Earlier this week we were treated to the first teaser trailer for Christopher Nolan's sci-fi epic Interstellar. The trailer really did put the 'teaser' back in to teaser trailer, as it consisted only of archive footage of various historical events, with Matthew Mcconaughey's rich Texan drawl narrating something inspirational over the top of the images. It gave absolutely nothing away in regards to what we can expect to see in the film, but frankly we don't even care.

Not to jump to conclusions, but Nolan might have done it again

Nolan has been working in relative secrecy on the project along with his brother, Jonathan Nolan, with the basis of the film apparently being inspired by a story by physicist Kip S. Thorne. We already know this, as well as the fact that McConaughey will be starring in the film alongside Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Casey Affleck, Michael Caine and others, and after seeing the first glimpse of the film this is still all we know in regards to what the Nolan Bros. have in store for us. Their secrecy might make some angry, but frankly the secrecy is just making us more and more excited for the complex film.

Sundance 2014 promises to be as varied as ever, with a healthy mix of world cinema, documentary film and Hollywood output. Celebrating its 30th anniversary, the festival will run from January 16-26 and, by the time it closes its doors, will have showcased 117 feature-length projects, 16 of which are world premieres.

"This year's lineup is reflective of film-makers wanting to tell new stories, and we're seeing a broader range of characters and ages," Trevor Groth, the director of programming, told the Hollywood Reporter. "A lot of times, the typical Sundance film-maker has a younger perspective and tells stories of what they know. But this year we're seeing more stories about people who are older."

Jake Gyllenhaal becomes the latest actor to take his new role to the extreme by losing a significant twenty pounds for crime drama 'Nightcrawler'.

The 'Brokeback Mountain' star looked alarmingly different as he appeared on the red carpet at the 17th Annual Hollywood Film Awards on Monday (October 21st 2013), his usual padded cheeks now sunken and definitely looking a far cry from the bulky frame he adopted for 2010 adventure flick 'Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time'. In his new film 'Nightcrawler', due for release in 2014, he plays Lou; a freelance crime journalist who finds himself amidst the treacherous world of corruption hidden by the glitzy front of LA.

Ben Affleck has finally responded to the backlash and online petition against him being the next Batman in the 2015 Zack Snyder face-off with Henry Cavill's Superman. As the petition's signatures crept past 90,000, the actor could not pretend he was unaware of the furore any longer. It was time for the Oscar-winning director to address the online tirades and bad feeling towards him.

It was first held in 1999 and has gradually grown increasing popular with the passing years. This year, according to the Teen Choice Award Website, over 150 million teenagers voted on the various categories.

Beyonce is the latest star to try out the ever-popular 'pixie' look, as the singer has chopped off her once flowing locks in favour of a much easier to handle look. The star uploaded a trio of images showing off her new look to her Instagram page yesterday (8 August) and since then it has been awash with comments from fans and onlookers, with some praising the new look as a revelation, whilst other think it is a major fashion misstep.

Usually when a star chops off their locks, it is done in a bid to reinvent themselves and cast off a previous image - ala Rihanna and Emma Watson - so is this new look a nod in the direction of her alter ego Sasha Fierce, or is this a new persona emerging from Bey? Maybe it has nothing to do with a statement at all, and after her near miss with an electric fan during a recent Toronto show, perhaps Bey just fancied something different when se last visited her hairdresser.

JANE AUSTEN's ring was bought by Kelly Clarkson last year but it's still in the country! The turquoise and gold ring, once owned by Jane Austen, was bought by Clarkson last year at auction. She reported paid £152 450 for the item but has been fighting the British government to take it out of the country.

Culture minster Ed Vaizey is ensuring the ring remains on British soil by placing a temporary export bar on it. He has appealed for British buyers to come forward to offer to purchase the ring from the singer. They have until 30th September to match the price paid by Clarkson. If a buyer does not come forward before this time, the export bar will be lifted.

In an accolade of meat avoidance, Kristen Bell and fiancé Dax Shepard have been crowned animal rights activist PETA's sexiest celebrity vegetarians, in a campaign to spread the word about the benefits of cutting out meat. 32 year-old Bell, who's best known for her titular role in the Veronica Mars television series, revealed that she's been veggie since she was a teen: "I had a hard time disassociating the animals I cuddled with-dogs and cats, for example-from the animals on my plate, and I never really cared for the taste of meat." This isn't the first time she's been recognised by PETA for her dietary choices - in 2006 she was selected as their 'World's Sexiest Vegetarian' and now it seems she's lifting the crown again with her fiancé and father of her child, Dax Shepard.

