Is Bob Dylan Trying To Reject His Nobel Prize?

Bob Dylan

Apparently people have been making Bob Dylan feel so bad about winning the Nobel Literature Prize this month that he has felt the need to remove any mention of it from his website. No wonder he hasn't been in contact with the Nobel committee just yet.

In a piece plugging his latest book of lyrics, 'The Lyrics: 1961-2012', the legendary songwriter was referred to as 'winner of the Nobel prize in literature'. Which he is. Unfortunately, it encouraged sceptics everywhere to continue their tirade against him and vociferate their opinions on why he's unworthy to be named a Nobel laureate.

“Right now we are doing nothing. I have called and sent e-mails to his closest collaborator and received very friendly replies. For now, that is certainly enough,” Danius confirmed.

Bob Dylan Wins The 2016 Nobel Prize For Literature

Bob Dylan

Legendary singer and songwriter Bob Dylan has been awarded the 2016 Nobel Prize for literature, for what the award’s judges describes as “having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition” over his entire body of work.

In doing so, Dylan became the first songwriter to receive the hugely prestigious award from the Swedish judging panel. It was a decision that left many prize-watchers surprised but mostly in agreement that it was appropriate.

His name had been raised on a number of occasions over the last couple of decades, but was never really thought of as a serious contender.

Imagine if you turned on your TV one day and found that, not only was Bob Dylan's timeless 'Like A Rolling Stone' the only thing that was coming out of the speakers, but everyone who appeared on screen was lip-syncing the lyrics to the 1965 track. It would be pretty weird to say the least. This is exactly what happens in the all new interactive video for the Dylan track, which went viral earlier this week.

Bob Dylan Announces Several UK Tour Dates In November

Bob Dylan

Bob Dylan will be returning to the UK this autumn. The 'Like A Rolling Stone' rocker has announced nine tour dates across Britain, following his continental European tour.

This is still part of Dylan’s 'Never Ending Tour' tour, which technically began in 1988 and, as of this year, includes over 2500 tour dates. Yes, the legendary singer-songwriter has his own way of doing things, but then nobody can argue against it? His European destinations so far include Stockholm, Copenhagen, Amsterdam and Berlin, among others, while in the UK he has scheduled shows in Glasgow, Blackpool and finally three London dates between the 26th and 28th of November. The full tour schedule is available on Dylan’s official website.

The setlist for Dylan’s tour dates changes from night to night, but he will be performing songs off his latest album, Tempest, which was released in 2012, as well as reprising a lot of his classic hits like 'The Times They Are a’Changin’' and 'John Wesley Harding' and a wealth of other classics by the crooner.

Bob Dylan To Be Awarded France's Highest Honour, The Legion D'Honneur

Bob Dylan

Bob Dylan looks set to be awarded the Legion d'Honneur, the highest award offered by the French people, with the singer officially added to the final list of nominees to be handed the award. The award will be the one billionth award of his illustrious career (we think), and fitting decoration for one of music's most influential personalities.

Grand Chancellor Jean-Louis Georgelin told French daily Le Monde that Dylan had been officially selected for the award on Sunday (June 2), although he went to mention that the nomination had previously been thrown out because of an unspecified "controversy" among the council members. It is believed that his open drug use and stern opposition to the Vietnam War may have cost him the vote, however the council had a change of heart and decided o put the 'Blowing in the Wind' singer up for the top honour.

Georgelin described Dylan as an "exceptional artist" known throughout the world as a "tremendous singer and great poet," and would be a fitting honouree. In spite of the 'controversy' surrounding his vote, Dylan now looks like the front runner for the award and will join the lives of Michael Schumacher, Ralph Lauren and J. K. Rowling as one of the many foreign, non-military affiliated honourees.

Bob Dylan Could Potentially Be Awarded France's Highest Honour; The Legion D'Honneur

Bob Dylan

Legendary singer/songwriter Bob Dylan might have another award to put on the mantlepiece soon, as the counter-culture extraordinaire is said to be in contention to be awarded France's highest honour; the Legion d'Honneur. His decoration has apparently been approved by the Legion d'Honneur's council and is now among a list of nominees up for the prestigious award.

There was controversy surrounding Dylan's selection, with his marijuana use and opposition to the Vietnam War being the key factors in any deliberation behind the decision. The committee's grand chancellor, Jean-Louis Georgelin, admitted in French newspaper Le Monde that he had initially turned down the nomination, citing an unspecified or elaborated on "controversy" as being the would-be factor that prevented him considering Dylan, however his head has apparently been turned and Dylan now stands a good chance of being handed the award.

