David Fincher's Gone Girl Holds The Box Office

David Fincher Ben Affleck Rosamund Pike

David Fincher's adaptation of Gillian Flynn's bestselling novel Gone Girl has won the box office for the third week in a row in both America and Britain, a remarkable achievement for a two-and-a-half hour long mystery that loses its surprise value on first viewing. So audiences must be responding to its complex exploration of relationship issues, mainly how difficult it is to know what's going on in a partner's head.

Ben Affleck in Gone GirlBen Affleck in Gone Girl

This week in America, Gone Girl saw off competition from both Dracula Untold (which landed in second place) and Alexander and the Terrible Horrible No Good Very Bad Day (at No 3). In Britain, newcomers The Maze Runner and Annabelle were held off at 2 and 3. And the film shows no signs of slowing down, at $162 million worldwide and climbing. Competition this week in America comes from Brad Pitt's Fury, while in the UK the top titles are Palo Alto and The Judge. In both markets, romantic drama The Best of Me is also expected to make its mark.

Gadot was the surprise choice for the female role in Dawn of Justice though Warners are clearly buoyed by the Israeli actress's performances in the forthcoming movie. Maybe Marvel should take note and finally announce a Black Widow movie with Scarlett Johansson.

"Gone Girl" Scores Easy Box Office Victory Over "Dracula Untold"

David Fincher Ben Affleck Rosamund Pike Jennifer Garner

Well, it’s official – David Fincher’s Gone Girl is the winner in another weekend box office race. It wasn’t even a close one this time. On its second weekend, the mystery thriller saw a 29% drop, but still made it to $78 million.

Gone Girl, Ben Affleck
Gone Girl is Fincher's top grossing film to date.

With $26,8 million, Gone Girl narrowly beat our the critically panned Dracula Untold. The gory, vaguely historical flick came in second with $23,5 million, meaning that, despite abysmal reviews, Drac still has a shot at next week’s throne. Recently, director Gary Shore even let slip that he’s thinking about a possible sequel. Even though nothing’s been greenlit just yet, it looks like we won’t be rid of the Romanian prince for a while. Sigh.

Could Ben Affleck Return For 'Gone Girl' Sequel?

Ben Affleck David Fincher

Gillian Flynn had always played down the possibility of a sequel to her bestselling novel Gone Girl. After the insane plot twists and famous ending, the book and movie works well as a standalone piece of work - though given the box-office success of the latter, has Flynn changed her mind?

Ben AffleckBen Affleck is superb in David Fincher's 'Gone Girl'

Speaking to the website at which she used to work, Flynn told Entertainment Weekly in 2012, "I didn't write it as an open ending to set up a sequel at all. It was the only thing that made sense to me, that made sense to what was true to the book and true to the characters. Amy's not going to end up in jail. She's Amazing Amy!"

Is Ben Affleck Right About Islam?

Ben Affleck Bill Maher

Ben Affleck called out Bill Maher over his “gross, racist, disgusting” ideas about Islam during a heated debate on the presenter’s Real Time show on Friday night. Affleck took time out of promoting his latest movie Gone Girl to appear alongside author Sam Harris, former chair of the Republican National Committee Michael Steele and Nicholas Kristof.

Maher set out his stall early, telling Harris, "You and I have been trying to make the case that liberals need to stand up for liberal principles," Maher said to fellow panelist, author Sam Harris. “Freedom of speech, freedom to practice any religion you want without fear of violence, freedom to leave a religion, equality for women, equality for minorities, including homosexuals, these are liberal principles that liberals applaud for,” Maher continued, “…but then when you say in the Muslim world this is what's lacking, then they get upset.”

"Annabelle" And "Gone Girl" Race Toward The Finish After Successful Box Office Weekend

Ben Affleck Rosamund Pike

Before The Conjuring, there was Annabelle. The creepy little doll is on course to top the box office this weekend, checking in at $15,5 million on Friday. In contrast, David Fincher’s Gone Girl made just $13,2 million on its first day of release – a surprisingly high performance for a horror flick, especially with its release over the Yom Kippur. Things evened out over Saturday, however, and the two films entered the home stretch neck and neck, with numbers in the $37-38 margin.