Shepard spoke of the benefits of a vegan diet, after being encouraged to follow Bell's example by documentary Forks Over Knives, which advocates a plant-based diet: "I have fewer body aches, my skin looks better, I'm never starving, and I never need to ride the couch feeling completely full and disgusting" he explained to Playboy magazine when he was following a strict no-meat diet. However, it seems that it's only Bell who can truly feel proud of the title:"I'm really flattered to be named 'Sexiest Vegetarian' with ?@IMKristenBell, but sadly I can't accept in good conscience because I eat chicken," Shepard tweeted. In a shock for PETA, who had been using the publicity as part of their campaign to encourage more people to be vegetarian, Dax added: "I was vegan for a year, but that ended 6 months ago. I aspire to be more like ?@IMKristenBell, but I'm not there yet," he said in a follow-up tweet. Oops.

All Your Favorite Characters Are Back In 'Rio 2'

The sequel to 2011's 'Rio' is getting closer, with the return of Ice Age director Carlos Saldanha and a new trailer looks like the new movie has just as much feathery fun to offer as the original. It once again follows Blue and Jewel, the two macaws living a pretty idyllic lifestyle with their caring owners Linds and Tulio, who seek to keep them safe from smugglers.

The pair frequently throw bird parties for their pals, Pedro, Nico, Toco the Toucon and Luiz, but when the free spirited Jewel wishes to venture into the wilderness of the Amazon rainforest to raise the couple's children amongst normal birds, their steady lives begin to unravel. Blu is used to being domesticated and he struggles to adapt to his new surroundings  - something not helped by the return of the evil Sulphur-crested Cockatoo Nigel whose sole aim in life is to make Blu's life anything but easy.

Anne Hathaway showed off her latest look at last night's (May 6) Mets Ball in New York, unveiling her new platinum blonde locks for the first time at the alternative gathering. Speaking to Variety on the red carpet, the Oscar-winner said that she was inspired by Blondie rocker Debbie Harry, who was at the gala, for her new look.

Speaking to Variety, she described her new look as "the most punk" thing she's ever done, more than living up to the night's theme of Punk: Chaos to Couture. The Dark Knight Rises star completed the look with a black Valentino gown and added about her costume, "I don't know that you could tell it by looking at me, but Debbie Harry was (my inspiration)."

The Daily Mail has taken down its story regarding Anne Hathaway joining the Broadway show cabaret and now., E! News reports that the rumors are most likely false. Anne’s rep contacted E! to say “it’s not true,” which is a shame, really because after she showed off what a lovley set of pipes she has on her, in Les Miserables, we can’t think of anything better than watching Hathaway getting her Sally Bowles on and doing a turn in Cabaret.

Although the original report has ben taken offline, E! News say that it claimed Anne Hathaway would star in the musical, alongside Alan Cumming, who won a Tony award for his role in the musical back in 1989. However, it looks as though the Anne Hathaway / Liza Minnelli comparisons are going to have to end at the pixie cut because her rep seems keen to put an end to this particular rumor.

A Guardian report suggests that the Daily Mail at least got the Alan Cumming element of the story right; he will be reprising the role of the Emcee, having alluded to it briefly in a recent interview: I’m doing another show on Broadway after The Good Wife season ends. It starts rehearsals the day after my 49th birthday, so I'll be entering my 50th year dancing my tits off and being a sexpot.” Although he didn’t mention the production by name, he did confirm “It's something I did before and we're doing it again.”

Anne Hathaway’s decision to ditch her usual awards-favourite designer Valentino for a Prada dress may not seem like a big deal to the average movie fan, but in Hollywood, these things are kind of a big deal. So when we learned that Hathaway had switched dresses at the last minute because a fellow actress was planning to wear a gown that was too similar to the one picked out for her by Valentino, we were dying to know who it was that caused the about-turn on Anne’s sartorial choices.

According to a story from Us magazine, it was actually none other than Hathaway’s Les Miserables co-star Amanda Seyfried that caused all the bother. And it seems as though it was the decreasingly-popular Hathaway that kicked up a fuss over the matter and decided that she simply had to change dresses. Seyfried reportedly showed Anne a snap of her Alexander McQueen gown during Oscar rehearsals and Anne got herself all worked up over the similarity of the two dresses. Apparently, Amanda didn't want to deal with it and left” the rehearsals, according to their source, whilst Hathaway forced her hair and make-up teams to spend hours with her whilst she decided on a plan B for the evening.

Hathaway was so engrossed in the problem that she saw fit to release a statement to the press explaining her eleventh hour costume-ditch. “Though I love the dress I did wear, it was a difficult last-minute decision as I had so looked forward to wearing Valentino in honor of the deep and meaningful relationship I have enjoyed with the house and with Valentino himself. I deeply regret any disappointment caused.”

It would appear Anne Hathaway’s turn as Fantine in Les Miserables has attracted more musical attention. She’s now set for music-based movie called Song One, which is being produced by her husband Adam Shulman.

She will star alongside Joe Flynn - a Brit who sings for a band called Johnny Flynn And The Sussex Wit. Hathaway will play an archaeologist who falls for a musician. Hathaway has won praise for her Les Mis performance, and, perhaps more importantly, lots of awards, and is one of the frontrunners for tomorrow’s night Oscar ceremony, where she’s got a great chance of grabbing Best Supporting Actress. Perhaps she won’t even have to audition for this role, but this wasn’t the case when she went for the Les Mis role. "Everyone auditioned - Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway and even Russell Crowe. But I think it was good because it created a level playing field where no one had a pre-ordained right to get the part,” Les Mis director told Sky News.

