Alicia Keys Ends Partnership With Blackberry After Only One Year

Alicia Keys

Alicia Keys made a surprising move less than a year ago, by announcing a new partnership with Blackberry. But less than a year later, that love affair is over. The company has faced a tough 2013, and the broken partnership probably doesn't help.

Muscle Shoals - International Trailer

When Rick Hall opened up his record studio FAME Studios in the small town of Muscle Shoals, Alabama, it became something of a rock 'n' roll myth when some of the finest music ever written began to pour out of it. Hits from the likes of Aretha Franklin, Etta James, Percy Sledge, Wilson Pickett and Otis Redding became international, and Hall even managed blur the distinction between white and black a little as his all-white session group, The Swampers, became deeply respected among the funk and soul artists. After the session group separated themselves from Hall, some of them set up their own studio, the Muscle Shoals Sound Studio, and became the Muscle Shoals Sound Rhythm Section. From here, musicians began to shine their brightest as The Rolling Stones, Elton John, Willie Nelson, Paul Simon and Bob Dylan all left that town as legends as if enchanted by the beauty of Muscle Shoals.

Kings Of Leon Rock Global Citizen 2013 In The Name Of Ending Worldwide Poverty

Kings Of Leon Alicia Keys Stevie Wonder John Mayer

The Global Citizen festival is now in full swing after a roaring start last night (Saturday, September 28,) courtesy of Kings Of Leon. The band played to an enthusiastic crowd of some 60,000 people, with the gig being dedicated to ending world poverty. The band kicked off the charity concert with their latest single Supersoaker, a bright, uptempo guitar track perfect for the occasion.

Kings of Leon, V Festival
It was a solid festival set from the Kings, featuring a lot of fan favorites.

They soon dialed it back, however, with an earlier hit – The Bucket. Things got even more electrifying when the band had gotten warmed up and powered straight through Don’t Matter and a nice mix of old and new power anthems like Family Tree, Beautiful War and that classic Sex on Fire got turned into a crowd pleasing sing-along. KoL ended the set with another fan favorite – Use Somebody, before clearing the stage for John Mayer, followed by Alicia Keys and Stevie Wonder. It was a solid, if ever so slightly predictable set from the band, however many reviewers noted that the Kings sounded surer than they have in previous years.

Beyonce 50 Million Pepsi Deal And Other Massive Celebrity Endorsements

Beyonce Knowles Taylor Swift Justin Timberlake Alicia Keys Will.i.am Michelle Obama

Beyonce's £50 million Pepsi deal opened up a wider debate on celebrities, advertising and promotion last year, with Mrs Carter seemingly having no qualms selling sugary carbonated drinks despite helping Michelle Obama's Let's Move fitness campaign.

For years, Pepsi and Coca-Cola have been criticized for targeting children, with many arguing that when consumed to excess the drinks have negative effects on long-term health. However, in a recent interview with Flaunt, Beyonce rejected the idea of hypocrisy, saying, "Pepsi is a brand I've grown up seeing my heroes collaborate with. The company respects musicians and artistry. I wouldn't encourage any person, especially a child, to live life without balance."

The singer - the biggest R&B star in the world - has been heavily criticized for lending her name to the brand.

Are The Rolling Stones Boycotting Florida And Its 'Stand Your Ground' Law?

Rolling Stones Kanye West Madonna Alicia Keys Rihanna Rod Stewart Usher Will.i.am

The list of artists supposedly boycotting Florida because of the controversial Stand Your Ground law reads like a who’s who of modern music. Usher, Rod Stewart, Madonna, Kanye West, Rihanna, R. Kelly, Wale, Jay Z, and the Rolling Stones are all on it, but are the latter really in the boycott club?

A spokeswoman for the Rolling Stones, she said she was "not aware of this," according to Mother Jones, who contacted her, and actually broke the news to her. Representatives for the band in the UK added: "nobody's heard anything about this,” which suggests the band really aren’t involved in Stevie Wonder’s campaign against the Stand Your Ground Law, which is thought to have been a key factor in George Zimmerman’s acquittal in the Trayvon Martin case.

Jay Z & Justin Timberlake Take Chicago By Storm At Soldier Field

Jay Z Justin Timberlake Alicia Keys

R&B star Justin Timberlake and rapper Jay Z took their Magna Carta Holy Grail joint show to a sold out concert to the Chicago's Soldier Fields stop on their world tour. Their gig was certainly a spectacle of music, light and performance but The Chicago Tribute notes an intriguing moment during their joint headline concert when Timberlake apologised to the crowd after he launched into his own rendition of Sinatra's 'New York, New York' to a chorus of boos from the Chi-town crowd. "You know I love you, Chicago, right?" asked JT after he sensed unrest from within the audience. However, festooned with gold bling, rapper Jay Z strode up for an unapologetic performance of 'Empire State of Mind'; a serenade to his beloved home city, commanding the 50,000 fans to join in with the pre-recorded Alicia Keys performance.

Jay Z Weighed Down By Heavy Chains.