Annabelle
Annabelle surpassed expectations, coming in second over the slow holiday weekend.

Both have exceeded expectations for the holiday period, since both movies cater to specific tastes. Horror flicks like Annabelle tend to have a reliable, but limited reach of just genre fans. Gone Girl, on the other hand, has received a lot of critical praise and like a lot of Fincher’s flicks, has very wide appeal. The suspenseful thriller dives deep into the psychology of a failed relationship and examines the connection between public pressure, violence and troubled relationships.

Bill Maher And Ben Affleck Take On Islam And Diversity On "Real Time"

Ben Affleck Bill Maher

Ben Affleck and Bill Maher just couldn’t see eye to eye on the issue of islam during Friday night’s Real Time With Bill Maher. Affleck appeared alongside other panelists, including author Sam Harris. The actor/director/producer quickly got into a heated debate with Maher, over the host’s negative portrayal of islam and those, who practice it.

Ben Affleck
In his speech, Affleck defended tolerance and diversity.

Harris expressed his stance on the issue: "We can criticize Christians…but when you want to talk about the treatment of women, homosexuals and free thinkers in the Muslim world, liberals have failed us. The crucial point of confusion is we have been sold this meme of Islamaphobia –where every criticism of the doctrine of Islam gets conflated with bigotry towards Muslims as people, which is intellectually ridiculous."

'Gone Girl' Faces Adaptation Challenge

Ben Affleck Rosamund Pike David Fincher

Adapting a mega-selling novel is always tricky, as screenwriters must figure out a way to keep the book's fans happy while transforming the material into a shape that works on the big screen for both newcomers and fans alike. In this sense, the most difficult genre to adapt has to be the mystery-thriller, which is probably why filmmaker David Fincher turned to novelist Gillian Flynn to write the screenplay from her own book 'Gone Girl'.

Ben Affleck in Gone Girl
Ben Affleck plays Nick Dunne in the movie adaptation of Gillian Flynn's novel.

The challenge is much greater than those who adapt sagas like 'Harry Potter', 'The Hunger Games', 'Twilight' or 'The Lord of the Rings', where the principle joy is in seeing beloved characters and events depicted on-screen with no surprises at all. But with a mystery, the movie must also grip the viewer.

Gone Girl Review

Extraordinary

Those who have read the blockbuster novel may be disappointed to know that author Gillian Flynn hasn't changed anything in adapting it to the big screen, so there aren't any surprises along the way. But they'll be glad to see the story so faithfully and skilfully adapted, with snaky direction from David Fincher and actors who add layers of new meaning to the characters. And non-readers are in for a thrillingly twisty experience as a mysterious conundrum shifts into a full-on thriller and then something much more intensely personal.

When Nick (Ben Affleck) discovers that his wife Amy (Rosamund Pike) is missing on their fifth wedding anniversary, he has no idea what has happened. As recounted in Amy's journal, their marriage has been a whirlwind of sexy highs and dark lows, as both writers lost their jobs in New York and moved to rural Missouri to take care of Nick's terminally ill mother. As a result, their marriage ran aground, and Nick increasingly turned to his twin sister Margot (Carrie Coon) for support. As two police officers (Kim Dickens and Patrick Fugit) investigate Amy's disappearance, the media circus begins to paint Nick as a villain, led by rabid tabloid-TV host Ellen Abbott (Missi Pyle). So while he suspects Amy's stalker-like ex (Neil Patrick Harris), Nick has little choice but hire a high-powered lawyer (Tyler Perry) to defend himself.

Even at nearly two and a half hours, this film races along breathlessly as events and revelations continually shift the perspective. It's clear from the start that neither Nick nor Amy (in diary-entry flashbacks) are particularly reliable narrators. Both are a bundle of secrets, although Nick remains far more sympathetic. Affleck gives one of his most textured performances in years as a nice guy who struggles to look "nice" for the cameras. His isolation and confusion are hugely involving, which contrasts strongly to Amy's far too confident point of view. Pike manages to bring out the peeling onion of Amy's personality beautifully, offering telling glimpses of the real woman beneath the characters she seems to always be playing. And the supporting cast add details that twist their roles as well. Dickens and Fugit are a terrific double act, while Coon and Harris constantly offer surprising hints about their characters beneath the bravado and concern.

Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner celebrated their nine year anniversary in Detroit on Sunday (29th June). The Hollywood couple have been spending time in the city as Affleck films his upcoming blockbuster movie, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Instead of jetting back to L.A. to celebrate their anniversary in the company of their celebrity friends, the couple chose to roll out a little old school romance and go on an intimate dinner date to a local Detroit restaurant, Bistro 82, a fine-dining establishment in Detroit.

Justin Near of Near Perfect Media, which represents the bistro's AFB Hospitality Group, spilled the beans on the couple's appearance, saying that they arrived in the early evening and stayed for an hour before going on elsewhere. "A lot of people did a double take," Near told ABC News. "It was just the two of them, just like any other couple celebrating their anniversary."

It has been confirmed: DC now has its Aquaman and it’s none other than Jason Momoa. The news that Momoa will play the DC Comics superhero Aquaman in both the upcoming Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice, and its sequel Justice League was confirmed by Variety, after months of heavy speculation.

Jason Momoa
Momoa cleverly brushed off the Aquaman rumors, right until his contract was confirmed.

Back in December, it was reported that Momoa was in talks to play Aquaman, in addition to the already announced main cast, which includes Henry Cavill as Superman, Ben Affleck as Batman, Gal Gadot as Diana Prince/Wonder Woman, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor (that announcement raised a fair few eyebrows) and Jeremy Irons as Alfred.

Batman V Superman Might Be The Dawn Of Justice, But Who Are The Justice League?

Ben Affleck Henry Cavill

The subtitle for Zack Snyder’s upcoming Batman v Superman movie has been officially announced as Dawn of Justice, meaning it's pretty clear where this one is going. We already knew that a Justice League movie was next on Snyder’s list, but the subtitle certainly implies that this movie will serve as a set up for the fourth instalment. But who are the Justice League and why should we be excited to see them together on screen?

Ben Affleck's Batsuit: Is It A Hit Or A Miss For Snyder's Caped Crusader?

Ben Affleck Zack Snyder

Finally we’ve able to feast our eyes on Ben Affleck’s Batsuit and well, was it worth the wait? In the black and white photo tweeted by director Zack Snyder a bulky Ben can, for the first time, be seen as the caped crusader, though he doesn’t look to happy about it. Sad Batman memes aside, Affleck probably will be cracking a smile soon as he might just have exceeded our expectations with his new look.

Ben Affleck Banned From The "Hard Rock" Blackjack Table For Age-Old Gambler Trick: Counting Cards

Ben Affleck Jennifer Garner

Ben Affleck might seem like the general “nice guy” type, but he has a few tricks up his sleeve. Affleck has reportedly been banned from the  Hard Rock Las Vegas Casino (well, the blackjack table anyway), after he was caught counting cards. According to the New York Daily News, the Argo director was playing blackjack, when his lucky streak attracted the attention of a security guard.

Ben Affleck
Affkeck's unusually lucky night caught the attention of a casino security guard.

“You are too good,” the guard told the Oscar-winning star Monday night at the casino’s high-rollers’ blackjack table, according to a source for The News. Then, in a rather embarrassing turn for Affleck, he and his wife were shuttled back to their hotel by a car, ordered by the casino’s management. Affleck and actress wife Jennifer Garner were in Sin City for a romantic getaway before Affleck starts filming his “Batman” reboot in Los Angeles and Detroit.

Ben Affleck Is "Welcome Back" At Las Vegas Casino Despite Card Counting Rumours

Ben Affleck Jennifer Garner

Ben Affleck is not banned from playing blackjack at a Las Vegas casino, contrary to reports which suggested Affleck had been asked to leave the establishment after he was discovered counting cards.

