According to the Mirror, Cole reportedly threw champagne at Panayiotou at the Lure nightclub in Hollywood, yelling, "You know what this is for!" The incident allegedly sparked a "saloon bar brawl" style row, with the basketball player Nick Young and rapper Drake also in the venue at the time.

Cole is currently holidaying in Los Angeles after he was left out of Roy Hodgson's World Cup squad. He has now retired from international football. Cole may also be without a club side this summer, with his contract at Chelsea expiring on July 1 following eight years at the club. It is rumoured that the left-back could sign for Italian giants AC Milan though he also has interest from several MLS teams and French club Monaco. His Chelsea teammate Frank Lampard - also out of contract this summer - is reportedly heading to the U.S to play for New York City.

Despite his glittering career on the field, Cole has been associated with a string of controversies. In 2011, he accidentally shot a 21-year-old student on work experience at Chelsea with a .22 calibre air rifle. In 2009, he was held by police after swearing at an office outside a South Kensington nightclub and in 2010, Cole was convicted of a speeding offence.