A poll conducted by voters reveals that the American public have got Jennifer Lawrence pegged as the winner of the Best Actress Oscar, for her performance in Silver Linings Playbook. Lawrence has already bagged a Golden Globe, a Satellite Award, and a Screen Actors Guild Award, amongst others and the voters in Reuters’ poll seem pretty confident that she can repeat that success at next weekend’s Academy Awards.

With 15 per cent of the votes, Lawrence may have been the favourite but her heels were being well and truly snapped at by Jessica Chastain, star of Kathryn Bigelow’s political drama Zero Dark Thirty, with 11 per cent of the vote. Of course, awards shows are all about surprises and the statuette could well be awarded to one of the category outsiders, such as 85 year-old Emmanuelle Riva (Amour) and 9 year-old Quvenzhane Wallis (Beasts of the Southern Wild). Naomi Watts is also nominated, for her role in the tsunami disaster movie the Impossible.

In the Best Supporting Actress category, 26 per cent of the 1,586 voters felt that Anne Hathaway was most likely to take home the prize, for her brief but powerful performance in Les Miserables.

This year biggest musical event (after the series finale of Glee, of course), the film adaptation of Les Miserables, will continue its already impressive run during the Academy Awards ceremony next month when the stars of the film take to the stage to perform songs from the hit musical.

The film's stars Anne Hathaway and Hugh Jackman, who both have Oscar nominations for their roles in the film, will be making their second appearance at the annual awards ceremony together, having hosted the event together in 2009. Both stars won Golden Globes last Sunday for their performances in the movie, which has a total of eight nominations for the Oscars.

Hathaway and Jackman are expected to be joined by fellow stars Eddie Redmayne, who plays Marius, and Samantha Barks, who plays Eponine, however it has not yet been made clear what songs the ensemble will perform on the night.

Well he'll be glad he didn't considering it got him his first Golden Globe, but backstage at the ceremony, Hugh Jackman revealed he nearly quit his role as Jean Valjean in Les Miserables, according to Etonline.com.

"Honestly, there was a moment where I was considering pulling out [of the film]," he explained backstage at the Globes. "...I'd just had a bad day at rehearsals and all I kept hearing was all the other great people that played the role, and I said, 'I'm going to do 'em a favor; I'm going to pull out now; someone else should take it.'" To his rescue, though, came his wife, who talked him out of being such a baby, and getting back to work. "[My wife] took me off that ledge, and she was right," Jackman dramatized. "Thank you, baby. Thank you for always being right. I'll never doubt you again," he added, also winning the award for the soppiest fella there. "I sort of weirdly knew that going in, whether I was good at it or not," he said. "As a role, 'Jean Valjean' is like a 'Hamlet.' So, it's probably why I was so terrified."

Les Miserables was named best musical or comedy at the 2013 Golden Globes, while Jackman and Anne Hathaway claimed acting prizes. The film's success could boost its chances at the Academy Awards come February, although it'll have to beat out strong favourite Lincoln.

Christopher Nolan's epic conclusion to the celebrated Dark Knight trilogy was released in the summer of 2012, with many critics agreeing that it was already a viable contender for Oscar season, but of the 24 categories on offer, The Dark Knight Rises didn't receive a single nod.

Everyone seems to be up in arms over Ben Affleck's omission from the Best Director category, or over Skyfall's similarly unanimous snub (although, rightly so, it has been given the nod for Best Cinematography as well as nominations for its soundtrack and editing), but it does come as quite a surprise to see so few remarks about the lack of Batman at The Oscars.

Ok, we all agree that the film maybe wasn't overall as good as its predecessor The Dark Knight, but it was still one hell of a show (and how was Tom Hardy supposed to compete with Heath Ledger's Joker). From the colossal set designs (Bane's sewer-based lair), the quite brilliant costumes on show (Catwoman and Bane's mask) and the film's deep underlying messages reflecting our own world, raising questions about class, wealth and power, has a more deserving and appropriate for our time film been made this year? You'd have to say no, not really.

Anne Hathaway might have won the Critics’ Choice Award for Best Supporting Actress last night (January 10), but she wasn’t in much of a mood to be thankful them for it, after they spelt her name wrong.

"This is a bittersweet moment for me because I have this award, but you spelled my name wrong," she announced, according to Us Magazine. It turned out that in the video package precluding the award’s ceremony – with her Les Miserables co-star Eddie Redmayne presenting her - Hathaway's first name was misspelled as ‘Ann’. "It is with an 'e'," she said tersely. "It's probably in bad taste for me to point that out here."

