First Weekend Of 2015 Sees The Hobbit Still Dominating The Box Office

Peter Jackson Meryl Streep Angelina Jolie

This week’s box office confirmes what we’ve already suspected for a while: people love to watch fantasy over the holidays. The first weekend box office of the year was dominated by The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies with $21.9 million. This raised its total haul in the U.S. and Canada to $220.8 million, according to The LA Times. The fourth and final instalment in the Peter Jackson-directed franchise is also the most critically acclaimed one (61% on Rotten Tomatoes), so if you’re still not sure what to go see next weekend, Five Armies is definitely a solid choice.

The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies Still
Battle of the Five Armies might be the best Hobbit film to date.

Then there’s Into the Woods, which is kind of a winter classic – you have fairy tales, singing and Meryl Streep, it’s no wonder the film pulled in $19,1 million over the weekend. The Rob Marshall adaptation of the classic Sondheim musical came in second at the box office, followed closely by Unbroken with $18,4 million, as per The LA Times' report.

Unbroken Review

Excellent

With a true story that's almost hard to believe, this inspiring biographical drama is made with attention to detail and a remarkable resistance to sentiment. And strong acting helps bring the characters to life, even if everything feels a little too carefully staged. But it's the real-life aspect that grabs the attention, and a central figure who's a remarkable example of the indomitable human spirit. The film also marks an auspicious step forward for Angelina Jolie as a director, telling a big story without giving in to the usual sappy moviemaking pitfalls.

Son of Italian immigrants, Louie Zamperini (Jack O'Connell) grew up in 1920s Southern California and by the time he hit his teens is on the way to becoming a criminal. But his brother Pete (Alex Russell) helps him channel his energy to running instead, and his natural skill make him a local champion as well as an American record-holder at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. When the war breaks out, he enlists and serves as a bombardier in the Pacific, surviving a plane crash before later going down at sea and drifting with two colleagues (Domhnall Gleeson and Finn Wittrock) for 47 days before being captured by the Japanese. From here he endures a horrific stint in a prisoner of war camp, taunted by the cruel commandant everyone calls The Bird (Miyavi), who takes particular notice of Louie simply because he refuses to break.

Jolie assembles the film as a big-budget epic, with massive set pieces as the plot cycles through several outrageous episodes before settling in on the prison years. Cinematographer Roger Deakins carefully contrasts Louie's sunny California youth with the much starker visit to Nazi Germany and the astoundingly bleak Japanese prison camp, with those endless days baking at sea in the middle. So the film looks terrific, drawing us into each chapter in Louie's story while building a sense of momentum. It's not quite as complex as it looks; Louie's darker moments feel a bit superficial. But O'Connell adds some weight to each scene, offering a kick of emotion as well as the charisma that convinces the men around him to draw inspiration from his tenacity.

Should Angelina Jolie's 'Unbroken' Still Be Considered An Oscar Contender?

Angelina Jolie Jack O'Connell

For the majority of 2014 - and some time before it - Angelina Jolie's latest directorial effort Unbroken has been talked up as a potential Oscar winner. Lord knows the Academy has a penchant for historical biopics and the story of Louis Zamperini is certainly one of the most inspiring stories to rise from the horrors of World War II.

Jack O'ConnellJack O'Connell [L] stars as Louis Zamperini in Angelina Jolie's Unbroken

Zamperini was a teenage track star at the Berlin Olympics in 1936 but was tested beyond belief as a prisoner of the Japanese during the Second World War. Presumed dead after crash landing in the South Pacific, Zamperini survived by clutching onto a raft for 47 days before being incarcerated in prison camps and beaten daily for nearly 3 years, all whilst kept on a near-starvation diet.

Angelina Jolie: I Never Planned On Directing

Angelina Jolie never thought directing was on the cards

Having won countless awards including an Academy Award in her prolific acting career, Angelina Jolie is without doubt one of the brightest stars Hollywood has to offer. She is just as well known for her extensive humanitarian projects, namely regarding sexual violence in military conflict zones and has done more than her fair share of charity trips and million dollar donations. It was perhaps this that took her to her 2011 feature filmmaking debut 'In the Land of Blood and Honey' which dealt with an issue close to her work: the Bosnian conflicts.

Gosling and Mendes got together in 2011, so he's technically been off the market for some time now.

Brad Pitt or Angelina Jolie. When asked to choose between this power couple, most people would be fine with either. Jolie is intelligent, charitable, worldly and stunning. Brad Pitt, even after his hey-day is… how do we put this delicately… hot, not to mention a creative and business-savvy force to be reckoned with. Fortunately for them, they seem to have found a good thing – lasting marriage, a whole litter of children and thriving careers to boot. Unfortunately for us, this means that both are off the market for good. The same largely applies to Beyonce and Jay Z, by the way.

