Armie Hammer Discusses THOSE Green Lantern Rumours

Armie Hammer

When it comes to the DC Extended Universe, those behind the movies that make up the franchise to-date have been meticulous and careful when casting the beloved superheroes and villains that have graced the big screen. While we've seen the likes of Ben Affleck as Batman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman and even Jared Leto as the Joker, there are still some characters left to be cast.

Ben Wheatley Threw His Cast Into Free Fire

Ben Wheatley Brie Larson Armie Hammer Sharlto Copley

Ben Wheatley is happy that these are small-budget movies made on his own terms. After finishing High-Rise with Tom Hiddleston and Luke Evans, he turned to Free Fire. The idea came from reading transcripts of real police shootouts that are far messier than the movies ever portray them. "That was the beginning point for me," Wheatley says. "I thought maybe there's something in this, a procedural thing about people in a gun battle in real time. I'm not saying that Free Fire is a documentary or massively realistic, but it relies on some of that realism."

He's not coming first anymore because of the expertly designed newest vehicle models; in fact, he's just suffered a major crash at the Los Angeles International Speedway which has put him out of action for some time. But he's just not ready to pack it all in just yet, even with competition the likes of the high-tech Jackson Storm. McQueen enlists the help of an enthusiastic young race technician named Cruz Ramirez, who teaches him that there are ways he can make it to the top again - he's just got to think outside the box.

The Birth Of A Nation Review

Very Good

This true story from 19th century America feels eerily relevant today in its depiction of the divisions that define society. It's an engaging film, sharply written and directed by actor Nate Parker to pull the audience into the world of a black preacher whose conscience simply can't take the injustice any longer. Some of the themes feel a little pushy, but the film has real power.

It opens in 1809 Virginia, where the soft-spoken Nat (Parker) works as a slave for benevolent owner Sam (Armie Hammer). The two grew up together, so Sam is familiar with Nat's intelligence and passion, and also with the fact that Sam's mother (Penelope Ann Miller) encouraged Nat to read and study the Bible. In fact, Nat is such a great preacher that Sam loans him to fellow slave owners to convey the Old Testament "slaves obey your owners" message. But Nat realises that he can't continue with this after his wife Cherry (Aja Naomi King) is brutally attacked by the cruel slave tracker Cobb (Jackie Earle Haley). And once Nat decides he can no longer support the immorality and injustice of the system, he has little choice but to lead a slave revolt.

Parker's script recounts Nat's life story with telling details, contrasting his engaging courtship with Cherry with the series of insults they suffer at every turn. Living amid such systemic degradation, exploitation and violence simply gnaws away at Nat, and Parker underplays him beautifully, letting the charisma surge quietly under the surface. Hammer is solid as Sam, although his innate compassion leaves Haley to play the villain of the piece. As always, Haley is great at this, igniting loathing from the audience with his first appearance. All of the surrounding characters are played with a lovely sense of realism, adding hints of texture to each scene but never too much personality.

Nocturnal Animals Trailer

For a short time, Edward and Susan had a happy marriage, they lived in a nice neighbourhood, Susan had a good career and Edward was not far from taking the bar. Susan lives a fast-paced life and as such barely sleeps and Edward would somewhat affectionately tell her that she's a 'nocturnal animal'.

25 years later, Susan has remarried a serial philanderer and her life is far from happy. Unexpectedly a manuscript arrives at her door titled 'Nocturnal Animals' and with the dedication to 'Susan'. She pushes the pages aside and decides to leave them but eventually she can't help but start to read the book that she inspired Edward to write.

The story that unfolds is an incredibly dark tale of murder and revenge and Susan is shocked and traumatised that she would play such a pivotal role in the creation of such a dark piece of work. Susan's interpretation and retelling of the story soon impacts on her life and is unsure how Edward's return into her life will turn out.