She softened as she continued her speech though, thanking the rest of the Les Miserables cast and crew as well as her “new husband” Adam Shulman. Hathaway has much bigger things on the horizon, possibly starting this weekend where she is up for Best Supporting Actress at the Golden Globes. She’ll hoping her awards season will then be ending with a bang next month after being nominated for a Best Supporting Actress statuette at the Oscars."I started crying and I started laughing, and then doing both at the same time," she told the New York Daily News of learning of the nomination. "And then the calls and the texts starting coming in."

Today marks the day of the Oscars 2013 Nominations announcement. The Oscars, of course, are voted for by the great and the good of the movie world. If the American public had their say, though, we could tell you right now who would be walking away with those gold statuettes, because Reuters and Ipsos have conducted a very useful poll, telling us just that.

According to the online poll, the US public would like to see Lincoln and Les Miserables do well at the awards ceremony and would be happy if either one of those walked away with the Best Picture gong (of course, we all know it’s going to be Lincoln, right?). Anne Hathaway and Daniel Day Lewis were also favourites in the Best Actress / Actor stakes and The Hobbit, Life of Pi and Django Unchained were also popular choices amongst US citizens. It’s worth noting though that around 52 per cent of the 951 people voting in the poll had not seen any of the 24 films on the Ipsos list so it’s probably not the best indicator of what’s going to happen on awards night.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will be streaming the Oscars nominations live today at 8:30am ET / 5:30am PT / 1:30pm GMT.

The National Board Of Review Awards took place last night (January 8, 2013), with many evidently viewing the bash as a warm-up before the Oscar nominations get announced tomorrow (January 10, 2013). As such, some of the names who may well be featuring in less than 24 hours time were on the red carpet, including Skyfall's Daniel Craig, Argo director and actor Ben Affleck, stars from Les Miserables including Anne Hathaway and Amanda Seyfried, and many more.

While the singing in Les Mis has been criticised as being 'rough', Anne Hathaway's overall performance - much like the overall film - has been lauded. Following a fantastic performance at the box office, Hathaway had admitted to being inspired by Susan Boyle's performance of 'I Dreamed A Dream'

Boyle sung the song for her Britain's got Talent audition, and Hathaway - as Fantine in the film - belts it out. The actress told OK! Magazine, via Gigwise, "I think she's adorable, and her story was so heart-warming. Before I knew I was going to play Fantine, I'd watched that clip (of Britain's Got Talent), when I was having a low day, and it just made me feel so wonderful. She added that, "The thing about it was of course her, but the thing that's also fun is to watch Simon Cowell's mind racing, as a producer and an adding machine! I just loved that clip!" Being littered with great songs, it seems difficult to pick one out, but for Hathaway, I Dreamed A Dream' holds a special place. "It was really exciting to take this iconic song, which is so beloved, and find a way to put it through the prism of film - and that meant having to go very, very, very deep inside myself to some uncomfortable places," she said. "But that's what we do, and those are the jobs that you remember and those are the ones that make you grow."

American Idol star Adam Lambert recently criticised the film, tweeting, "Les Mis: Visually impressive w great Emotional performances. But the score suffered massively with great actors PRETENDING to be singers."

Just to clear up any confusion over whether or not you thought Anne Hathaway was Rihanna, Anne Hathaway has very helpfully stated, in a Harper’s Bazaar interview, that she is not Rihanna. “I’m not Rihanna,” she stated, in plain English, to clear up any confusion, on the matter.

Of course, Hathaway was also trying to explain that people simply don’t find her cool, like Rihanna. Or sexy. Like Rihanna. “I'm not Rihanna...I'm not cool. When people come up to me in the street, they often want a hug not a photo, and they want that because they like my work...I had no grit, no sex appeal,” she told the magazine and said that the public’s perception of her is “very vanilla, very sweet, very accessible and not interesting.” Well, you know, we reckon the fact that she’s very likely to be nominated for an Oscar for her performance in Les Miserables is pretty interesting, but there you go.

The interview, republished by Entertainmentwise.com shows Hathaway in humble mode, though she’s looking pretty stylish in her photo-shoot for the magazine, gracing the cover in a strapless black dress. She might not be Rihanna, but why be Rihanna when you can be Anne Hathaway? Those Oscars announcements are due on January 10; our money’s on Hathaway getting a nod.

We could hardly bring ourselves to visit Russell Crowe's Twitter page when first hearing that he'd responded to Adam Lambert's criticism of Les Miserables. We assumed the boisterous Australian would take apart the former American Idol star inch-by-inch, so imagine our surprise when the actor appeared to agree with Lambert.

