The Beach Boys stopped by Jimmy Fallon's show last night for a reunion performance, before putting on a show at New York's Beacon Theatre. The band plans to release a new studio album later this year and have already announced a world tour, to promote its release and celebrate the fact that they have reunited once more. The album, scheduled for release on Capitol / Emi, will be entitled 'That's Why God Made the Radio' and will be hitting the shops on June 5, 2012.
Chatting to Fallon on his chat show, Mike Love and Brian Wilson talked about the changes in the music industry, throughout the 50 years that The Beach Boys have been in existence. They also talked about why they still listen to the radio and when Jimmy asked them to teach him to harmonise, Beach Boys style, they happily obliged and allowed him to join in. Later on, they performed at the Beacon Theatre. A review of the evening for the New York Times revealed that it was the "amazing songs" that stole the show. "More than 40 songs breezed by in the concert, nearly every one packing musicianly marvels into its two or three minutes," wrote Jon Parales.
It wasn't a perfect show, by any means. Parales noted Mike Love's "thinning voice" whilst describing Brian Wilson's vocals as "determined but faltering." Overall, though, it seems the "aching memory and. heartbreaking vindication" of the evening bodes well for the band's forthcoming tour.