The Birth Of A Nation Trailer

Nat Turner was a former slave who on witnessing the scope of slavery across America chose to head a liberation movement in the form of a slave rebellion that resulted in a violent retaliation from the white supremacists in Virginia, 1831. This periodic drama film introduces the audience to the world in which Black people were enslaved in - inhumanly treated at the peril of the white race. The chilling shot of a young white child playing a game with a lynching rope around another black girls neck represents this serious period of history in a thought provoking scene.

Depp's Star Power Not Enough To Save Lone Ranger's Box Office

Johnny Depp Armie Hammer

It turns out Johnny Depp’s name alone wasn’t enough to save The Lone Ranger – a film that has seen an awful reception from the critics. While Despicable Me 2 grabbed a healthy $34m opening, the disappointing Western dined on a measly $9.7 – far below what the studio were expecting.

Johnny Depp TontoDepp and Hammer as Tonto and The Lone Ranger

"Simply because of the budget and Depp's star power, there were huge expectations for this film to perform well at the box office," Hollywood.com Box Office president Paul Dergerabedian said. "Any time you have a high-profile star in a brand name movie, it puts the film under enormous scrutiny."

The Lone Ranger – Is This Johnny Depp's Worst Film Of All Time?

Johnny Depp Armie Hammer

We all love Johnny Depp – come on, we do. But part of that unconditional love is accepting the bad things about him, and as it happens, those bad things come in the form of some awful things – Lone Ranger being the worst.

Not only has the Lone Ranger story been accused (multiple times) of being racist – the depiction of Native Americans is less that satisfactory – it’s simply not a good film. One peek at the Rotten Tomatoes page for it tells the whole story: a 16% rating, and it’s not like we’re waiting for some more to come in – this is it!

Disney's big-budget The Lone Ranger may only earn $50 million at the box-office this weekend after getting crushed by Universal's Despicable Me 2 in the opening few days of the box-office. The Steve Carell and Kristen Wiig voiced family flick is tracking for a $35 million Wednesday, whereas The Lone Ranger should only take around $11 million.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Despicable Me 2 will prove to be a huge box office hit over the Fourth of July weekend, with strong reviews and the hugely popular Minions leading the promotional trail. Meanwhile, The Lone Ranger - with Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer - is likely to take around $50 million, meaning it will need to do huge business internationally to recoup its mega budget of $250 million. Director Gore Verbinski and Depp reunited with Pirates of the Caribbean producer Jerry Buckheimer, though the Hollywood A-lister's casting as Tonto appears to have been a misguided move and audiences appear underwhelmed with Hammer as the Ranger.

You'd be forgiven for assuming Gore Verbinski's The Lone Ranger was still weeks away from its cinematic release, with animations Despicable Me 2 and Monster's University dominating the movie talk ahead of the weekend's box-office. Hell, people are still talking about World War Z and The Heat more than Johnny Depp's new movie.

The Hollywood actor plays the Native American spirit warrior Tonto in Verbinski's re-telling of the classic story, with The Social Network's Armie Hammer the underwhelming choice as John Reid, aka, the Ranger. It's difficult to figure out why Disney's big-budget new movie has flown under the radar, though a flurry of tragic reviews and grumblings over the representation of Native Americans has severely dented public anticipation.

Armie Hammer Reveals He Had To Go To Cowboy Camp In Preparation For "Lone Ranger"

Armie Hammer Johnny Depp

The Lone Ranger, Disney’s brand new riff on the classic western, had its glamorous premiere at the California Adventure Park this Saturday. But while the end result may have had all the glitz and glamour of a Hollywood premiere, the film’s star Armie Hammer explained that everyone had to get down and dirty during production. More importantly, the film, which bears the whopping pricetag of $250 million, was filmed entirely on location – with several towns, five miles of train track and two steam engines being created especially for the production.

"It was really helpful. It was the difference between standing in the middle of the desert looking at some of the most beautiful scenery you can point a camera at and standing in an air conditioned room at some studio going, 'This is a lot of green fabric,'" he told The Hollywood Reporter on the red carpet, adding: "It just made it that much more real, and hopefully, the audience feels it as well."

