Season 13 will kick off with former judge Jennifer Lopez coming back, after taking a season off. She will join Keith Urban, and brand new judge Harry Connick, Jr.

Season 12 could be best described as a big mess. Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj stole the spotlight, but not in a good way. The two divas were continuously fighting, and it took attention away from the singers on the show. American Idol lost 10 million viewers from the year before, according to USA Today, many who transitioned over the watching The Voice.

The lost season is obviously apparent to all the new judges.

"I think the focus is back where it's supposed to be on everything: All the positivity that is American Idol, all the dream that is American Idol and all the emotion that is American Idol," Lopez told USA Today.

"It's different in every way. There's a whole different creative team around the show," Urban added. "We learned so much from last year about what this show is really about at its core and why it's been the flagship show of its kind. It's about the artists."

This will be the first season Randy Jackson is not a judge, but he remains with the show as a mentor.

"I said I do not want to see people who legitimately don't belong," Connick said. "That said, my 16-year-old said, 'Dad, is there going to be silly people coming to audition, people that we get to laugh at?' Because they like that as part of the show."

Season 13 of American Idol will air Wednesday night (January 15).
