Billie Joe Armstrong has opened up about the extent of his problem with drink and drugs that eventually forced him into rehabilitation last year. The Green Day rocker recalls blacking out on various occasions and having no memory of what he had done the previous day. "I couldn't predict where I was going to end up at the end of the night," Armstrong, 41, told Rolling Stone magazine.

Billie Joe had worried fans after a bizarre on-stage rant at the iHeartRadio music festival in Las Vegas in September 2012, smashing his guitar to pieces after being told he had to wrap up the set. "I remember tiny things," the musician said of the incident, which prompted him to seek help. "The next morning, I woke up. I asked (my wife) Adrienne, "How bad was it?" She said, "It's bad." I called my manager. He said, "You're getting on a plane, going back to Oakland and going into rehab immediately." Green Day cancelled their fall tour and postponed a series of other dates as Armstrong began to receive help for substance abuse, however, it appears as though his behaviour had fallen out of control way before the music festival. "I'd wake up in a strange house on a couch. I wouldn't remember how. It was a complete blackout," he recalls.

Green Day are set to get back on the road in March 2013, in supporting of their recent trio of albums. The band has sold more than 65 million records worldwide, winning five Grammy awards.
