Biography

Billie Joe Armstrong (born 17.02.1972)
Billie Joe Armstrong is an American Rock singer best known as the lead singer of punk rock band Green Day.

Childhood: Billie Joe Armstrong was born in Piedmont, California and grew up in Rodeo, California. His parents are jazz musician and truck driver Andrew Armstrong and Rod's Hickory Pit restaurant worker Ollie Jackson. He attended Hillchest Elementary School in Rodeo where he recorded his first song 'Look for Love' at 5-years-old. He then attended John Swett High School, and later Pinole Valley High School in Pinole, California which he dropped out of. His father died from esophageal cancer when he was 10 and he and his siblings didn't like their stepfather when their mother remarried. At 10, he first met Green Day bassist Mike Dirnt. He father bought him his first guitar which was a Cherry Red Hohner acoustic and his mother bought him his first electric guitar when he was 11, a Fernandes Stratocaster that he called 'Blue'.

Musical career: Billie Joe Armstrong formed his first band when he was 15 in 1987 called Sweet Children. Billie and Mike were on guitar, John Kiffmeyer was on drums and Sean Hughes was on bass. Hughes left the band after only a few performances and Billie Joe renamed the band Green Day after their love of cannabis. They soon released debut EP '1,000 Hours' on Lookout! Records which they later combined with debut album '39/Smooth' and following EP 'Slappy' into the compilation '1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours in 1991. Kiffmeyer left to go to college in 1990 and was replaced by Tre Cool. Tim Armstrong from punk band Rancid asked Billie Joe to join his band but he refused. Green Day became mainstream with their third album 'Dookie' in 1994 and have since sold around 60 million records across the globe. He has co-written for The Go-Go's, Penelope Houston and Rancid. He has also produced an album for The Riverdales and was part of a side project called The Network which released an album called 'Money Money 2020' on Adeline Records which Armstrong co-owns with his wife Adrienne. In order to develop fresh ideas, Armstrong stayed in an apartment in New York City for some time. He fell into the wrong crowd of friends who spent most of their time drinking and he winded up getting arrested for driving under the influence on his way home in 2003. In 2004, Green Day released 'American Idiot' which became a major number one hit selling $15,000,000 copies worldwide and even developing into a Tony winning stage musical in 2009 which Armstrong briefly starred in as drug dealer St. Jimmy. In 2012, he announced the induction of Guns 'n' Roses into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. In the same year he became a mentor for Christina Aguilera's team on 'The Voice'.

Personal life: Billie Joe Armstrong married Adrienne Nesser in 1994 four years after meeting her at one of his band's shows. They had their first child Joseph Marciano Armstrong in 1995 followed by another, Jakob Danger Armstrong, in 1998. Together they own Adeline Records. He calls himself bisexual, and has said in the past that people struggled to accept it. He went to rehab in 2012 for substance abuse after performing at the IHeartRadio music festival in Las Vegas. Towards the end of the band's set, Billie Joe went on an angry rant when he thought their performance had been cut short and subsequently smashed up his guitar before walking off the stage. In 2011, he was thrown off a Southwest Airlines flight because his pants were too low. The airline later apologised and booked him for another flight. In 2012, he was rushed to hospital with gastric problems and was forced to cancel his performance at the I-Day Festival in Bologna, Italy.

"It's Pretty Bad": Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong Recalls Rehab Drama In New Interview

Billie Joe Armstrong Green Day

“It’s pretty bad.” These were the words spoken to Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong, by his wife, the morning after he fell off the wagon in a bad way and smashed his guitar up in a rage during last year’s iHeartRadio concert. In a recent interview with Rolling Stone (reported by Reuters), Billie Joe explains how his manager sent him straight to rehab after the incident, forcing the band to cancel the tour that they had planned to support the release of their three albums, Uno! Dos! and Tre!

Shortly after the incident in Las Vegas last September (2012), Billie Joe rang his manager, who told him in no uncertain terms “You're getting on a plane, going back to Oakland and going into rehab immediately.” Armstrong also explained just how bad his addiction problems had become. “I couldn't predict where I was going to end up at the end of the night,” said the 41 year old punk rocker. “I'd wake up in a strange house on a couch. I wouldn't remember how. It was a complete blackout.” Armstrong only remembered “tiny things” from his onstage rant at the Vegas gig.

Now that Billie Joe has completed his rehab treatment, the five time Grammy-winning band are due to go back on tour on March 28, starting in Chicago. Armstrong thanked Green Day’s fans for their support during his treatment.

Billie Joe Armstrong On Addiction: "I'd Wake Up On Couches In Strange Houses"

Billie Joe Armstrong

Billie Joe Armstrong has opened up about the extent of his problem with drink and drugs that eventually forced him into rehabilitation last year. The Green Day rocker recalls blacking out on various occasions and having no memory of what he had done the previous day. "I couldn't predict where I was going to end up at the end of the night," Armstrong, 41, told Rolling Stone magazine.

