Streaming service Netflix has pulled off a major coup by landing the rights to 'Gotham' - the Batman prequel series yet to air its first season on Fox. In a deal between Netflix and Warner Bros. Worldwide Television Distribution, the streaming service will get exclusive on demand rights for the highly anticipated series, from fall 2015.

"Gotham is the most anticipated new series of the fall season and we are thrilled to offer it to our members around the world," said Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos in a statement. "The Batman origin story is sure to have massive global appeal so it is fitting that, along with Warner Television, we have created a new model for distributing a show that international and domestic audiences will love."

The show stars Ben McKenzie as police officer James Gordon, who would eventually become Gotham's police commissioner - as played by Gary Oldman in Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy. The show is set several years before businessman Bruce Wayne becomes the Caped Crusader.

Fox is betting big on 'Gotham' and recently released a four-part preview exploring the history and mythology of the characters. The show also had a huge presence at Comic-Con and a trailer and poster content has also been launched.

It's unknown how much Netflix has coughed up for the rights, though we imagine it's probably even more than the $2 million an episode it paid for NBC's 'The Blacklist'. 

Gotham is set to take its bow on Fox at 8 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 22. Channel 5 will broadcast the series in the UK - CTV in Canada.
