'While We're Young' Tackles Youth Culture

Ben Stiller Naomi Watts Amanda Seyfried Adam Driver

With his new film 'While We're Young', Noah Baumbach (Frances Ha) takes a complex look at the impact of youth culture on the previous, older generation. This is done by depicting the often comical interaction of two couples: Naomi Watts and Ben Stiller in their mid-40s and Amanda Seyfried and Adam Driver in their mid-20s.

Watts believes that the film pokes a hole in the current obsession with anything that seems young. "The funny thing about the film is that these people who pose themselves as this incredibly hip young couple turn out to be not as hip as they think they are," she said. "This endless fascination with the youth culture is there in all of us, and the irony of them using vinyl and typewriters and oh, let's leave it to questions and not know the answer, let's try and remember without looking things up on our phones! Ben and I are fooled into believing they are so pure. That becomes the genesis of our crush on them, and then we figure out they're not as authentic as they promise."

While We're Young Review

Good

Writer-director Noah Baumbach once again taps into a specific point in life with astute observational skill, even if the plot feels oddly forced. The vividly defined characters continually surprise with their awkward honesty, although this comedy-drama suffers from the contrived plotting of Greenberg (2010) rather than the free-spirited joy of Frances Ha (2012). Still, people on the cusp of middle age will find it hilariously, and worryingly, resonant.

In their early 40s, Josh and Cornelia (Ben Stiller and Naomi Watts) feel like everyone is judging them for not having children. And Josh has the additional pressure that his filmmaking career has stalled: he has nothing to show for eight years spent on his latest documentary. Then they meet 25-year-old aspiring filmmaker Jamie (Adam Driver) and his wife Darby (Amanda Seyfried), who inspire them to recapture their youthful interests in art and culture. Even their sex life begins to perk up. And Jamie encourages Josh to make progress on his movie, just as Jamie gets his own project underway, consulting with Cornelia's well-established filmmaker dad (Charles Grodin). But is this trans-generational friendship appropriate?

The fact that they even wonder that gives away Baumbach's own perspective, especially as he fills the film with witty contrasts that work a little too hard to make the point. For example, Josh collects CDs and DVDs while Jamie collects LPs and VHS tapes. Continual touches like this add lots of clever observational humour, although they also make everything feel a bit cartoonish and over-constructed. Plus of course the nagging sense that there's a right and wrong way these kinds of things should play out. Thankfully the dialogue is fiendishly smart, delivered to perfection by the gifted cast. And it helps that each of the actors are willing to be fairly unlikeable in his or her role, although Stiller is sometimes sent over the top with Josh's inexplicably harsh reactions to everyone around him.

Owen Wilson Felt Comfortable With Funny Co-Stars On 'Night At The Museum 3'

It's probably true when it comes to most family comedies that being involved is less stressful than a more serious drama, but Owen Wilson feels that doesn't ring more true than on the set of 'Night Of The Museum: Secret Of The Tomb'.

There may be a lot of chaos what with wild animals and cavemen running loose in London, but 'Night At The Museum' is a set that star Owen Wilson, who plays miniature cowboy Jedediah in the franchise, feels right at home on - mainly because of the stellar cast he has surrounding him. 'Working with Ben Stiller... we've worked together on a lot of things and for me it's just very familiar and very comfortable', he explains. 'And then Steve Coogan and Ben Stiller, that's who my scenes are usually always with... those guys just made me laugh.'

Ben Stiller "Definitely Would" Like Cara Delevingne To Star In 'Zoolander' Sequel

Ben Stiller Cara Delevingne Owen Wilson

There have been many whispers about the possibility of a follow-up to 2001’s hit comedy Zoolander, but one casting rumour seems to be solidifying. According to MTV, the film’s original star Ben Stiller wants British model Cara Delevingne to play a part.

Stiller was being interviewed to promote the third instalment of the family-friendly movies series Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb when he was asked about the existence of a sequel. He replied “There is a script, I won't deny there's a script, and there's been a reading of the script - but it hasn't yet been fully formulated.”