The singer had initially taken to Twitter after seeing the film, telling his two million followers, "Les Mis: Visually impressive w great Emotional performances. But the score suffered massively with great actors PRETENDING to be singers." In fact, his thoughts on the movie mirrored those of the critics, who gave the film generally positive reviews, though nothing out of the ordinary. Lambert added, "I do think it was cool they were singing live - but with that cast, they should have studio recorded and sweetened the vocals.The industry will say 'these actors were so brave to attempt singing this score live' but why not cast actors who could actually sound good?" Hugh Jackman and Amanda Seyfried have singing experience, though the likes of Crowe and Anne Hathaway were effectively debuting their singing voices for the first time. Crowe, who plays Javert in the epic based on Victor Hugo's novel, tweeted in response, "I don't disagree with Adam. Sure it could have been sweetened, Tom Hooper wanted it raw and real, that's how it is." MASSIVE anti-climax.

Les Miserables - described by Rolling Stones' Peter Travers as "perfectly marvellous" - is likely to score numerous Oscar nominations in the January 10 announcement. 

2012 has held big things for Anne Hathaway with multiple media appearances, a lot of activism and of course, the big one – a part as Catwoman in Dark Knight Rises. But that wasn’t all – in November, Hathaway married jewelry designer Adam Shulman and she is reigning in the new year with multiple award nominations for her highly critically acclaimed part as Fantine in the screen adaptation of Les Miserables. Although her career started out with parts in lighthearted comedies like The Princess Diaries or The Devil Wears Prada, the actress has talked about trying to shake off the squeaky clean teenager reputation.

The beginning of her career was a struggle to build a reputation in Hollywood. The actress graduated from New York University, all while acting in numerous flicks and steering away from the now classic story of a young actress’s fall from grace.

"I see the sort of work that people like Meryl Streep and Cate Blanchett and Kate Winslet can do, and I want to do that level of work so badly," the actress said to the LA Times. "But I don't believe I'm as gifted as them. So the only thing I can control is how hard I work at it — how much do I commit to it? How far will I take it?"

With Les Miserables performing well on the big screen, the critics on board and a strong financial return forecasted, the stars can finally sit back and relax after what sounds like an awfully hard production. 

Anne Hathaway - one of the film's many stars - has been talking to The Telegraph about her role in the film, which she described as a mixture of "anxiety, gratitude, excitement and nerves," before admitting that "There wasn't anything about this job that wasn't daunting."

Given the star-studded cast, it wasn't as if Hathaway was the only person feeling the heat to bring such a widely loved stage show to life on the silver screen. "It was exciting to work with everyone, to hear what they were doing," she said "I think hearing how talented everyone else was pushed us all on, pushed me on at least."

There is always some enormous risk in remaking well loved stories, be they originally films, plays, television series or literature. There will always be hype and there will always be people who prefer the original, think the film ruined the book, consider the remake redundant or those who simply don't like it. Along with all of these risks, movie makers also come across the problem of how to remake something while at once being true to the original and yet also being able to make their own mark on it. Tom Hooper has managed to tread these very lines well with his latest movie, Victor Hugo's Les Miserables.

Les Mis was loved even before it was published. Hugo was already a much adored poet and when the first of the five volumes were published in 1862 it had sold out in Paris within two days. With it's award winning and long running musical that has delighted theatre audiences for decades, the popularity Les Miserables has managed not to fade. Speaking to Time, Hooper explained his decision to include the brand new song, 'Suddenly', for Jean Valjean and performed by Hugh Jackman. "There's an inspiring line in the book" he says, "that goes something like... 'The bishop had taught him virtue. Cosette taught him the meaning of love'... these two epiphanies [are] the central transformative moments. The musical nails the first one but the second one is kind of underwritten." Adding, "So I took this wonderful paragraph and asked Claude Michel and Alain Boublil [the writer and lyricist], 'Can you write me a song about what it is like to fall in love with a child, to experience parental love out of nowhere?'" And they did.

So far responses to the song have been fairly positive, despite the mixed reviews it's been receiving, with Time's own review naming Hooper's direction 'bad', while Variety has said it would "have made Victor Hugo proud". Starring Anne Hathaway, Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Amanda Seyfriend, Helena Bonham Carter, Sacha Baren Cohen and introducing the adorable and talented Isabelle Allen as the young Cosette, Les Miserables will be in cinemas nationwide on January 11th.

Les Miserables may well score a plethora of Oscars at the Academy Awards in February, though it won't be on the back of critical acclaim. Sure, the movie has received its fair share of strong reviews, though a fairly average 71% on Rotten Tomatoes is enough to suggest that not everyone thinks the big budget project starring Anne Hathaway, Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe has worked.

Richard Corliss of TIME Magazine was the most biting in his criticism, though directed most of his venom towards director Tom Hooper, who scooped the Oscar of Best Director for The King's Speech a couple of years ago. "Tom Hooper's problem is soiling good projects with bad direction. Even if his Les Misérables wins as many Oscars as The King's Speech did, it's a habit he really needs to correct," he wrote. Ouch. Catherine Shoard of The Guardian seemingly had a terrible experience sitting through the musical-drama, "By the end, you feel like a piñata on the dancefloor: empty, in bits, the victim of prolonged assault by killer pipes," she said. The Village Voice's Scott Foundas had sympathy with the British director, suggesting, "The moist-eyed storybook romanticism of the source material proves resilient to [Hooper's] efforts."