Billie Joe had worried fans after a bizarre on-stage rant at the iHeartRadio music festival in Las Vegas in September 2012, smashing his guitar to pieces after being told he had to wrap up the set. "I remember tiny things," the musician said of the incident, which prompted him to seek help. "The next morning, I woke up. I asked (my wife) Adrienne, "How bad was it?" She said, "It's bad." I called my manager. He said, "You're getting on a plane, going back to Oakland and going into rehab immediately." Green Day cancelled their fall tour and postponed a series of other dates as Armstrong began to receive help for substance abuse, however, it appears as though his behaviour had fallen out of control way before the music festival. "I'd wake up in a strange house on a couch. I wouldn't remember how. It was a complete blackout," he recalls.

Green Day are set to get back on the road in March 2013, in supporting of their recent trio of albums. The band has sold more than 65 million records worldwide, winning five Grammy awards.

Green Day Will Return For New Tour In March 2013

Green Day Billie Joe Armstrong

Whatever happened to the standard press release, or even just a notice left on the website of a band? That is not cool anymore, now Twitter, Facebook and Instagram have taken over, and Billie Joe Armstrong from Green Day has revealed that there will be a 2013 Greenday tour, much to the delight of fans worldwide.

"Dear friends" the screen-shotted 'notes' Instagram image said, "I just want to thank you all for the love and support you've showed us for the past few months. Believe me, it hasn't gone unnoticed and I'm eternally grateful to have such an amazing set of friends and family. I'm getting better everyday." He continued, "So now, without further ado, the show must go on... We can't wait to get on the road and live out loud! Our passion has only grown stronger... Happy new year... We love you all... Rage and love XX BILLY JOE". Oh, and with a little flourish at the end, he added "P.S... Green day tour in march".

2012 has been a difficult year for the band, seeing Armstrong have a melt down on stage, as well as having to cancel a stint of shows earlier on in the year. Armstrong has since been to rehab to beat an unnamed addiction and they've since released a trio of albums titled ¡Uno! ¡Dos! ¡Tré!

Ahh… 2012... how fondly we will look back on it. The Olympics. The end of the Twilight Saga…um… loads of celebrities going utterly bonkers, losing the plot, mixing their drugs with their anxiety problems, mixing their drinks with their driving, finding God, denouncing their generous employers, driving over members of the public, telling lies, heading off to rehab… the bizarre behaviour of a huge number of celebrities has kept the therapists on speed dial and the gossip mags in overdrive this year.

We’ve selected the best / worst falls from grace this year, so you don’t have to trawl through the half-hearted meltdowns to get to the real grit of the trials of modern celebrity life.

Green Day Launches New 'Twilight' Video For 'The Forgotten' (Video)

Green Day Billie Joe Armstrong

Green Day has released the official video for their 'Twilight' soundtrack song 'The Forgotten' which features on final instalment of the book-to-film franchise 'The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn'.

It's a romantic piano tune that speaks straight to the heart; coupled with Billie Joe Armstrong's soft but passionate vocals telling a melancholy tale of the two troubled lovers of the movie, it really does serve as the perfect song for the last part of Bella Swan and Edward Cullen's story. The video itself features clips from the movie as well as footage from Green Day's live shows making a great promotional feature for both the 'Twilight' franchise and the band.

The 'American Idiot' rockers have admitted to agreeing to do the soundtrack number because they wanted to be a part of the whole scene. 'We readily agreed because the films are an insane cultural phenomenon, and we have always been impressed with the way the Twilight soundtracks are so carefully curated', said bassist Mike Dirnt talking to Yahoo! Movies.  And it's just as well because GD fans are growing less than impressed with the band after they chose to cancel the rest of their tour dates for this year and the beginning of next year following concerns of Armstrong's well-being after being sent to rehab for alcohol and drug related problems.

It's A Dark Day For Green Day As Tour Is Cancelled

Billie Joe Armstrong Green Day

In a cruel twist of fate, and somewhat tragic irony, Green Day front man Billie Joe Armstrong has been forced to cancel the band's tour, in favour of spending time in rehab - a place uncannily similar, though perhaps a touch more serious, to what can be seen in the video for Basket Case.

After his untimely 'meltdown' at the iHeartRadio Festival in Las Vegas Armstrong has been admitted into rehab, which bassist Mike Dirnt describes as "no joke". This news has forced the band to cancel some dates of their tour, for which everyone who purchased a ticket will be able to get a full refund at the point of purchase. However, the third instalment of their trilogy of albums titled ¡Uno!, ¡Dos!, and ¡Tré! has been forced forwards to a release date of 11th December 2012, as opposed to January 2013 - a small silver lining for Green Day fans. Armstrong is currently suffering with substance abuse and dependence that he and the band hope to be able to work through enabling him to get back to what he loves.

"Obviously the timing for this isn't ideal, but Billie Joe's well-being is our main concern," Dirnt said. "We are happy to say that Billie Joe is doing well, and we want to thank you all for the outpouring of support and well wishes that we have received, and we can't wait to see you all again soon." According to Syracuse tour dates from January 7th onwards will be honoured at a later date.
