The nominees for the 37th annual Golden Raspberry Awards, aka the Razzies, have been revealed and according to organisers 2016 was so bad for movies there’s more contenders than ever.

Leading the pack with nine nominations is Zoolander 2, described as a "15-years-too-late sequel”, which is up for nine awards, followed by Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, a "WTF comic-book battle royale,” which has eight nods.

Announcing the nominees organisers said: “The crop of cinematic crap in 2016 was so extensive that this year's 37th Annual Razzie Awards is expanding from 5 nominees to an unprecedented 6 contenders in each of its 9 Worst Achievement in Film categories.”

In the Worst Picture category Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Zoolander 2 are up against Dirty Grandpa, Gods of Egypt, Hillary's America: The Secret History of the Democratic Party and Independence Day: Resurgence.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is also up for worst remake, ripoff or sequel, worst screenplay, worst on screen combo (for Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill), worst supporting actor (Jesse Eisenberg), worst director (Zack Snyder), worst screenplay and worst actor for both Affleck and Cavill.

Affleck is no stranger to the Razzie awards, having picked up the worst actor gong in 2004, for his performances in Gigli, Daredevil, and Paycheck. But in 2014 he was given the The Razzie Redeemer Award, after he became an ‘Oscar darling’ for Argo and Gone Girl.

This year’s ‘winners’ will be announced at a ceremony set for February 26, the night before the Academy Awards. Nominees in all categories except for worst screen combo were selected by online votes from 1,014 voting Razzie members. The worst screen combo nominees were chosen by votes from thousands of users at reviews website Rotten Tomatoes.
