Celebrated Spanish guitarist Paco De Lucia has died in Mexico, aged 66.

The flamenco star passed away after suffering a heart attack during a day out at a beach in Cancun with his family.

His death was confirmed by officials in his hometown of Algeciras in Spain, where two days of official mourning have been declared.

De Lucia was a celebrated musician and composer, finding fame with his work in both flamenco and jazz.

He released a number of albums in the 1970s with flamenco singer Camaron de la Isla, and collaborated with jazz pianist Chick Corea on a 1990 record titled Zyryab.

He also made an appearance in a British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA)-winning film version of opera classic Carmen.