According to reports on RadarOnline, Affleck was allegedly caught counting cards at two Vegas casinos and an APB (all-points bulletin) was sent out to all casinos to be weary of the Good Will Hunting actor. Allegedly, the bulletin made casinos aware of Affleck's presence in Vegas and related the incident in which he was apparently caught counting cards. A note on the bulletin stated Affleck "has been observed playing blackjack at multiple Las Vegas Strip properties, and is suspected of moving his wagers with the count. He was reportedly backed off at one off-Strip casino."

The incident occurred, according to reports, on April 28th when Affleck was playing blackjack at the Hard Rock Casino in Las Vegas. Allegedly, Affleck was told by security he had to stop playing immediately. Affleck was visiting Vegas with his wife Jennifer Garner at the time of the alleged incident. Another casino also allegedly banned Affleck, namely the Wynn Properties resort.

Whilst card counting is not illegal, it is unacceptable in gambling establishments and casinos employ both security and specialist recognition software in order to prevent it. Affleck was allegedly using his chip stack as a means of counting the cards, a common technique professional gamblers use, according to reports in the San Jose Mercury News.

However, these reports may have been exaggerated as both casinos have denied any ban. The Hard Rock Casino in Las Vegas released a statement which reads: "Mr Affleck, a value guest of the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, is not banned from our property and is welcome back any time." The other casino in question has also denied barring Affleck from their establishment.

Ray Fisher Zack Snyder Henry Cavill Ben Affleck Gal Gadot Amy Adams

The Batman vs. Superman movie casting may have had comic book fans on the brink of desperation up until now, but it looks like Zack Snyder and Co. may have gotten one thing right. Meet your new Cyborg – Ray Fisher. Now, Fisher is primarily a stage actor, although that has been known to work for past superhero movies and he has been cast as Victor Stone. That’s all we know at this point, according to Variety. Early reports claimed that Fisher was being considered for a part in Snyder's Star Wars Episode VII, but it looks like he was transferred to another big-budget Snyder production.

Ray Fisher
Fisher's background is mostly theatrical.

The character has a minor role in Batman vs. Superman, but this casting and Fisher’s appearance are intended to pave the way for future appearances by the superhero within the Justice League franchise that Warner Bros. is setting up for. A little background on Cyborg: the character made his first appearance in 1980's "DC Comics Presents" #26. In the "New 52" continuity, he's a high school athlete who, after getting caught in a S.T.A.R. Labs explosion, is given powerful bionic abilities that lead to him becoming a founding member of the Justice League.

'Gone Girl' Trailer, A Critical Discussion

Ben Affleck Rosamund Pike

We’ve been waiting for the Gone Girl movie to come out, well, practically since the book did. The best-selling thriller was an international sensation, while the film is currently in post-production, due out in October later this year.  There's going to be a lot of discussion over this movie in the months to come, you don't adapt such a popular novel without a lot of debate over pretty much everything.

Ben Affleck
Ben Affleck stars as Nick Dunne in Gone Girl

Thankfully, the trailer has finally been released, but does it live up to our expectations? The answer to that is a big fat YES! And then some. So, let’s take a look at it in a bit more detail. Playing over the solemn opening vigil is Richard Butler’s version if Elvis Costello’s ‘She’. The lyrics “She may be the face I can’t forget, a trace of pleasure or regret, may be my treasure of the price I have to pay” drift eerily over shots of Nick Dunne, played by Ben Affleck, addressing a crowd who have gathered in the hope of finding his missing wife, Amy, played by Rosamund Pike. Amy has mysteriously disappeared, their home shows traces of a struggle, but Nick denies knowing anything about where she may have gone.

Ben Affleck Is Creepy And Questionable In First Trailer For David Fincher's "Gone Girl"

Ben Affleck Rosamund Pike Neil Patrick Harris Tyler Perry David Fincher

The first trailer for David Fincher’s Gone Girl is out. The last bit of news about the Gillian Flynn adaptation came out months ago, so the trailer provides a helpful reminder that A. The project is still moving ahead and B. It looks quite good at this point. Ben Affleck plays Nick Dunne, whose wife, Amy (Rosamund Pike), disappears on their fifth wedding anniversary. Nick soon ends up as the primary suspect in the police investigation  and has to find his wife to prove his innocence.

Gone Girl Promo
The first trailer gives us very little to go on.

