Jason and Julie are single thirty-something Manhattanites. They've been best friends since college but aren't remotely attracted to each other.
While at dinner with friends one night, Jason notices the behavior of some unruly children at the table next to them - and he and Julie talk about how inappropriate it is to bring kids to such a sophisticated place. Their friend Leslie suddenly announces that she's pregnant. Feeling mortified, Julie and Jason congratulate her, while promising that they'll be cool parents if they ever have kids.
Four years later, everything has changed. Jason and Julie are still single and childless. They visit Leslie's house for a party and find her harassed by her two kids, who run rings around her. The sudden mood swings unnerve Jason and Julie, who wonder if your whole demeanour really does change when you have children.
There's only one way to find out - have a kid of your own and Jason and Julie do just that. Can they beat the system? Can they raise their child without turning into stressed out versions of themselves? And can they stop themselves from falling in love with each other, despite dating two very suitable people?