Despite the mixed reviews, Les Miserables has emerged as the second favorite to win the Oscar for Best Picture, though Steven Spielberg's Lincoln is expected to take that honor come 2013.

Several British stars scored Golden Globe nominations on Friday morning (December 14, 2012), with Tom Hooper's Les Miserables looking the UK's best hope of scoring a statuette. The musical is in the running for Best Picture (Comedy of Musical), as well as a string of acting awards.

Though the Globes is considered a solid barometer for the Oscars, it has been criticised for shaping its nominations to attract as many big name stars as possible. In 2011, Johnny Depp was nominated for his role in the critically panned The Tourist, leading host Ricky Gervais to joke, "It seems like everything this year was three-dimensional.except the characters in The Tourist." Nevertheless, several lesser known movies from the past year received nominations, including Ewan McGregor and Emily Blunt's Salmon Fishing in the Yemen. Judi Dench received a nod for Best Exotic Marigold Hotel while Helen Mirren and Rachel Weisz will compete for the Best Actress (Drama) award for their roles in Hitchcock and The Deep Blue Sea respectively. "It's the first major red carpet occasion of awards season," said Nick James, editor of the film magazine Sight & Sound, "so the HFPA need the maximum number of dresses on that carpet, and the widest range of hot talent on their list. They probably have a small eye on that, but I don't think it's too bent in that direction."

Though British stars were listed in today's nominations, it is likely to be Ben Affleck, Steven Spielberg, Kathryn Bigelow, Daniel Day Lewis, Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathway who contest the major prizes.

Les Miserables has become the favourite to win Best Picture at the Oscars after being nominated for four prizes at the Golden Globes - a key barometer for the Academy Awards. Lead stars Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway received acting nods, Claude-Michel Schonberg and Alain Boublil are shortlisted for their song 'Suddenly', while the movie itself is shortlisted for Best Motion Picture (Comedy and Musical).

Largely shot at Pinewood studios, Tom Hooper's Les Miserables cost around £38 million and featured the actors singing every song live on set. Speaking to the BBC after the Golden Globe nominations were announced, The Kings Speech director said, "I'm just pleased for the whole team who made Les Miserables. Making a musical is an intensively collaborative type of film-making, because it requires such an army of people. An army who aren't there on a conventional movie. The singing teachers who helped the cast, through to the onset pianists who played in the live duets with the singers." Though musicals and comedies are often ignored by the Academy, Les Miserables has been installed as the 9/4 favourite to snatch the Best Picture Oscar away from the hands of Ben Affleck and Steven Spielberg in February. Hugh Jackman is now the third favourite to win Best Actor, though it would a huge shock should Daniel Day-Lewis not win the award for his turn as Abraham Lincoln. Anne Hathaway is favoured for an Oscar nomination, though the bookmakers still firmly believe Jennifer Lawrence will win Best Actress for Silver Linings Playbook.

Les Miserables hits theaters in the U.S on Christmas Day, with a UK release following on January 11, 2013. 

Hugh Jackman has had a good week, or at least a good day, as he got nominated for a Golden Globe and received his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame yesterday.

The Aussie actor just recently premiered his new film, the screen adaptation of Les Miserables (it’s pretty good, we hear) and is already being touted for an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of Jean Valjean. Can you tell we’re in the midst of award season by now? A star on the Walk of Fame is a pretty big deal, your name written in stone in downtown Hollywood and all, but Jackman accepted it with the traditional modesty "This is quite a ride... It's a surreal experience. I'm a kid from the suburb of Barunga, on the northern side of Sydney... This is completely surreal," he said, quoted by AFP.

The 44-year-old actor accepted the honor in the company of his Les Mis co-stars Amanda Seyfried and Anne Hathaway, as well as his wife and two children. He joked about using the award plate as a parenting technique: “Say 10 years from now, when they're remembering all the things I did wrong, it's gonna save a fortune in therapy - they can come here, graffiti it, stomp on it, spill their soda on it, whatever.” Interesting idea, to be sure, but perhaps those therapy sessions would be more effective after all.

To win a Screen Actors Guild Award is one of the most prestigious accolades an actor or actress can receive in their career. 2012 has given us some fantastic films, so the competition is even more fierce. We can all speculate but what do the bookies have to say? Paddy Power have compiled their odds, and here they are.

Daniel Day-Lewis is leading the pack for the coveted prize of Best Actor, with odds of 4/11. Having received almost unanimously positive reviews for his performance in Lincoln, this is no real surprise. He's beating competition of Flight's Denzel Washington at 4/1, Hugh Jackman in Les Miserables, at 6/1, The Sessions' John Hawkes at 7/1, and dragging a little way behind with 14/1 is Bradley Cooper for his role in Silver Linings Playbook. 