Adoring Fans Raise "The Fault In Our Stars" To Box Office Success, While "Edge Of Tomorrow" Falters

Shailene Woodley Ansel Elgort Tom Cruise Emily Blunt Angelina Jolie

The Fault In Our Stars seems to be emerging as the winner of this weekend’s box office race, after it made teens across the US (and the world) bawl their eyes out for three solid days. That’s what the tweets say, anyway. The film tells the story of a pair of teens living with cancer – the clever and self-deprecating Hazel Grace Lancaster (Shailene Woodley) and the disarmingly lovable Augustus Waters (Ansel Elgort). As the two meet, fall in love and go on a life-changing trip together, they discover some truths about life, love and the meaning of it all.. As for the box office stats, well, those are nothing to cry about.

The Fault In Our Stars Cast
The cast of TFIOS at the film's New York premiere.

TFIOS, adapted from John Green’s bestselling novel (read all his books, if you haven’t already, seriously) is doing amazingly well not just in the US, but also in international markets. The film, which reportedly cost just $17 million to make, checked in at $26.1 million in domestic profits on Friday, and is projected to pass the $50 million mark by the end of Sunday, per Box Office Mojo. In international markets, TFIOS is expected to do even better, although the data is still unavailable at this time.

Angelina Jolie

We’ve been trying not to listen to them, but there have been plenty of reports circulating that Angelina Jolie intends to quit acting. Even more worrying to hear, it’s being reported that she has plans to act in just one more project before throwing in the towel. Riding high off the success of Maleficent you’d think Jolie would be buzzing off the fact that she’s reached the zenith of her career rather than thinking about calling it quits.

Angelina Jolie Cleopatra Jolie has been dropping hints about the future of her career in an interview with BBC radio

Official: 'Maleficent' Takes $69.4 Million - But Can It Beat 'Edge Of Tomorrow'?

Angelina Jolie Tom Cruise

Angelina Jolie’s Disney blockbuster ‘Maleficent’ has taken $69.4 million at the final U.S box office count for the weekend. That means it’s now pretty much recouped its $180 million budget in worldwide takings and is well on its way to making a bucket load of cash. The competition turned out to be weak, with Seth MacFarlane’s ‘A Million Ways to Die in the West’ flat lining with $17 million.

The comedy was almost beaten by Fox’s X:Men: Days of Future Past, which itself dropped 64% in its second week. Elsewhere, the critically derided Blended and Neighbors (now in its fourth week) were neck and neck for the fifth spot with Seth Rogen’s comedy losing out.

Angelina Jolie To Retire After Cleopatra? Actress Hints At Focus Shift

Angelina Jolie Brad Pitt

Angelina Jolie has hinted that a retirement from acting could be on the horizon after she finishes her upcoming Cleopatra biopic. The Maleficent actress, who is currently promoting her dark fairytale retake, has already indicated that she'd like to step away from movies to concentrate on her humanitarian concerns.

"I've had a wonderful career and I'm very happy to have had all the opportunities to tell stories and work for as long as I have," she said last month at a Maleficent press conference. "I'm sure there will be more films but I am happy I am able to be selective and have fun with characters like this but I would like to focus on writing and directing and above all I would like to focus more on my work with the UN."

Film Critics Told What's What: 'Maleficent' Wows Moviegoers

Angelina Jolie Elle Fanning

There’s been a bit of a dichotomy in opinion when it comes to Disney’s Maleficent. Angelina Jolie’s eagerly anticipated film was released last week, and despite taking $70 million on its opening weekend, has received mixed reviews from critics. Jolie, who plays the titular character, has been highly praised for her performance, although it’s often noted that her acting is the redeeming feature of the live-action film.

angelina jolie maleficent Angelina Jolie has been widely praised for her performance as Maleficent

Vulture’s Bilge Ebiri sums up: “Jolie’s commitment to the part is admirable: She gives this Maleficent a real emotional urgency. But the rest of the movie lets her down.” Perhaps the most scathing review comes from Jonathan Romney at The Guardian, who gives the film just one star.  Romney describes Maleficent as an “icky affair,” dubbing the movie a “messy live-action retelling of Sleeping Beauty” and criticising Jolie, who he claims is “equipped with a range of variable English accents.”

Maleficent Review

Good

Disney rewrites its own history again with this revisionist version of its 1959 classic Sleeping Beauty. As she did with Alice in Wonderland, screenwriter Linda Woolverton uses simplistic plotting and clumsy dialogue to turn a children's story into an eerily dark Lord of the Rings-style effects extravaganza. Fortunately, it's held together by an imperious performance from Angelina Jolie.

