Transgender musician Anohni has used the release of her new track to call on U.S. President Barack Obama to release Chelsea Manning from prison.
Anohni, 45, who formerly recorded under the name Antony & The Johnsons, shared the new video for her song, titled Obama, on Monday (05Dec16).
The video was accompanied by a lengthy message urging America's leader to release transgender Manning, formerly known as Bradley, who was jailed for 35 years in 2013 after handing over U.S. army secrets to the WikiLeaks publishing organisation.
"Obama, please let Chelsea Manning out of prison," Anohni's message reads. "Recognise her tremendous sacrifice, and her vulnerability.”
Manning, 28, is seen as a heroic whistleblower by some, after revealing secret messages detailing the U.S. forces' actions during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The former intelligence analyst has made multiple suicide attempts in the Kansas prison where she is held.
Anohni, who was nominated for Best Song at the 2016 Oscars, implored Obama to release Manning as she believes U.S. President-elect Donald Trump will refuse to after he takes over at the White House in January (17).
"With Trump incoming, if you leave Chelsea in prison she will never see the light of day, or worse,” she continued. “If you leave Chelsea Manning in prison for whistle blowing You send the final message to our nation that the Obama administration brutally punished moral courage in these unforgiving United States."
The message concluded with the words, "Have mercy on her, Obama, friend of the trans (gender) community: I implore you to Free Chelsea Manning."