The new trailer emphasizes the investigation and the pressure that Affleck’s character feels as the suspicion falls squarely on him. It also seems to feature Amy’s lifeless body, meaning that Nick will face a murder investigation at some point in the film. The trailer also plays up the barrage of media attention that Nick and the investigation attract, so this will probably be a prominent subject in the film.

The most shocking break up news of the week goes to Glee star Naya Rivera and now ex-fiancee Big Sean. The pair have called it quits amid rumours of infidelity and Rolex theft. Naya tweeted “@bigsean stealing rolexes from a lady’s house now. Maybe cuz I’m on Glee and making more money or something. #triflin.” Although the tweet was quickly removed, the plot is definitely thickening.

These others celebs also decided to end their very high profile engagements, although none of them accused each other of stealing expensive watches. Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck AKA Bennifer were a bit of an odd couple to even begin with. In 2003 the couple were involved in an extremely high profile relationship, going so far as to co-star in a couple of god awful movies. The engagement was broken off in 2004, allegedly because Ben wasn’t ready to give up single life. Which makes sense because a year later he married Jennifer Garner. Burnnnnn.

Unlike Jennifer Lawrence and her rather normal best friend, Laura Simpson, celebs often pick other famous people to have as their BFFs. They all probably bump into each other at so many events that it’s difficult not to end up practically joined at the hip. Some of these celebrity BFFs you’ll already know about, some you’ll be totally surprised to hear have even met!  The phrase chalk and cheese comes to mind.

Courtney Cox and Jennifer Aniston have been BFFs since their Monica and Rachel days. The pair have seen each other through weddings and divorces, children and various film/TV projects. “We just have fun, we laugh, we’re inseparable and it’s great”, Cox said of Aniston, while her best friend in turn dubbed her “the most dependable and loyal”. Mutual appreciation society, or what?  We love it!  That's how all best friends should talk about each other in our opinion.

Brad Pitt, Ben Affleck: Gwyneth Paltrow's Relationships Before Chris Martin

Gwyneth Paltrow Ben Affleck Brad Pitt

We were all surprised when Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin announced their separation by way of a post on Paltrow’s Goop website on Tuesday evening. The couple, who have been married for 10 years and had two children together announced they were ‘consciously uncoupling’, and thus the showbiz world began mourning another high profile couple. But for Gwyneth a high profile split is nothing new, actually she’s had her fair share of famous romances.

Gwyneth PaltrowGwyneth Paltrow has announced her 'uncoupling' from Chris Martin

Before there was Chris and before there was Angelina, Hollywood’s hottest couple was Brad Pitt and Gwyneth Paltrow. Although now the two might seem like an unlikely pairing, back in the mid nighties they were the hot couple of the moment. These two set out to define the era for star couples, sporting matching cropped blonde hair and sometimes even matching outfits, (too far). They even got engaged! Although they might have seem like a young Hollywood dream come true, sadly it wasn't to be and they split in 1997 after three years of dating. Gwyneth would later take responsibility for the break up, telling Diana Sawyer ‘My kind of internal stuff really tripped up that whole relationship and I felt really responsible, and also like I was the architect of my own misery … I just made a big mess out of it.’.

What Do We Know So Far About 'Batman Vs. Superman'?

Ben Affleck Henry Cavill

Star Wars Episode VII isn’t the only movie currently shrouded with mystery and dogged by rumours. Batman vs. Superman still remains an enigma to us, but we’ve done some investigation and managed to pool together what we know so far about the movie.

it has been confirmed that Henry Cavill will reprise his Man of Steel role and slip back into his very clingy superhero suit to play Superman (won't hear any ladies complaining there), although Christian Bale won’t be following (in his Batman) suit. Ben Affleck is billed to take over from Bale and don the Dark Knight cape. Website Movie Pilot is claiming that Affleck’s Batman will be forty years old and retired from superheroism. Since his retirement Batman has accumulated his gang of super pals, NightWing, BatWing, BatGirl and RedRobin. Batman’s best known sidekick, Robin, will allegedly have been killed by The Joker, who had returned to Gotham after the events of The Dark Knight Rises.
