Avril Lavigne and Chad Kroeger have announced their separation after just over two years of marriage. On Wednesday evening (September 2nd), the Canadian pop-rocker posted a brief note on her Instagram announcing that she and the Nickelback frontman were going their separate ways.

“It is with a heavy heart that Chad and I announce our separation today,” 30 year old Lavigne wrote in the caption underneath a picture she posted from their wedding day. “Through not only the marriage, but the music as well, we've created many unforgettable moments.”

Lavigne and Kroeger met in 2012, having agreed to get together to write music for her fifth, self-titled album which was released the following year. They quickly got engaged and were married on July 1st, 2013 in the south of France. However, there had been occasional rumours over the last year that their marriage was on the rocks, which the couple had previously denied.

Lavigne had hit headlines for a rather more alarming reason earlier in 2015, when she revealed in June this year that she had been diagnosed with Lyme disease while on tour the previous year, a sometimes deadly condition that had left her bed-ridden for five months. She credited Kroeger with helping through her health crisis when she made an emotional appearance on ABC News.

The news of their divorce comes just a few days after Lavigne’s first husband – former Sum 41 frontman Deryck Whibley – got married to Ariana Cooper in Los Angeles. Lavigne and Whibley were married from 2005 to 2009.
