Arctic Monkeys are looking set to be the stars of the show at this year's NME Awards after the newly-released nominees list shows the British rockers sitting atop a pile of nominations higher than any other artist. The Sheffield group are up for an impressive eight awards this year and are only rivalled by Californian sister group Haim, who have gathered six, according to NME.

The band's fifth studio album, AM, rocketed to the top of the charts and has earned Mercury Music Prize and Brit Awards nominations, as well as critical acclaim. The R&B-inspired album faces competition in the Best Album category from Queens Of The Stone Age's ...Like Clockwork, In Love by Peace, Kanye West's Yeezus, Savages' Silence Yourself and Drenge's self-titled debut.

Additionally, the Monkeys are up for Best British Band, Best Live Band, Best Track for 'Do I Wanna Know?', Best Music Video for 'Why'd You Only Call Me When You're High?', Best Fan Community and Music Moment of the Year for their Glastonbury headline slot. Additionally, frontman Alex Turner is up for the Hero of the Year award.

Haim, who were picked as the BBC's Sound of 2013 last year, are fighting for Best Live Band, Best Music Video, Best Fan Community and Hero Of The Year awards, on top of nominations in the Best International Band and Best Band Blog Or Twitter categories. With their six nominations, the three sisters are streaks ahead of the next most-nominated acts which include Queens of the Stone Age, Arcade Fire, Lily Allen, Kanye West, Savages and Morrissey with three nominations each.

The winners of the NME awards will be largely decided by a public vote which you can contribute to by heading to the magazine's website. NME editor Mike Williams said: "The past 12 months of music have had everything - returning legends, era-defining singles, more albums with a claim to be modern classics than any year in recent memory and tons of massive live moments to celebrate."

The NME Awards will take place on the 26th February at London's O2 Academy Brixton.