In an open letter published in Le Monde on Sunday (June 2), Georgelin demonstrated his change of heart by calling the folk legend an "exceptional artist" known in his native United States and across the globe as a "tremendous singer and great poet," fonly briefly alluding to any 'controversies.' The satirical Le Canard Enchaine had brought Dylan's omission to the fore last week, accusing Georgelin of throwing out the nomination because of Dylans's pot use and stern opposition to the Vietnam War.

Bob Dylan Announces Tour With My Morning Jacket And Wilco - Is It His Last One?

Bob Dylan

Fans of Americana rejoice! Three – well probably more like two – generations of the genre’s artists are set to tour the US this summer, with the legendary Bob Dylan being joined by the critically acclaimed My Morning Jacket and Wilco for a run of shows that’ll stretch from the end of June to the beginning of August.

The news was announced on the official website of Bob Dylan, with the tour being billed as the Americanarama Festival of Music.' It’s possible that there may well be more additions to the line-up, or perhaps local acts playing at each of the respective dates, with the poster promising more to be announced. Two who already have been confirmed are the Richard Thompson Electric Trio and Ryan Bingham. Thompson of course made his name as part of seminal folk group Fairport Convention.

As Billboard points out, Dylan is currently on a spring tour to support his latest album Tempest, which debuted at number three on the Billboard album charts last September; for a man who isn’t getting any younger it’s impressive the workload that the 71 year-old has taken on, though it could be argued that the amount of shows the folk star is playing could well mean he’s approaching his farewell and looking to get as much in as possible before retirement. The Summer tour will start on June 26th at West Palm Beach, Florida, calling in at 26 different shows and finishing at Mountain View.

Bob Dylan Sizing Up Huge Concert In...Swansea?

Bob Dylan

Bob Dylan is likely to play a concert in Swansea, Wales, as part of a celebration to mark the centenary of the birth of poet Dylan Thomas. The legendary songwriter is said to have named himself after the Welsh writer - something essentially confirmed by reports that Dylan is thinking "very positively about the idea."

Geraint Davis, the member of parliament for West Swansea, told the BBC that he has asked Dylan if he would perform in the city as part of a commemorative event next year. "Bob Dylan named himself after Dylan Thomas. I have asked Bob Dylan whether he would be prepared to give a centenary concert in Swansea, in order that he could blend his music with Dylan Thomas's poetry," the MP said in the British parliament on Thursday (January 17, 2013). David says Sony Music replied to his query, saying Dylan likes the idea and is considering the proposal. The 71-year-old was born Robert Allen Zimmerman, though the reason for his name change has long been debated by fans. The most popular theory is that he did indeed name himself after Thomas, whose works include Under Milk Wood and Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night.

Bob Dylan still tours worldwide and released his latest critically acclaimed album Tempest in September 2012.

Mick Jaggers' Love Letters Prove A Valuable Asset For His Secret Girl

Mick Jagger Rolling Stones Beatles James Brown Bob Dylan

Rock and Roll Icon Mick Jagger wrote a bunch of love letters back in the 60's, and, with The Rolling Stones recent, and very well publicized tour, they've fetched a whopping £187,250.

Written in Australia, while Jagger was out there filming for Ned Kelly, and letters represent a poetic, 25-year-old rockstar, just about to enter his prime. "I put these letters in a bank 30 years ago thinking that our daughter would find them valuable as an adult," Marsha Hunt - the object of Jagger's then desires - told the BBC. "Who could have anticipated that rock 'n roll would remain so popular, that 30 years on this band would still be performing?" The letters were mooted to earn something between #70,000 - £100,000, so their final value of £180,000 has proved a real surprise. They were no doubt boosted, though, by the recent renaissance of the aging rockers, as they headline four sold out, and very expensive, shows in London and New York.

Mumford And Sons Claims Bob Dylan Was Unauthentic

Mumford And Sons Bob Dylan

UK folk-popsters Mumford And Sons have hit out at claims that they are an unauthentic package during an interview with The Guardian, claiming that Bob Dylan - a supposed influence on the band - was as 'unauthentic' as they come.

Despite being the voice of numerous generations and possessing more storytelling and songwriting ability in his little finger than the whole of Mumford and Sons, that didn't stop frontman Marcus Mumford said, "Not since I came to the realization that Dylan, who's probably my favorite artist ever, the richest artist for me, didn't give a sh*t about authenticity... [He] lied to everyone about who he was."

