Singing, dancing vampires. It might sound like the entertainment industry is collapsing in on itself, but the concept is on its way to become a reality with a musical based on HBO’s True Blood. HBO is in “very early discussions” for the project, according to Variety. Even so, Nathan Barr, the composer behind True Blood’s score, already has a couple of songs ready for the musical. He plans to present the project to the network next year.

Anna Paquin, Stephen Moyer
No news yet on whether Anna Paquin, Stephen Moyer or any of the True Blood stars will appear in the musical.

“The story lends itself to a musical,” Barr told E! Online. “The challenge for us is the minute I thought about ‘True Blood: The Musical,’ I myself could kind of groan. I can see the bad version of that. It’s really a matter of finding a way of sort of reinventing it.”

Like the show and The Southern Vampire Mysteries seriesby Charlaine Harris, which inspired it, the musical will be centered around the character of Sookie Stackhouse (played by Anna Paquin on the HBO show). Barr didn’t mention whether the original cast will star in the project, but did say that Stephen Moyer (Bill Compton on the drama) helped him put together samples for the pitch.

Stephen Moyer
Stephen Moyer worked with Barr on the adaptation.

“We’re pitching it; it’s not a guaranteed thing,” Barr said. “I have the rights. HBO doesn’t have to like it, but hopefully they will, and they’ll give us the shot to make it and bring it to Broadway.”

The news comes just in time to ease the transition for True Blood fans after the series airs its final episode this Sunday.