He also had a few kind words to add about his co-star, Johnny Depp. The partnership between Hammer’s John Reid (the Lone Ranger himself) and Depp’s Tonto is a key part of the film and apparently the actors worked as well off camera as their onscreen partnership made it seem. "He's such a great guy. Nicest guy in the world. He's fantastic," said Hammer.

Armie Hammer Hits '50 Shades...' Christian Grey Rumour On Head

Armie Hammer

With a name that sounds like the latest upgrade feature for a kid's Action Man toy crossed with a porn star, it may come as no surprise that US actor, Armie Hammer emerged as one of the strongest rumours to play the sado-masochistic billionaire of 50 Shades of Grey.

26 year-old Hammer, who will play the titular John Reid in the upcoming western adventure comedy, The Lone Ranger, alongside Johnny Depp, is most recognisable for playing the Winklevoss twins in 2010's The Social Network.

However, the LA-born actor has dismissed reports that he will be the man to take up the leather paddle, in an interview with Playboy: "No-one actually offered me the movie, but while I was working on Lone Ranger my agent brought it up, and I said "Nope". I mean, come on - it's just mommy porn."

Johnny Depp's Lone Ranger Make-Up Made The Actor Almost Unrecognisable

Johnny Depp Armie Hammer Jerry Bruckheimer William Fichtner

He's one of the most recognisable faces in the world and quite possibly the biggest movie-star of the moment, but when he put on his face-covering make-up for his role as Tonto in The Lone Ranger Johnny Depp was rendered unrecognisable to a number of people on the set of his new film, including some he's known for years.

The actor was speaking to MTV this week when he remembered that the first time make-up artist Joel Harlow transformed him into his next on-screen character that Jerry Bruckheimer, the movie's producer and the man who has worked with Depp throughout the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, didn't have the faintest idea that it was him behind all that make-up.

"Joel Harlow built the makeup and he came over and took some pictures," Depp said in his featurette for MTV, with Harlow adding, "I took those photographs to Jerry Bruckheimer, Johnny showed it to Jerry and Jerry said, 'This is great; who is this?'"

John Reid is a Texas ranger; law-abiding and glad to ride alongside his brother, following in his father's footsteps. However, enforcing the law is the last thing on his mind when his brother is killed in an ambush. When he wakes after the attack, injured, he is confronted by Tonto; a strange Native American spirit warrior who wishes to team up with him and seek justice. Reid must abandon the law, and fight the real crime in the town and so he dons his mask and dubs himself Lone Ranger and with Tonto, vows to protect the people from the impending insidious threat.

Here is the Walt Disney Pictures adaption of the 50s Western TV show 'The Lone Ranger' that first gained public attention as a radio show in the 30s. It's an amusing and truly stunning take on the story featuring an all-star cast with direction from the Oscar winning Gore Verbinski ('Pirates of the Caribbean', 'Rango', 'The Ring', 'Mousetrap'). The screenwriting group includes Oscar nominees Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio ('The Mask of Zorro', 'Pirates of the Caribbean', 'Shrek') as well as Justin Haythe ('The Clearing', 'Revolutionary Road'). The movie is set for release in UK cinemas everywhere from August 9th 2013.

Johnny Depp To Star As Notorious Boston Gangster In 'Black Mass'

Johnny Depp Armie Hammer Barry Levinson

Johnny Depp will take on the role of the notorious Boston-based gangster Whitey Bulger in the upcoming film Black Mass, it was announced yesterday by the film's producers.

The project, which will be directed by Barry Levinson (who won an Oscar for directing Rain Man), will follow the life of one of America's most infamous organised crime barons and will be adapted from the book on Whitey's life, also called Black Mass, by Boston journalists Dick Lehr and Gerard O'Neill. Whitey rose through the ranks of Boston's criminal underworld before becoming an informant for the FBI in a bid to get rid of a gangster rival. He was eventually arrested in 2011.

