she is, so she decides to make a go of it by getting a job at the student radio station and joining the women's competitive a cappella group, the Bellas. But control-freak leader Aubrey (Camp) is annoyed to have the snarky Beca in her group, to say nothing of self-named Fat Amy (Wilson). Meanwhile, Beca's colleague at the radio station, Jesse (Astin), joins the champion male group the Troublemakers, led by the arrogant Bumper (DeVine). But as Beca and Jesse start to become friends, they risk running afoul of Aubrey's only rule: Bellas cannot date Troublemakers.

This rom-com plot isn't the focus of the film, nor is the impending a cappella championship, which we know from the start will be a showdown between the two groups. No, the focus is on the individual journeys of the characters, and even the smallest side characters are given space in which to grow on us. They're also brilliantly well-played by the entire cast, anchored by a solid, surprisingly layered turn from Kendrick. But the film's real scene-stealers are Banks and Higgins as competition commentators who reel off snappy jokes with such blinding speed that we can barely breathe whenever they're on screen.