She plays the story's wicked witch as a misunderstood hero, a happy fairy who grew up in a magical realm next to a kingdom of humans who were constantly afraid of what they didn't understand. And things take a grim turn when her childhood friend Stefan (Sharlto Copley) brutally violates her in order to become the human's king. Now the two lands are at war with each other, and in a fit of rage Maleficent curses Stefan's firstborn Aurora (Dakota Fanning) to fall into a deep sleep before she turns 16. So Stefan hides her in a country house cared for by three bumbling pixies (Imelda Staunton, Lesley Manville and Juno Temple). But it's actually Maleficent who watches over Aurora, and as they bond Maleficent begins to wish she could undo that pesky curse.

Yes, this is not remotely the familiar 17th century Sleeping Beauty fairytale: it's a completely different plot that reduces the "sleeping" bit from 100 years to little more than a power nap. It also re-casts Maleficent as a woman who had one brief moment of nastiness, while the increasingly paranoid and cruel Stefan is the real villain of the piece. The problem is that this shift leaves all of the characters feeling shallow and uninteresting. Aside from Jolie's fabulously prowling horned fairy, no one on-screen really registers at all. The terrific trio of pixies are sidelined in silly slapstick, while the Handsome Prince (Brendon Thwaites) is utterly hapless and Maleficent's crow-like sidekick (Sam Riley) is the victim of an over-zealous make-up designer.

How Does 'Maleficent' Rate Amongst Angelina Jolie's Most Memorable Roles?

Angelina Jolie

Angelina Jolie's most recent role in Disney's 'Maleficent', the new adaptation of Walt Disney's 1959 animation 'Sleeping Beauty', is as compelling as it is frightening as she plays the domineering cold-hearted Queen.

Maleficent
Jolie as The Queen in 'Maleficent'

The fantasy depicts a prequel and "untold story" of one of Disney's most villainous characters ever, the 38 year-old actress brilliantly portrays how the Queen became wicked and the events that led her to cursing young Princess Aurora (played by Elle Fanning).

President Jolie? Would Angelina Jolie Make A Good Politician?

Angelina Jolie

No one can deny that Angelina Jolie is one very hard working woman. She’s a film star, mother to a massive brood and a humanitarian regularly involved with the UN. To the casual observer, Jolie doesn’t have much time for anything else in her life, you know, other than perhaps being the president. We’re pretty sure she could fit that into her schedule.

Angelina Jolie President We'd like to live in a world where Angelina Jolie was president

Good Morning America host George Stephanopoulos has been chatting to the Maleficent star about the possibility that she could run for office. He first asked her the question nine years ago, back in 2005. At the time Jolie had denied any intention to run for office. Why? “I have way too many skeletons,” she told the host. We’re just wondering here, where these skeletons real or metaphorical? Jolie was a bit of a goth once upon a time, she may actually be referring to some skeletons she owned whose maintenance kept her far too busy to run for office.

Angelina Jolie Says Big-Screen Reunion With Brad Pitt Will Be "Raw" And "Experimental"

Angelina Jolie

If Angelina Jolie is definitely going to star alongside her fiancé Brad Pitt on the big-screen, their fans should expect to see something very different.

The last time the Hollywood power couple starred opposite one another was in 'Mr and Mrs Smith' nine years ago, which is when they fell in love.

News of the pair joining the same production surfaced earlier this month, but Jolie has only just confirmed this, describing it as a very "experimental, independent" flick, while speaking with Extra to promote her latest movie, 'Maleficent.'

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt might seem like the perfect couple now (or as close to perfect as any human couple can be anyway), but it wasn’t always so. Are Angelina Jolie And Brad Pitt Pulling A Beyonce/Jay Z Stunt With New Secret Project Together?

Angelina Jolie Brad Pitt

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie news are usually a Hollywood highlight, but when the pair are about to film a new movie together, it takes the buzz to a whole new level. The power couple have not collaborated on a film project since 2005’s Mr. and Mrs. Smith.

Angelina Jolie
After a few rough months, Jolie is diving back into work.

The Hollywood Reporter first announced the news, but at this point, there is little else to report. According to The Hollywood Reporter, which first reported the news, the project could be filmed from a script for a relationship drama, which Angelina Jolie wrote a few years ago. That project centered on a couple with issues who take a vacation in a last-ditch effort to save their marriage. There is no director attached to the project at this time and there is a possibility that Jolie might direct it herself. Jolie is in post right now Unbroken, the true World War II tale of Lou Zamperini that she directed for Universal. It is also not known who is producing. So far, that’s all the information to report on the upcoming project, but watch this space for future updates.
