Battle Of The Sexes Review

Excellent

A dramatisation of the real-life clash between tennis icons Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs, this film is much more than a skilful re-enactment. It's a witty and insightful exploration of the kind of person who chases sporting success and global fame, even when the odds are stacked against them. And it's sharply well-played by Emma Stone and Steve Carell, who bring out the humour and pathos in their characters and the rivalry between them.

In the early 1970s, Billie Jean (Stone) has finally had enough of being treated as a second-class member of the tennis world, since women win just an eighth of what male players get. But the head of the tennis association (Bill Pullman) refuses to budge, so Billie Jean and her publicist (Sarah Silverman) start their own rival ladies' league. Meanwhile, former champion Bobby (Carell) is noisily shouting down this women's movement, claiming he could beat any female player. And while Billie Jean tries to ignore him, she knows that there's only one way to shut him up for good.

Screenwriter Simon Beaufoy (Slumdog Millionaire) packs a lot into two hours, digging beneath the story to explore both of these players in their private lives. Billie Jean is questioning her marriage to Larry (Austin Stowell) as she falls for her hairdresser (Andrea Riseborough). And Bobby's gambling obsession is jeopardising his marriage to Priscilla (Elisabeth Shue). The entire cast is terrific at bringing these people to life with scene-stealing quirks that keep the audience smiling. And both Stone and Carell skilfully reveal the resonant internal journeys King and Riggs are taking even as the situation becomes a full-on media circus.

Emma Stone Alan Cumming

Good news, musical theatre nerds! If you missed Emma Stone’s original run as Sally Bowles in Cabaret, her stay at the Roundabout Theater Company has been extended with two more weeks. Her final performance will be on February 19th.  Tickets for the final weeks of performances are now on sale at the Roundabout Theater’s website.

Emma Stone
Thanks to Emma Stone's success in Cabaret, The Roundabout Theater has extended her stay.

It’s no surprise that Stone is staying on in her role as the iconic Fraulein Sally Bowles, for which she’s received rave reviews since replacing Michelle Williams back in November. Stone’s name was originally attached to the production while it was in development, but she had to bow out due to scheduling conflicts. This is Stone’s Broadway debut, but we might be seeing more of her onstage this year, as well as her roles in upcoming projects by Woody Allen and Cameron Crowe.

George Lucas Evan Rachel Wood Kristin Chenoweth Alan Cumming

Set to captivate audiences of all ages, 'Strange Magic' is the enchanting animated comedy from George Lucas, who may have taken a step back from the big budget adventure blockbusters of 'Indiana Jones' and 'Star Wars', but certainly still has a few tricks up his sleeve.

With a hilarious cast featuring Evan Rachel Wood, Kristin Chenoweth and Alan Cumming, 'Strange Magic' sees a fairytale land divided into the magical and the mysterious, with the twain never meeting until one fateful day. Suddenly, there seems to be an impending all out war, with both cultures disturbed by the sight of each other and unwilling to accept each other's differences (doesn't sound like such a fantasy land after all, right?).

Back in June, Shia LaBeouf's bizarre behaviour made headlines once again when he was arrested for drunkenly interrupting a performance of Broadway's 'Cabarat,' where he began "acting up" by smoking cigarettes inside the building and grabbing the butts of several actors.

Transformers star Shia LaBeouf has pleaded guilty to charges of disorderly conduct filed earlier this year when he interrupted a theatre performance and then resisted removal from the venue. Under the terms of the plea he will avoid jail time or probation, but will have to attend all court appointments and complete a three month treatment programme.

According to the BBC, LaBeouf was arrested after "smoking, shouting at actors and using abusive language" whilst attempts were made to remove him from the theatre audience. The incident occurred during a performance of hit musical Cabaret in New York, starring Michelle Williams and Alan Cumming. However Scott Gorenstein, the rep for Liza Minnelli, made light of the siutation when he sent a DVD of the 1972 film adaptation of the musical to LaBeouf, telling Us Weekly "I figured he may want to find out how it ends."