The Journal Sentinel remarks that the duo "fell short of delivering the No. 1 concert experience of the year," with "minimal banter" and interaction other than singing between the performers that "came off more as obligation than admiration." However, theirs was reportedly a highly slick collaboration that blended the distinct musical talents of the pair well, such as Jay Z's 'I Just Wanna Love U (Give It 2 Me)' weaving in and out with Timberlake's 'Rock Your Body' and, of course, the MCHG track 'Suit & Tie' in which JT sings whilst Jay Z raps.

Kings Of Leon have released 'Supersoaker,' the first single from their forthcoming album Mechanical Bull. The soulful effort features the band's signature anthemic guitar bursts and Caleb Followill's scowling vocals. All in all, it's pretty standard fare from the Nashville four-piece and it suggests more of the same for the band's sixth LP.

Alicia Keys - MEN Arena 24th May 2013 Live Review

As a 16-year-old, Alicia Keys was a soulful pianist telling us the intimate details of her diary. Since then she's won 14 Grammys, done a Bond theme song and sung at the Superbowl. As a 32-year-old she's one of the best and most successful R&B singers in the world and tonight is all about her.

Alicia Keys - Live Review

Tonight she flits through the stages of her career with ease and an air of sophistication. It's a long arena show of over 20 songs all of which are designed to exhibit her voice. From the percussion heavy theatrics of 'Girl On Fire' to the lullaby-like ballad 'Tears Always Win', classics like 'Fallin'' and of course modern hip-pop masterpiece 'Empire State Of Mind' show Keys' pipes and playing ability are always front and centre; whether it's just her and a piano or a stage full of breakdancing young men, the only thing you really notice is the sound. Keys is an artist with merit and integrity and she's keen to show that off.

Showcasing each and every aspect of her, including her bizarre turn as brand ambassador for BlackBerry, it's apparent how slick her show is. A Jay-Z screen performance, choreographed phone calls, a despicable swap of 'New York' for 'Manchester'; it's glossy to the point of glibness. Not even asking the audience to hold their phones in the air is left to chance. It makes for a finely tuned show, but a largely stale atmosphere. There's some sense that this is down to BlackBerry who make sure their presence is apparent as Lycra-clad women adorned with their logos swan round the place.

Alicia Keys Talks "Tears Always Win" And Nicki Minaj Collaboration

Alicia Keys Nicki Minaj

Fresh off the highly talked about Met ball earlier this week, Alicia Keys jetted off to Vegas to film the music video for her new single Tears Always Win. The track is the latest release of Girl on Fire and it tells the story of a woman, coping with a difficult breakup, which affects all other aspects of her life. Keys discussed the song and the video in depth with MTV, saying: "It's a girl and her working two jobs and she's got all these things going on. But the whole time, she's totally distracted because she's only thinking about how she feels [about her ex], almost at the point [where] you're thinking about the person, but you're also thinking about, kind of, your loneliness and how you feel. How're you gonna get through it? The video is totally beautiful, really unexpected. It has some Vegas pieces in it. I think the way it goes on, it really brings a relevance to the words and you'll really feel it. I'm loving it."

It doesn’t seem like a happy ending for the song’s protagonist, but at least, if Keys is right, we will get to enjoy some beautiful visuals. The Vegas setting should certainly offer plenty of those for the Tears Always Win video. But it will mainly focus on the character’s inner turmoil, said the singer/songwriter. "So, Tears Always Win is really about a relationship that's over and you're remembering all the times that it was there," she said. "You're remembering all the ways they filled your space and now that it's not there. You're telling yourself you don't need them, but you're missing them and you're crying about it."

55th Grammys Preview: 'Music's Biggest Night' Wont Fail To Impress

Grammy Awards Beyonce Knowles Prince Taylor Swift Maroon 5 Kelly Clarkson Florence and the Machine Frank Ocean Alicia Keys Elton John Ed Sheeran Bruno Mars Sting Jennifer Lopez Rihanna Justin Timberlake Justin Bieber Mumford And Sons Fun Black Keys Jack White

Annually, the Grammys is one of the biggest events for music across America and in Europe. In fact, it has dubbed itself 'music's biggest night'. Celebrating the best in pop, hiphop, soul, R&B and much of what comes in between, it never fails to be a veritable who's who from the Spotify playlists of the masses. And this year will be no different. Not only are the nominees ones to look out for, absences are worthy of note, as are this year's presenters and some very special performances.

As Yahoo report, this year's presenters include Grammy royalty, Prince, Beyonce, and Jennifer Lopez, all of whom have been nominated or won Grammys before.

In terms of performances to look forward to, this year we have some unusual and largely unexpected pair ups. Elton John and Ed Sheeran will take to the stage together. An unusual pairing, they're both Brits with unusual song writing talent. While John is a true showman and is well known for his intereSting outfits and outrageous glasses, Sheeran is distinctly more low key. We're not sure how this is going to work, but we're guessing it'll be great. Bruno Mars, Sting and Rihanna will all also perform together, as will Alicia Keys and Maroon 5, and Dierks Bentley and Miranda Lambert.