Mumford and Sons, known for making songs of the same quality, and same sound, with the same lyrics and chord progression over and over, have also shot down claims that they are not a religious band either, despite their spiritual lyrics and Christian background. Bass player Ted Dwane said, "We're not all religious. In fact none of us are, really. We, er, we have a full spectrum of beliefs."

Infinitum Nihil: Johnny Depp Announces Launch Of New Publishing Imprint

Johnny Depp Bob Dylan Woody Guthrie

Johnny Depp has announced that he is to launch a new publishing imprint, named Infinitum Nihil (which translates as ‘nothing is forever’). Depp’s latest venture will be housed by Harper Collins, the publishing giant and the Lone Ranger star already has two books in the pipeline: a Bob Dylan biography and a recently discovered Woody Guthrie novel.

It’s the perfect venture for Depp, who has set himself out as something of a rarity in Hollywood, carving a niche in Tinseltown’s intelligentsia; a successful, blockbuster movie actor with a cultured side, who has managed to shake off the seedier drug associations of his earlier career.

The Bob Dylan biography will be entitled The Unraveled Tales of Bob Dylan and according to The Washington Post, the book aims to “set the record straight on the songwriter’s enigmatic life and career and will be based in part on interviews with Dylan by best-selling historian Douglas Brinkley.” The Woody Guthrie book will also involve both Dylan and Brinkley, who will act as editors on Guthrie’s 1947 novel The House of Earth. The publication of the Guthrie novel is scheduled for January 2013, whilst the Dylan book will not be expected until 2015.

Jay-Z Cuts The Ribbon At Barclays Centre Opening

Jay Z Bob Dylan Barbra Streisand

Rapper Jay Z kicked into life the latest concert venue in Brooklyn, New York; the massive, rust-coloured Barclays Centre, taking to the stage for the venue's inaugural night.

Jay, himself a Brooklyn native, wore his heritage on his sleeve during the performance, proudly telling the crowd before his set started, "tonight is a celebration of the borough where I'm from. Welcome to my house."

The concert venue already has such stars as Bob Dylan and Barbara Streisand lined up to perform in the coming month, however not everyone is happy to see the new venue open up it's doors. The powers behind the new venue have hailed the venue as a chance to regenerate the dilapidated part of downtown Brooklyn, as well as offering a home for NBA team the Brooklyn Nets, the first sports team to represent the New York borough since 1957. However critics of the venue, who have been in protest of the venue since before construction began, believe that the new stadium will destroy the distinctive local community.

Bob Dylan Beaten To Billboard No.1 Spot By The Dave Matthews Band

The Dave Matthews Band Bob Dylan The XX Little Big Town

Bob Dylan’s Tempest could only manage No.3 on The Billboard 200 Chart this week, with The Dave Matthews Band claiming the top spot.

Their album, Away from the World moved 266,000 copies, making it their sixth consecutive album in a row to take the top spot, and they are the only group to have done that according to Billboard. Their previous Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King bowed with 424,000 copies in 2009. Clambering the peak of the Billboard charts, and planting your flag in first (for the week, anyway) is a great achievement for any band, but beating the musical legend that is Bob Dylan on your way there makes it even more special, even if the aging star is considered a little old for mountaineering. Ol’ Dylan comes in at No. 3 with 110,000 album sales, but it is his fifth consecutive top-10 studio album, which is a commendable feat in itself.

Elsewhere, Little Big Town's Tornado came in 2nd for the week, with 113,000, giving the country quartet their highest charting album ever. The Avett Brothers also grab their best week ever on the Billboard 200 as The Carpenter sells 98,000, putting them at No. 4. The XX’s previous best entry was No.92, but they blew that into smithereens with a No.5 position this week; their new album Coexist selling 73,000 copies.

Bob Dylan Labels Plagirism Critics ‘Wussies And Pussies’.

Bob Dylan Joni Mitchell

“Wussies and pussies.” That’s the term Bob Dylan used to describe his critics, specifically those who accused the veteran singer-songwriter of plagiarizing some of his song lyrics. In a new interview with Rolling Stone magazine, the 71-year-old was asked what he thought of the controversy surrounding his writing sharing similarities to the works of Japanese author Junichi Saga and poet Henry Timrod.

