Ben Affleck seems to be another Hollywood star who is very interested in the world of politics, which was on full display when he engaged in a heated debate over Islam with Bill Mayer, branding the comedian's ideas "gross, racist, disgusting."

Affleck got very heated when debating about Islam

The 'Gone Girl' actor appeared on 'Real Time with Bill Maher' on Friday (Oct 3rd) and quickly began arguing with the talk show host as well as the panellists when discussing individuals who practice Islam, Affleck felt they were being unfairly broad about the issue.

"We can criticize Christians...but when you want to talk about the treatment of women, homosexuals and free thinkers in the Muslim world, liberals have failed us," he ranted. "The crucial point of confusion is we have been sold this meme of Islamaphobia -where every criticism of the doctrine of Islam gets conflated with bigotry towards Muslims as people, which is intellectually ridiculous."

Affleck, who believes the majority of Muslims shouldn't be viewed in the same way as radical Islamists, couldn't stay silent as the other panellists, including author Sam Harris, blasted the religion.

"[Your characterization] is gross. It's racist," he stated. "It's like saying, 'Oh, you shifty Jew!'"

And after Harris called Islam "the motherload of bad ideas," Affleck would once again become more agitated as he replied, "It's just an ugly thing to say."

Maher also criticized the religion by comparing it to the organised crime. "It's the only religion that acts like the mafia," he explained. "That will f--king kill you if you say the wrong thing, draw the wrong picture, or write the wrong book."

Before finally agreeing to disagree, Affleck finished by asking, "What is your solution? That we condemn Islam?"