The film is being produced by Cross Creek and will be distributed by Universal Studios, the statement (from Cross Creek) also said, with filming for the project getting under way in May this year. Prior to this, Depp will next be seen in the upcoming Disney reboot of the family western The Lone Ranger, in which he will play the Ranger's (played by Armie Hammer) Native American sidekick Tonto. The Lone Ranger will be released 3 July 2013 in the US and 9 August in the UK.

The Lone Ranger Returns With Super Bowl Ad Preview

Johnny Depp Armie Hammer Gore Verbinski

Ah, the Super Bowl, the time of year when we all get super-hyped about American Football, even those of us that don’t really give it a second thought for the rest of the year. It’s also the time of year, of course, that the major movie studios show us where they’re throwing their weight, treating their biggest players to a prime-time Super Bowl advert. It’s one of the most lucrative advertising slots of the year, with major companies vying to out-do each other, year upon year.

Deadline announced that the Lone Ranger will be one of the movies to show a trailer during the Super Bowl coverage; one of the few that have already had trailers out (as well as Iron Man 3). Starring Johnny Depp as Tonto and Armie Hammer as the title character, there have already been two trailer releases for The Lone Ranger, showcasing Gore Verbinski’s comic action adventure and now we’ll get a new 90 second trailer. It’s the classic tale of John Reid, a man of the law turned lone ranger fighting for justice. It looks as though the real star of the show, though, is going to be Johnny Depp, in the role of Tonto, a man of few words, but poignant ones.

Also being treated to a Super Bowl airing will be The Fast and the Furious 6 (… yes, ‘6.’ We know… We know…), Oz: The Great And Powerful and a 30 second ad for Star Trek Into Darkness.

Armie Hammer Praises Johnny Depp In Lone Ranger

Johnny Depp Armie Hammer

It's not as if we needed to be told, but Johnny Depp's performance in The Lone Ranger, according to co-star Armie Hammer, is fantastic. Hammer - who plays the titular role in the film, has described Depp as ""f*cking beautiful."

Directed by Gore Verbinski, the man behind Pirates of The Caribbean, The Lone Ranger will see a successful partnership reinstated. "Pardon my French," remarks Hammer," but it is f---ing beautiful," he says of Depp's performance. "It's so much fun watching Johnny do what he's so good at: larger than life characters who feel so real. There will be lines in the script, and then Johnny says, 'Wouldn't it be funnier if I just do this with a look?' Everybody goes, 'Well, I don't know if that's possible; the audience needs to understand this.' And he'll go, 'No, no, like this.' And he'll do the look, and everyone will say, 'That's perfect!' He knows what he does well, and he does it well for sure."

On August 12, 2011, Disney announced that production on The Lone Ranger would be delayed due to budget concerns. "When I signed onto the movie, I looked at the budget: '$250 million? Where's all of that going to?' And then I showed up on set and saw the scale of what they'd done, and it made total sense," Hammer added to MTV.

The Lone Ranger Trailer

John Reid bears the alias of the Lone Ranger and uses his title and his mask to fight for justice and maintain the law. He's Texas born, never removes his disguise and fights for peace in his troubled town with his Native American friend Tonto who is a spirit warrior with a personality a mile away from that of the Ranger but they still remain loyal companions on their journey to eliminate crime in their quiet town.

It started out as a thirties radio show before becoming a hit TV series in the fifties, and now it has been adapted by Walt Disney Pictures for the silver screen. 'The Lone Ranger' is an exciting contemporary version of this much-loved tale with high-energy action and much in the way of humour. It's a wonderful take on the famous partnership that is masked hero Tonto and his faithful 'kemosabe'. Oscar winning movie genius Gore Verbinski returned to Walt Disney to work on the movie with Hollywood superstar Johnny Depp in his wake having previously worked on the film company's epic film series 'Pirates of the Caribbean'. The screenwriters include the writers of masked crusader 'The Mask of Zorro' Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio, with Justin Haythe ('The Clearing', 'Revolutionary Road'). It is set to hit cinemas across the UK on August 9th 2013.

