Disney Accused Of Whitewashing Over New Billy Magnussen Role

Disney Billy Magnussen Guy Ritchie

Disney has been strongly criticised on social media for an act of whitewashing concerning its new live action re-make of Aladdin, apparently creating an entirely new role for a white actor.

The company is believed to have cast Billy Magnussen (Into The Woods, Bridge of Spies) as a character called Prince Anders, who does not feature in the 1992 animated Aladdin or the original folklore ‘Aladdin and the Magic Lamp’, for its upcoming live-action film.

The decision follows an existing outcry over the casting of Naomi Scott, a non-Arab actor of British and Indian heritage, as Princess Jasmine two months ago. She’ll star alongside Mena Massoud, who is of Egyptian background, as Aladdin himself, and Will Smith in the role of the Genie.

Birth Of The Dragon Trailer

Bruce Lee is an undying legend in both the film industry and the martial arts world. He is responsible for bringing Chinese martial arts and, indeed, films of the same theme to widespread Western popularity and is widely thought to be one of the greatest artists of all time. Born in both the year and the hour of the Dragon, his destiny was settled then and there in 1940. Born in San Francisco but raised in Hong Kong, Bruce spent much of his years learning to be a great fighter. Eventually, he moved back to America and opened a school to teach Westerners this ancient Chinese art, but not all his peers were happy about that. Allegedly, kung fu master Wong Jack Man wanted him to close his school down, and so Bruce challenged him to a fight in 1965 citing that if he won, he would be allowed to keep the school open - while if he lost, he'd honour the result and walk away from teaching.

Having been given multiple warnings, Gilly can't find a place that she fits in and is sent to a new home with the warning that if she doesn't make this foster home work, she'll be put into a teen centre by social services. However much attitude Gilly has, she knows that a teen facility is the last place she should be.

Gilly is welcomed by an older lady named Mrs Trotter who lets her into her home. Though Mrs Trotter is friendly and has dealt with many kids in the past, Gilly takes an instant dislike to the woman and her other foster child, William, who is far younger than Gilly.

Bridge Of Spies - He's A Spy Clip

Sometimes the law can get cause problems even for those who wrote them, particularly in the face of war. Thus, when an American spy plane is shot down while covertly photographing Russian bases, the thankfully unharmed pilot is held hostage by the foreign government. He'll only get to go home if America agrees to release their own spy, who's currently serving time in prison. Unfortunately, American law states that they can't just let a Russian spy go free without a proper appeal, and that's where James Donovan comes in. Donovan is a simple New York insurance lawyer not known for high-profile cases, but one thing he is is fair. He's asked to defend the spy and help organise the return of the American pilot, but that becomes a major sacrifice for the lawyer who now faces a struggle against some angry citizens who aren't going to let him forget it if they let the 'traitor' out of jail.

The Big Short Trailer

When Dr. Michael Burry discovered that the housing market in the US relied upon a series of bad loans in 2005, he knew there was profit to be had. He even went as far as moving on from his multi-million dollar Scion Capital LLC hedge fund in a bid to short the market and take advantage of the vulnerable housing deals. But he wasn't the only one with plans to accrue wealth off the back of financial disaster; Steve Eisman was a hedge fund manager who had a lot to say against the greedy banks, as did Cornwall Capital partner Ben Hockett and Deutsche Bank trader Greg Lippmann. These are financial outsiders that are about to show the banks a serious lesson when they use their economic skills to bring them down with a brave move in the credit default swap market.

Bridge Of Spies Trailer

It's the height of the Cold War and things are getting tense between Russia and America. An American U-2 spy plane has been shot down while photographing Russian bases, its pilot held captive. They're willing to release him, however, if only the American government send back an imprisoned spy of their own. However, by American law, that's virtually impossible - and that's where James Donovan comes in. An insurance lawyer who's never dealt with a case of such high stakes, he is enlisted by the CIA to defend the Russian spy in court in order to have him released and sent home without charge. It seems an impossible task when the whole of America are against setting him free and indeed even neighbours turn against Donovan, targeting his family as he tries to give one man a fair trial.

