Few Britpop figures were as memorable as Blur’s Alex James. With his trademark bass guitar pose of one foot on the front-of-stage speaker and cigarette nonchalantly dangling out of his mouth, he’s always admitted to loving every second of fame.

Now, in a new interview with The Independent, James has suggested that there could be room for both his reformed band and a reunited Oasis in today’s music scene, even going so far as to say that the two former rivals could play together in the future. But only if Oasis supported them!

Speaking about the newfound respect between the two bands, the 46 year old said: “Liam's come out and said ‘Lonesome Street’ is his favourite song of the year, God bless him. And Damon and Noel are quite good friends now. So, I think, let's focus on the positives. It's lovely that it's got a happy ending. I hope they get back together. They can support us.”

Indeed, there was a rumour doing the round a month or so ago that Blur and Oasis would be co-headlining the closing Sunday night at Glastonbury this year. This was rather far-fetched wishful thinking, in fairness, a composite of separate rumours after Liam Gallagher had been photographed holding a backstage pass for one of Noel’s concerts, and Michael Eavis’s (completely false) suggestion that there would be two headliners on the Sunday night at Glasto. Which there are not - it's The Who instead.

Well, they’ll be in the same building together soon enough. Both Blur and Liam are among the guests announced for a one-off special reboot of the ‘90s favourite TV show ‘TFI Friday’ on June 12th. Will feathers fly?

Elsewhere in the interview, James spoke about where he thinks the future of his band lies, following the comeback success of The Magic Whip, their first album in 12 years, last month. “Well, I treat every show like it's the last,” he admitted. “It is genuinely edgy and precarious. You never know what Coxon is going to do next, or when I'm going to do something that upsets everybody!”

And, of course, nobody interviewing Alex James would be doing their job properly if they didn’t mention cheese. “Chefs are the new rock stars,” he said about his move into the arena of food. “If you want to be in a band, you have to be up really early and be nice to everyone. Chefs can tell people to shove it and get up when they like.”