Ben Stiller Reveals His Wet Welcome To London During 'Night At The Museum 3'

Ben Stiller Robin Williams

For the recent third instalment of the 'Night at the Museum' series, Ben Stiller and the cast and crew of the previous two films travelled to London to film in The British Museum. But aside from the fun times on set, what did Stiller find to be the best thing about filming in the UK?

Well, "The best thing about filming in the UK," according to Stiller, "was the sunshine. Just loads of sunshine when we were filming there. And the warmth." He was joking, of course. "We filmed in January" he confessed, before explaining that "I think it rained every second we were there." This isn't exactly surprising, as January 2014 saw the south of England's wettest month on record, with around five months' worth of rain in some parts of the country. Stiller continued to say "all the exterior shots it would rain, and then when we went inside it would stop raining." He kept optimistic, however, as he explained "it was great because it looks good on camera to see the wet surfaces on everything."

"Battle Of The Five Armies" Trumps "Museum", "Annie" For Weekend Box Office

So, it looks like The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies has taken over the box office while no one was watching. Well, actually, it turns out a lot of people were watching, and the third instalment of Peter Jackson’s fantasy series checked in at $90,6 million domestic at the end of the weekend.

Martin Freeman, The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies
Martin Freeman and co. had virtually no competition at the box office this weekend.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, box-office comparisons to the previous Hobbit films aren't exactly parallel as the first two came out on Fridays, but The Desolation of Smaug launched to $73.6 million last year, while An Unexpected Journey opened to $84.6 million in 2012.

'Night At The Museum: Secret Of The Tomb' Bids Farewell To Robin Williams

Robin Williams Ben Stiller

This year's sequel 'Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb' may not be particularly notable as a special effects action comedy, but it's notable for containing Robin Williams' final performance, a third turn as a waxwork of Teddy Roosevelt brought to life in a New York museum. This time he travels to London for more antics at the British Museum.

When Williams died in August at age 63, he had completed his work on the film. So director Shawn Levy found it very emotional returning to the editing room after Williams' death. "It's sad, but I do feel in some weird way honoured to be serving this legacy of work, this legacy of performances of which this will be his last," he said. "It will be around long after him and long after all of us."

Night At The Museum: Secret Of The Tomb Review

Good

Now in its third instalment, it's clearer than ever that this franchise is based on one joke that has been stretched far beyond the breaking point. And not too cleverly at that. Fortunately, this movie retains much of the deranged idiocy that made the second part rather enjoyable. So it's watchable even if there aren't many new ideas, and even if filmmaker Shawn Levy is far too happy to settle for unnecessary digital effects work where a bit of character comedy would have been much more engaging.

Back on the job as a night watchman in New York, Larry (Ben Stiller) is now orchestrating the museum exhibits when they come to life to provide spectacular shows for visitors who think this is all a special effect. Even his boss (Ricky Gervais) isn't sure what's really going on. But when a glitch in the magical Ancient Egyptian powers causes chaos, Larry learns that he needs to travel to London so he can reunite Ahkmenrah (Rami Malek) with his father (Ben Kingsley), who's on display at the British Museum. Larry's teen son Nick (Skyler Gisondo) comes along, as do his revived pals Teddy Roosevelt (Robin Williams), tiny soldiers Octavius and Jedediah (Steve Coogan and Owen Wilson) and others. But in London, while sneaking around local night guard Tilly (Rebel Wilson), Larry's team awakens a statue of the knight Lancelot (Dan Stevens), who dives into their quest with rather a bit too much gusto.

Until Lancelot turns up, everything about the film feels oddly tired, from the starry cameos to effects work that strains to be clever. Then Stevens injects a badly needed jolt of blue-eyed charisma and warped comical timing that makes the rest of the movie rather good fun. Rebel Wilson's side-plot is also rather amusing, with some wonderfully ridiculous touches. And even the cameos get better, notably a scene on a West End stage that's genuinely inspired silliness. Coogan and Wilson offer some raucous banter to accompany everything that happens, and Stiller kind of hangs on for dear life. But the filmmakers don't really care about these characters; they're just trying to create something visually impressive that's also goofy fun.