Silver Linings Playbook is doing considerably better for the prize for Best Actress, as Jennifer Lawrence is the favourite to win it for her role in the film, with pretty good odds of 8/15. Jennifer Chastain, who has also been praised very highly for her role in Zero Dark Thirty is the second favourite with odds of 7/4. Marion Cotillard has odds of 8/1 for her role in Rust and Bone, which is the film's only recognition in the nominations. Helen Mirren in Hitchcock has 14/1 odds, and Naomi Watts is bringing up the rear for her role in The Impossible.

In the run-up to the Oscars, the movie industry pays special attention to the smaller awards nominations, for indicators as to what to expect at the big event. So far, it’s looking good for Lincoln, the new Steven Spielberg biopic about President Abraham Lincoln. With the title role played by Daniel Day Lewis and a supporting cast featuring Sally Field, Tommy Lee Jones, Joseph Gordon Levitt and James Spader, there has been an ‘Oscars-buzz’ around this movie for some time now. And that buzz just got a little more deafening with the release of the Screen Actors’ Guild Awards nominations.

Unsurprisingly, Daniel Day Lewis is up for best actor, reports Los Angeles Times, with Sally Field getting the nod for best supporting actress and best supporting actor for Tommy Lee Jones. Lincoln is joined by Silver Linings Playbook (starring Bradley Cooper, Robert De Niro and Jennifer Lawrence) and Les Miserables, which gets a tips for best ensemble, with Anne Hathaway and Hugh Jackman leading the cast, there.

Dame Maggie Smith is the real star of this year’s announcement, though, landing more nominations than any other actor. She’s been acknowledged not only for her cinematic appearance in The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel but also for her small screen work on Downton Abbey, the British series that has really made waves in the USA.

Props to the main stars of Les Miserables, they're putting in the effort on the film's run of premieres. Anne Hathaway, Russell Crowe, Hugh Jackman and the rest of the cast were all out in force again at the New York City premiere of the novel adaptation less than a week after they'd ran the red carpet gamut in London. What a difference a continent makes, though; whilst across in the UK Hathaway and the rest of the female cast dressed prettily but conservatively, at the Ziegfield Theatre they held nothing back, both Hathaway and Seyfried causing jaws to drop with their outfits.

Anne Hathaway is back on the town and back to her stylish self after undergoing a massive transformation for her latest role as Fantine in Les Miserables, having been spotted around the nightspots of London shortly after arriving in the city.

Hathaway has made a series of appearances in the English capital since she flew in to promote the new film earlier this week, and it looks as though the actress was more than happy to finally be back on the town following her rigorous weigh-loss campaign for her role in Les Miserables. The actress dropped a further 25lbs from her already slim figure to get ready for her dramatic role as the Fantine, which involves her having to sell her hair and body in order to survive during the French revolution.

Anne and her fellow co-stars, including Amanda Seyfried, Russell Crowe and Hugh Jackman, were in the capital for the world premiere on Wednesday (Dec 5) night, with Anne out for a meal with a male friend the following night looking seriously glamourous once again. Despite having to go down to her super-slim size, the dedication may pay off come February, with bookies making her one of the favourites to take home the Best Actress Oscar next year. That said, she still has stiff competition from the likes of Jennifer Lawrence (Silver Linings Playbook) and Sally Field (Lincoln).

Awards season kicked off in earnest this week with two major critical bodies - New York Critics and the National Board of Review - both naming the Osama bin Laden raid thriller Zero Dark Thirty as their film of the year. Jessica Chastain stars in the movie, which reunites director Kathryn Bigelow with The Hurt Locker writer Mark Boal. The new trailer promises another exciting, intense military action drama.

Another major awards contender is Tom Hooper's film of the epic musical Les Miserables, with a high-powered cast including Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, Eddie Redmayne and Amanda Seyfried. All of them attended the glitzy red carpet world premiere in London this week. The film opens in America on Christmas Day, and in Britain in early January.

To undertake a cinematic reimagining of Les Miserables is to approach the proverbial poisoned chalice with gusto, with added virulent infections and - yes the cliched metaphors are done now - a rounded panning from the public and press, who have enjoyed the stage show and don't look upon change kindly. 

But that hasn't been the case for Tom Hooper, who bravely took the helm to take this iconic stage show onto the big screen. Featuring Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe and Anne Hathaway, and not to mention the brilliance of violinist Henry Salmon, 2012's Les Mis has enjoyed a positive reaction from a difficult circle of critics to please.

"Not only is Les Miserables a great film," write popular film website, HeyuGuys, "but it is now the textbook example of how to adapt a musical for the screen, all the while maintaining an utterly straight face. Glorious," they add, giving the film an impressive 5/5.

Les Miserables was never meant to be a joyous affair. It's very name 'The miserable ones' says that quite strongly, and it's a trope that has been used in other literature, notably in Bret Easton Ellis's American Psycho in which the stage production's posters are referred to repeatedly throughout the narrative to reinforce the melancholia of the novel as a whole. So it's no surprise Anne Hathaway found the whole ordeal fairly difficult.