Dylan – who has just released his 35th studio album to near universal critical acclaim – said, “Oh, yeah, in folk and jazz, quotation is a rich and enriching tradition…That certainly is true. It's true for everybody, but me. There are different rules for me. And as far as Henry Timrod is concerned, have you even heard of him? Who's been reading him lately?” Timrod – who died in 1867 – was dubbed the poet laureate of the Confederacy though failed to find any real commercial success. Referring to the New York Times’ article about the similarities of his and poet’s work, Dylan said, “Wussies and pussies complain about that stuff. It's an old thing - it's part of the tradition. It goes way back.” In 2003, the Wall Street Journal noted that lyrics from Dylan’s 2001 record ‘Love and Theft’ included phrases similar to those found in the 1995 biography of a Japanese mobster. A line from the book read, “I'm not as cool or forgiving as I might have sounded,” while Dylan wrote and sang, “I'm not quite as cool or forgiving as I sound.” On this specific example, the singer-songwriter explained, “I'm working within my art form. It's that simple. I work within the rules and limitations of it. There are authoritarian figures that can explain that kind of art form better to you than I can. It's called songwriting.” Of course, accusations of plagiarism in the music world are nothing new, nor are they for Dylan, who was the target of an interview by Joni Mitchell in 2010. She told the Los Angeles Times, “Bob [Dylan] is not authentic at all…He's a plagiarist, and his name and voice are fake. Everything about Bob is a deception. We are like night and day, he and I.”

Nevertheless, the 71-year-old Dylan remains on good form and has released three albums in as many years. Uncut magazine describes his latest – Tempest - as, “the most far-reaching, provocative and transfixing album of Dylan's later career.”

Foul-mouthed Rant Alert: Bob Dylan Versus The Critics

Bob Dylan

“All those evil mother******s can rot in hell.” Harsh words there from Bob Dylan; a message to his critics, both present and past and in particular, a reference to those that labelled him ‘Judas’ when he dared to use an electric guitar. It was a move that many saw as the troubadour betraying the roots of the folk tradition through which he had made his name. Looking back, though, Dylan remains angry that his detractors felt it necessary to compare the plugging in of the electric guitar to the betrayal of Jesus Christ.

“Wussies and pussies complain about that stuff,” says Dylan in an interview with Rolling Stone magazine. It's an old thing – it's part of the tradition. These are the same people that tried to pin the name Judas on me. Judas, the most hated name in human history! Yeah, and for what? For playing an electric guitar? As if that is in some kind of way equitable to betraying our Lord and delivering him up to be crucified.” Dylan also had a word to say to those who criticize him for employing other writers’ work in his lyrical content. “Oh, yeah, in folk and jazz, quotation is a rich and enriching tradition. That certainly is true. It's true for everybody, but me. There are different rules for me.”

The Other Side Of The Mirror: Bob Dylan Live At The Newport Folk Festival Review

Essential
Lerner, utilizing footage shot for his folk festival documentaries, presents Dylan in context with full performances from each of his festival appearances in 1963 to 65, in one of the great rock performance films, The Other Side of the Mirror: Bob Dylan Live at the Newport Folk Festival, 1963-65.

Lerner's film is a no-frills document of Dylan in full performance, chronicling a tale of an artist growing up and away from his folk base, leaving the idealistic folkies in the dust. It also charts an odyssey from songs of innocence to songs of experience.

Masked & Anonymous Review

Bad
Masked & Anonymous, as a title, comes across as a vague, artsy moniker as inaccessible as the film it represents. But look closer at the name of this movie about revolution and despair, and you'll discover a clear reference to the film's writers; credited as Rene Fontaine and Sergei Petrov, the screenwriters have been unmasked, as it were, revealed to be the film's iconic star, Bob Dylan, and director Larry Charles (HBO's Curb Your Enthusiasm).

The result of this combination is an overly ambitious film that's as muddled and cryptic as a mumble-filled Dylan vocal. Dylan stars as the symbolically named Jack Fate, an apparent musical legend, jailed in the midst of a brutally downtrodden America where the government has taken over, war is rampant, and even the counter-revolutionaries have counter-revolutionaries.

The Last Waltz Review

Extraordinary
The Band were one of the best rock groups of the '60s and '70s, creating a unique brand of music that incorporated elements of folk, blues, and soul -- ironically, at the time when those elements were being squeezed out of rock by groups such as Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd.

Unfortunately, the Band's music didn't have much influence on the way future music would develop.