Johnny Depp To Star In Transcendence

Johnny Depp Armie Hammer Helena Bonham Carter

Johnny Depp is set to star in Transcendence, the new movie from Oscar-winning cinematographer Wally Pfister, who worked on Batman: The Dark Knight Rises, The Huffington Post reports.

"I'm thrilled, and feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to work with Johnny," Pfister, sounding confident in the negotiations, said in a statement. "He is a creative and intelligent artist whom I feel will bring great depth to the character and the overall narrative." Depp's next cinematic outing will be in Lone Ranger, in which the star dons an eagle crown as Tonto, but little is known about the film he could be working on next. "I can't talk too much about it. It's a present-day science fiction film, a fairly big concept," he said. "It's bigger budget -- not as big as 'Batman,' but not independent." Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas are producers on 'Transcendence'." Pfister, who won his Academy Award for his work on Inception, is trying something new with direction, after gaining recognition as a prominent cinematographer.

Lone Ranger, which stars Armie Hammer as the titular role, and, as she so often does, sees Helena Bonham Carter team up with Depp once again, is set for a U.S release on July 3rd, 2013. Depp is set to follow up four successful Pirates of The Caribbean films with the 5th (and surely final) film, which has been confirmed by the studio, although it's far too early for a release date yet. Think 2016, at a guess.

Drugs And Loaded Gun Seized: Nelly’s Tour Bus Raided In Sierra Blanca

Nelly Willie Nelson Armie Hammer Snoop Dogg Fiona Apple

Nelly’s tour bus was searched at a border patrol in Sierra Blanca, Texas. Heroin was uncovered, alongside a loaded firearm, reports MTV.

The rapper was detained on Wednesday night (October, 9 2012) but wasn’t arrested, after Brian Keith Jones – a man on the bus with him – admitted to being the proprietor of the 0.64 ounces of heroin, more than 10 pounds of marijuana and a loaded .45-caliber pistol. He was, of course, subsequently arrested after the dogs sniffed out his batch of illegal stuff. “It is my understanding a member of my staff made an unfortunate decision to bring unlawful materials onto our tour bus that resulted in his arrest this morning,” NME reported Nelly as saying. “Neither I nor anyone else on the tour bus was aware of his decision to bring these on board. Law enforcement officials did not press charges against anyone other than that individual.”

Sierra Blanca seems like a honey trap for celebs that insist on smuggling narcotics: Willie Nelson, Armie Hammer, Snoop Dogg and, most recently, Fiona Apple have all been arrested for drug possession in the Texas town. "Most of the people were very nice to me," Apple said of her arrest. "There are four of you out there, and I want you to know I heard everything you did, I wrote it all down with your names and everything you did and said stupidly thinking I couldn't hear and see you."

The Lone Ranger Trailer Online: Can Johnny Depp Transform Tonto?

Johnny Depp Helena Bonham Carter Armie Hammer Gore Verbinski

Johnny Depp has given us the first taste of his performance as Tonto as the first Lone Ranger trailer goes online. Flanked by his familiar onscreen companion, Helena Bonham Carter and with Armie Hammer in the title role, we only get a glimpse of Depp’s voice as Tonto; as he sits astride his horse, on top of a cliff, next to The Lone Ranger and says in a gruff voice “there comes a time… when good man must wear mask” and the camera pans out to Depp and Hammer’s faces; Depp doused in tribal face paint and Hammer’s face obscured by a black eye mask.

Set in America at a time of industrial revolution, The Lone Ranger tells the tale of a former Texas Ranger fighting injustice in the Wild West. The movie s directed by Gore Verbinski and movie fans were treated to an image of Tonto and The Lone Ranger and now, we have a teaser trailer to feast our eyes upon. The movie’s not released until August 2013, so there’s a long wait until we get to see the whole thing; with Depp in top-billing though, the hype will be sure to build between now and then.

What we do learn from this brief clip though is that we’re gonna get to see some classic steam-era train-robbery action. Johnny Depp will most likely being turning the stereotype of Tonto – which means ‘dumb’ in Spanish – on its head and it looks as though Tonto will be more than just a sidekick; more likely he’ll turn out to be far wiser than his name suggests.

