It’s been a tough few months for Angelina Jolie following the high-profile split of her and actor Brad Pitt and the star has largely stayed out of the spotlight since Septembrr. However, to promote her new film, First They Killed My Father, the actress made her first public appearance since the break-up in Cambodia - where the flick is set.

The director and mother-of-six spearheaded the movie which focuses on the Cambodian war-time experiences of Loung Un as a young child grappling with the brutal Khmer Rogue dictatorship.

The film is due to be released on Netflix and Jolie, who appeared in Siem Reap, Cambodia for its first public screening, told how her eldest son 15-year-old Maddox, who is Cambodian, encouraged her to look at the subject matter.

The UN Goodwill ambassador said: "I wanted to focus not just on the war but on the love of family and on the beauty of the country and in fact I wanted to understand what my son's birth parents may have gone through.

"And I wanted to know him better and I wanted to know this country better."

She added: "He was the one who just called it and said he was ready and that he wanted to work on it, which he did. He read the script, helped with notes and was in the production meetings."

The film is coming soon to Netflix.
