The stars of Bollywood were in top form at the opening night of the Cannes Film Festival
The stars of Bollywood were the surprise sensations at the opening day of the Cannes Film Festival, with stars like Amitabh Bachchan and Vidya Balan taking up most of the spotlight at the glamourous event.
The 66th Annual Cannes Film Festival opened up with Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby adaptation, with a handful of India's most famous actors and actresses - Amitabh Bachchan, Vidya Balan, Sonam Kapoor, Freida Pinto - stealing the limelight away from stars such as Leonardo DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan. The stars mixed Indian and Western fashions, with Balan, who is the jury panel for the festival, wowing in a white and black Sabyasachi lehenga, complete with a net dupatta worn over her head. Meanwhile Slumdog Millionaire actress Freida Pinto went for a more Cannes-familiar pink Gucci gown.
Sonam Kapoor was one of the main attractions last night
Balan sits on the judging panel with a host of international film stars, including head judge Steven Spielberg, Christoph Waltz, Daniel Auteuil, Cristian Mungiu, Ang Lee, Nicole Kidman, Lynne Ramsay and Naomi Kawase. Bachchan meanwhile is one of the co-stars of the film festival opener The Great Gatsby, while Kapoor and Pinto were invited along to inject some Eastern glamour to the occasion.
Also stealing away most of the spotlight from some of Hollywood's biggest stars was model Cara Delevingne, who looked absolutely stunning in her black, part-lace floor-length gown. With the proceedings for day two fast approaching, we can't wait to see how everyone will be trying to top the opening night.