First 'Lone Ranger' Trailer Released (Video)

Johnny Depp Armie Hammer

A new Lone Ranger trailer has been released by Disney ahead of the film's release in 2013. The celebrated western character the Lone Ranger has been revamped and rebooted plenty over the past 60 years or so, but this could be his highest profile yet as he's joined by that most eccentric of Tontos - Johnny Depp. Depp teams up with Armie Hammer, who plays the ranger, in a film that's already caused its fair share of controversy, not least in deciding to cast Depp as native American Tonto. Depp is one quarter Cherokee however. Another worry is that Depp will overshadow Hammer, something that his outrageous costume for the film would suggest has foundation.

This new trailer doesn't really put that issue to bed, but it does at least provide a bit more of the backdrop for where the two characters will be vying for attention. A voiceover talks about how horses used to be the fastest that man could travel, only for wide shots to then focus on a steam train, the implication being that then change in technology is set to change the world, and those who control that change and control the world. Deep stuff. The 90 second clip focuses on action shots, not showing the two main protagonists until they sidle into shot about a minute in, looking over a great valley together. You can see it for yourself below. The film comes out next summer.

Fiona Apple Arrested For Marijuana Possession On Mexico Border

Fiona Apple Snoop Dogg Willie Nelson Armie Hammer

We're looking forward to seeing what long-winded song title Fiona Apple comes up with when she gets around to writing a song about this one. That's right, the singer songwriter who once held the dubious honour of writing the world's longest album title, was reportedly arrested on the Mexico border after being found to have marijuana on her persons.

Apple certainly isn't the first music star to be stopped on the border and found to have the green stuff on her. Willie Nelson, Snoop Dogg and Armie Hammer are three of the not-so surprising names to have found themselves in trouble with the law for possessing the banned substance. Apple was found to have hash on her as well as a small amount of weed and as such the 35 year-old is being held at Hudspeth County Jail.

It hopefully won't derail what's been a fairly promising comeback from Apple, who released her first album in seven years this year, giving it the typically long-winded title The Idler Wheel Is Wiser Than the Driver of the Screw and Whipping Cords Will Serve You More Than Ropes Will Ever Do. The album went to number three on the US Billboard Charts, although it hasn't got anywhere near sales of her phenomenally received debut album Tidal. Released in 1996, that sold some 2.7 million in the US.

Mirror Mirror Review

Good
Both lavishly produced and light-hearted in tone, this fractured fairy tale aspires to be The Princess Bride, and actually gets it right from time to time.

While it's too uneven and corny to be a classic, it's still a lot of fun.

After the King disappears, his daughter Snow White (Collins) is raised by her conniving step-mother (Roberts), who plots with her right-hand man (Lane) to steal the kingdom from Snow. Then handsome Prince Alcott (Hammer) arrives and shakes things up, immediately falling for Snow, which sends the queen into even crazier fits of jealousy. She sends Snow into the woods to be eaten by a mythical beast, but Snow instead befriends a gang of dwarf bandits (Povinelli, Klebba, Saraceno, Prentice, Gnoffo and Woodburn), who teach her how to fight back.

J. Edgar Review

Very Good
Exquisitely designed and directed, with finely tuned performances that shine even through some heavy make-up, this true story never quite succeeds in conveying its central relationship. Sure, repression is the point, but passion would have made the film heartbreaking rather than just sad.

John Edgar Hoover (DiCaprio) was only 29 when he became director of the Bureau of Investigation (later the FBI), and he ruled supreme until his death in 1972, holding eight US presidents in the palm of his hand with his notorious files of personal secrets. But he also had loyal friends, including his secretary Helen (Watts) and his right-hand man Clyde (Hammer). As a young man, his mother (Dench) instilled in him a hatred of liberalism and homosexuality, so his enemies included Martin Luther King, Robert Kennedy (Donovan) and himself.