Miss Hathway played Fantine who suffers from tuberculosis while being forced into resorting to prostitution and selling her own hair to be able to pay for the care of her daughter, born out of wedlock. Not a happy story. Hathaway had to lose a lot of weight for the role to look truly sickly. She refuses to answer questions about how she lost the weight, and told Access Hollywood, "I don't answer that question. Not to like get super serious about it, but just there's so many people out there that will try something unhealthy to lose weight... I don't want to contribute to that."

Not only does it show her to be an empathetic creature, but also implies that the experience for her was a painful one. She's a vegan so her relationship with food is undoubtedly an important one, and she revelled in the food she's been eating since- and for her first post-fast meal: "I had spelt pasta with garlic oil and like a lot of beautiful fresh tomatoes and then I had a twice baked potatoes, with basil sun dried tomatoes [and] oil. It was so good." Yum!

Anne Hathaway and her fellow cast members in Les Miserables were forced to sing live, MTV News have reported. They spoke to the movie’s director, Tom Hooper, who explained that it was of the utmost importance to have the actors singing live, to make the performances believable. The cast agreed, so Hathaway, Russell Crowe and Hugh Jackman all had to put their vocal talents on display if they wanted to be part of the film.

“The whole sense that the character is producing the song, rather than the character is following a song, completely changes the medium of the music,” Hooper told MTV. “It's amazing how much more visceral and how much more real it is. I, for one, find lip-syncing; it's always made me find it fake. Even the great musicals, I have to kind of forgive them for miming. It's a real step forward in the form, which we are all really excited to be involved in.” Hathaway reportedly spent four months with a vocal coach before joining the rest of the coach for the nine-week filming schedule and it looks as though her hard work paid off.

The movie version of Les Miserables premiered at New York’s Lincoln Center. The Hollywood Reporter say that although Anne Hathaway’s performance as Fantine is a brief one, she makes an “indelible impression” and already, mutterings of potential Oscar nominations have begun to surface.

It’s been a long time since a movie musical challenged for an Oscar, yet with the predictions and rumors starting to fly round there are suggestions that one could be in the reckoning to take the main Academy Award for the first time since Chicago triumphed way back in 2002.

In fairness, if Les Miserables was decent it was always going to have a chance; the book was considered one of the finest novels of the 19^th century, whilst the musical was one of the most high profile of the last century. Switching it to film though obviously had a huge pressure, and people finally got a chance to see how British filmmaker Tom Hooper had handled that as his film of Les Miserables screened for the first time last Friday (November 23), according to The Hollywood Reporter.

No one at the screening, which took place at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall, was allowed to give their review of the film. What can be revealed is that Hooper himself was there and addressed the crowd. "I'm grateful that I finished it [the film]... “ he said in a speech, adding “I'm grateful to the thousands of people who have been on this journey, particularly the wonderful cast... and I'm grateful to Victor Hugo (who wrote the novel upon which the Broadway play upon which the film is derived), who unfortunately can't be with us." Starring Anne Hathaway, Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe and Helena Bonham Carter among others, the cast certainly has the chops for the Awards season, only time will tell whether the film matches up to the profile.

The race to the Academy Awards is beginning to hot up with movie executives beginning to hobnob with various industry people and drum up support for their respective films. Sir Anthony Hopkins recently explained how he refused to travel to New York just for the sake of speaking to the right people about his movie Hitchcock, and we all know what Joaquin Phoenix thinks of the whole charade. 

Though some people really want to win an Oscar. The people behind Denzel Washington's Flight have released a special trailer targeted at Academy voters, and the people over at Team Cloud Atlas would probably kill to just spend five minutes with one of the statuettes, any of them. One actress who would love to get her hands on the Best Actress gong for a second time (though she'd never admit it) is Marion Cotillard, whose turn in Rust and Bone has been winning quiet praise in the lead up to awards' season. The movie focuses on a man's bond with a killer whale trainer, which grows deeper after she suffers a horrible accident. Sounds pretty grisly huh? But the critics loved it, and lauded Cotillard's performance in particular. Peter Travers of Rolling Stone wrote, "As an orca trainer who loses her legs, Cotillard is astonishing, as is Schoenaerts as a boxer who helps restore her sexual identity. Audiard's hypnotic film means to shake you, and does." Tim Robey of The Telegraph said, "Cotillard, who's been waiting since La vie en rose for a role this substantial, is at her damaged, devastating best". 

For punters, Cotillard represents one of the best value for money bets of awards' season. She's currently available at 8/1 to win Best Actress at the Oscars - seen as a wide open race. Pretty much everyone knew Meryl Streep was going to win last year, though in 2013, Jennifer Lawrence (Silver Linings Playbook), Sally Field (Lincoln), Anne Hathaway (Les Miserables) Emannuelle Riva (Amour), Ouvenzhane Wallis (Beasts of the Southern Wild), Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty),  Helen Mirren (Hitchcock) or Cotillard could all scoop the prize.