Out Now - US Albums Releases: 12-12-12 Concert Compilation Features Who's Who Of Rock, Aaron Neville Makes Blue Note Debut,

Bruce Springsteen Rolling Stones The Who Alicia Keys Aaron Neville Keith Richards GARY ALLAN Bad Religion

It’s a real mixed bag for the biggest album releases today and the most popular is bound to be the accompanying CD release to the 12-12-12Benefit Concert for victims of Hurricane Sandy. The tracklisting reads like a who’s who of the biggest names in rock and pop, with Bruce Springsteen and the E Street band contributing ‘Land of Hope And Dreams’ and ‘Wrecking Ball,’ whilst The Rolling Stones liven things up with ‘You Got Me Rocking’ and ‘Jumpin’ Jack Flash.’

And of course, a who’s who isn’t a who’s who without The Who, who also make an appearance, with ‘Who Are You,’ ‘Baba O’Riley’ and ‘Love Reign O’er Me.’ It’s very much a line-up full of (ahem) ‘experienced’ male musicians. The presence of Alicia Keys doesn’t exactly balance things out, as she sits there alone, with one track breaking up the compilation and ‘Empire State of Mind’ closing things out. The latter track, though, an affection paean to one of the cities destroyed by the hurricane, is an obvious highlight of this emotionally-weighted compilation.

The National Anthem At This Year's Superbowl Will Be Sung By Alicia Keys

Alicia Keys Beyonce Knowles Destiny's Child Christina Aguilera Kelly Rowland Michelle Williams

Well, it was about time. With a week left until the Super Bowl, the National Football League finally announced that this year, the national anthem at the game will be sung by none other than Alicia Keys.

The fourteen-time Grammy winner seems like a perfectly solid choice for the honorary job, although, with previous Super Bowl performances in mind, she probably doesn’t have that much to compete with (cough, Christina Aguilera’s botched performance in 2011).

Despite the Super Bowl being hosted in New Orleans this year, the entertainment will be dominated by New York ladies as it seems, with NY-native Keys singing the anthem and residents of the Big Apple Beyonce, along with fellow Destiny’s Child singers Kelly Rowland and Michele Williams (it is rumoured), performing in the half time show. So far, this is all the news anyone has about the entertainment at this year’s game, but even so, it looks like everyone, including non-football fans, will be catered for. If you don’t tune in for the game, it may be worth at least checking out the entertainment. And those shiny, shiny Super bowl ads. Despite rumoured changes to the tone of the advertising, we’re sure there will be no shortage of scantily clad women in the ad breaks, as per Super Bowl tradition. And with so much money being poured into the entertainment and advertising, surely, this will be one to watch. After all, the Super Bowl only comes along once a year.

You can always rely on Cedric The Entertainer to get the red-carpet rocking ahead of an industry bash. Real name Cedric Antonio Kyles, the American actor and comedian showed up at the 2013 BET Honors last week to really liven things up! The Steve Harvey Show alum looked in his element posing for photographers and chatting with fellow guests.

It was a typical grand entrance from the funny-man, though the waiting press pack were perhaps more keen to snap Avatar star Laz Alonso, who also attended the event, and Anthony Anderson from All About The Andersons. Other high profile arrivals included R&B and soul producers Jimmy Jam and Terry lewis, BET chairman Debra Lee and Ava Coleman, Whose Line Is It Anyway? comedian Wayne Brady and WNBA player Lisa Leslie and husband MICHAEL LOCKWOOD.

BRIT Awards 2013 Nominees Announced: Diverse? Or Just Weird?

Amy Winehouse Emeli Sande Bat For Lashes Paloma Faith Jessie Ware The XX Alt-J Mumford And Sons Muse One Direction Tom Odell AlunaGeorge Michael Buble Laura Mvula Rihanna Cat Power Alicia Keys Lana Del Rey Adele Brit Awards

This year’s Brit Awards nominations look as though they were concocted by a group of strangers, with wildly different cultural backgrounds, on a drunken night out. Is this a sign that the mainstream music world is finally starting to accept that it’s becoming more and more acceptable to have diverse musical tastes? Or are the organisers of the BRITS simply trying to spark controversy? have they lost the plot? Or is this an honest reflection of the mindset of a 2013 British music buying public? Let’s take a look at the evidence, and scrutinise some of the more baffling categories…

British Female Solo Artist Nominees – One of the more sensitive and contentious issues, here, in the British female solo artist category. Of the five nominees, only four of them were alive this year. We understand that Amy Winehouse has a lasting legacy in British pop music. We understand that she was – and, in many ways remains - a tour de force. But, for the sake of the awards, we simply have to ask, at the risk of sounding flippant, what has Amy Winehouse done for British music in the last 12 months? Sadly, nothing. Her posthumous album (released in December 2011, we should add), Lioness: Hidden Treasures was politely and quietly denounced for being little more than cuttings from the studio floor. We simply can’t get our heads around her inclusion on this list. With Bat For Lashes throw in as the ‘alternative’ wild card, to lend a touch of outsider cool to the category, it’s between Emeli Sande, Paloma Faith and Jessie Ware to catch this one, we reckon.