I Smile Back Trailer

Laney Brooks seems to be living the American Dream. A beautiful house with two gorgeous children inside and a supportive husband who'll do anything for her. But even this isn't enough to fade the black cloud that continues to hang over her. She is powerless to her own erratic and uninhibited behaviour, losing herself to drug addiction, drinking away each night and spending the night with strangers on a regular basis. Even despite this, she's more scared than your average person might be of losing everything she has, but is reluctant to keep taking her medication and goes against her husband's insistence. She has more personal problems affecting her too, with her estranged father coming back into her life, but this is a demon that she has to battle alone - she just hopes she doesn't lose her family in the meantime.

Bridge Of Spies - International Trailer

James Donovan is a simple insurance lawyer from Brooklyn, New York whose cases have never evoked too much controversy. However, all that changes quickly when he is enlisted by the CIA to defend a Russian spy in an impossible mission to have him released from prison without charge and returned home. When an American spy plane pilot is shot down during a task of photographing Russian territory, he thankfully survives; however, the angry Russian government are not planning on handing him over too easily. The only problem is, the law is very much not on the side of the Russian spy and in order for their man to be flown home, the government have to find a loophole to release their own captive. Donovan believes everyone deserves a fair trial, but he's one of very few people who do and by putting his life on the line to help his country during the Cold War, he's risking his family too.

Bridge Of Spies - US Trailer

In 1960, the hard work of many good people was tested greatly. The height of the Cold War was set to see a series of peaceful negotiation between the Americans and Russians, but a week beforehand, everything changed. An American spy plane was shot down by Russian missiles, carrying pictures of various Russian air force bases. While the US government tried to deny the charges, the Russians were able to provide the pictures, the airplane wreckage, and the pilot - miraculously unharmed. In exchange for his return, they wanted one of their captured spies to be returned. James B. Donovan (Tom Hanks), a simple lawyer, was tasked with creating a case to allow the US government to release the Soviet spy without jail time - a request that seemed almost impossible in the face of Cold War prejudice.

Into The Woods Review

Excellent

It's taken a long time for this stage musical to make it to the big screen, and while director Rob Marshall once again fails to give the story a sharp focus (see also Chicago and Nine), he at least lets the music and characters shine. Originally staged on Broadway in 1987, this musical by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine is a gleeful mash-up of fairy tales that continues on past the "happily ever after", eventually turning rather dark and emotional.

Once upon a time, there was a Baker and his Wife (James Corden and Emily Blunt) who learn that they can't have children because the Witch (Meryl Streep) next door has cursed them. She offers to break the spell if they collect a cow, a cape, a slipper and a lock of hair. Meanwhile, Jack (Daniel Huttlestone) annoys his mother (Tracey Ullman) by selling the family cow for a handful of "magic" beans; Red Riding Hood (Lilla Crawford) dodges a leery Wolf (Johnny Depp) following her through the woods; Cinderella (Anna Kendrick) sneaks to the festival to meet the Prince (Chris Pine) against the wishes of her nasty stepmum (Christine Baranski); and Rapunzel (Mackenzie Mauzy) defies her mother by letting her hair down for a Prince (Billy Magnussen). After knotting together, each plot strand resolves happily. Until the next day.

This is very much a story of two halves, with the sharp, snappy, hilarious first act contrasting strongly against the rather disturbingly grim and grisly second act, as everyone's story unravels to reveal each character's deep neediness. What makes this show so clever is the way it undermines the usual fairy-tale happiness of most stories, cautioning that this artifice is actually a problem for children. While the songs are all clever and thoroughly engaging, none of them is particularly hummable on first listen, but each is packed with witty wordplay and serious subtext that gets under the skin.
