Radcliffe Gay Love Scene Discussed: Daniel Radcliffe ‘Dove Right Into’ Same Sex Love Scene

Daniel Radcliffe Allen Ginsberg

The former Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe takes on a very different role from the young wizard, in his latest movie Kill Your Darlings. In the movie, which is making a showing at the Sundance Festival in Utah, Radcliffe plays the role of the famous beat poet Allen Ginsberg and had to tackle his first gay love scenes, in a story which sees Ginsberg’s idol Lucien Carr murder David Kammerer.

Through the course of the movie Radcliffe’s character comes to embrace his own homosexuality. The movie’s director, John Krokidas revealed that he gave Radcliffe a few pointers, when it came to making the love scenes convincing and believable. Talking at the Sundance Festival, Krokidas told Associated Press “Radcliffe simply asked, 'John, you're gay. How does this work?'" Krokidas said. "I'm not kidding. And so perhaps there was a little dry run-through — oh, she's going to kill me — with me and the director of photography Reed Morano.”

Radcliffe is keen that his Harry Potter fame should feed into Kill Your Darlings and thinks it’s great that people who may not otherwise have watched such a movie, will be drawn to it by his celebrity. “I don't care why people come and see films,” said Radcliffe. “If they come and see a film about the beat poets because they saw me in Harry Potter, fantastic. That's a wonderful thing. I feel like I have an opportunity to capitalize on 'Potter' by doing work that might not otherwise get attention. If I can help get a film like this attention, that's without doubt, that's a great thing."

Magic Trip Review

Very Good
At the height of his success as a novelist, Ken Kesey picked up a film camera and set out to make a road movie. But the 30 hours of footage and unsynchronised sound were never edited down until now. And this invaluable documentary, subtitled "Ken Kesey's Search for a Kool Place", compiles takes us along for the ride.

Inspired by Jack Kerouac's On the Road, Kesey and the Merry Pranksters decided to drive a colourfully painted schoolbus, christened Further, from California to the New York 1964 World's Fair to get a feel for what was happening in America. They made it there after two weeks of free-wheeling craziness with amusing small adventures every step of the way. But they also get so lost in dropping acid that everything starts getting rather chaotic, sending their relationships into soap-opera territory. Which makes the drive back home a bit surreal.

Back in 1964, Author of classic novel 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest', Ken Kesey, set off on a famous road trip across the USA to the New York World's Fair. He was accompanied by what came to be known as 'The Merry Band of Pranksters', a rebellious group of truth-seekers, one of which was Neal Cassady, an icon celebrated in Kerouac's 'On the Road', and the man in charge of decorating and driving their transport - the Magic Bus.

Before Stonewall: The Making Of A Gay And Lesbian Community Review

Excellent
Re-released to tie in with its 25th anniversary, the most striking thing about this film is how revelatory it is, tracing the history of gay activism. Not only are these stories we never hear about, but America has clearly taken a giant step backwards on this human rights issue.

Most people believe that the gay movement began with the 1969 Stonewall riots, when New Yorkers finally fought back against the violence and discrimination of the local police. But this film goes much further back to document the changing attitudes toward homosexuality over the previous century, from the free acceptance of the 20s to the violent reactions of the 50s and 60s that sparked the Civil Rights movement and then the events at Stonewall.
