Bono Says Amy Schumer's Got The Power To Defeat ISIS

Bono Amy Schumer

Bono has decided that the best way to cripple ISIS and counter terrorism is by making them laugh. In his mind, violence doesn't work because it's all they understand, so why not introduce them to a concept they've never heard of before? Which is comedy. Apparently.

BonoBono knows how he would defeat ISIS...

Yeah, we don't think the U2 frontman is going to be running for president any time soon, even if we overlook that's he's not American. It's like showing up to debate class, realising you haven't prepared at all and just rattling off the first idea you can think of. Regardless of how stupid it is. The only problem is, Bono is 'actually serious'.

In an interview with Billboard, he explained the reason behind the decision: "We always wanted our music to be heard, and the idea that we could have worked for years and years [on] what we think are the most personal songs that we have ever written - and you have to become very raw to write like that - only then for them maybe not to be heard was terrifying.”

The apology was prompted by a criticism from a Facebook user during a question and answer session. “Oops, I’m sorry about that,” said Bono. “I had this beautiful idea and we kind of got carried away with ourselves. Artists are prone to that kind of thing. Drop of megalomania, touch of generosity, dash of self-promotion and deep fear that these songs that we poured our life into over the last few years mightn’t be heard.”

After Three Years Of "Meh" 'Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark' Musical Is Off Broadway

Bono Andrew Garfield

Whoever thought doing a Spider-Man musical was a good idea shouldn’t be allowed to write things down, because it wasn’t, and after a huge waste of time, money and effort, Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark has officially been removed from Broadway and shipped out to Vegas. The whole thing has been a nightmare, with major injuries and huge, high-profile legal cases blighting the musical’s progress.

The thing cost $75m to create (making it the most expensive musical ever), and while the show has grossed $203m, the high - $1m-per-week! - running costs have rendered it a financial disaster. Producer Jeremiah J Harris thinks a reconfigured version of the show will prosper in a different city, according to The New York Times.

"We could run for probably another three to five years being stuck in the middle. We think it will play Las Vegas with a greater bang than it did in New York,” explained Harris. “Economically we have a greater opportunity in the Las Vegas market," added the producer, who said the show would return in 2015.

'Spiderman: Turn Off The Dark' Coming To An End On Broadway & Moving To Las Vegas

Spider Man Bono

Spiderman: Turn Off The Dark was a relatively popular stage show throughout its two year run on Broadway, yet despite regular ticket sales and generally positive reviews, the Spiderman musical struggled to meet its huge budget every night and there were regular reports of infighting coming from the set. Producers have decided to cut their loses with the beleaguered stage production, and will relaunch the show in Las Vegas for 2015, a producer for the show told the Wall Street Journal.

Spidermen
The Spidey stage show has remained popular, but not popular enough

With a total cost of $75 million throughout its two plus years on the stage, the production regularly failed to break even, particularly so in more recent weeks. Last week alone, the stage production only managed to gross $742,595 from a potential gross of more than $1.5 million. This kind of disappointing display has been plaguing the production for some time now, and producers seem ready at last to cut their loses in the Big Apple and try out another city.

Muscle Shoals - International Trailer

When Rick Hall opened up his record studio FAME Studios in the small town of Muscle Shoals, Alabama, it became something of a rock 'n' roll myth when some of the finest music ever written began to pour out of it. Hits from the likes of Aretha Franklin, Etta James, Percy Sledge, Wilson Pickett and Otis Redding became international, and Hall even managed blur the distinction between white and black a little as his all-white session group, The Swampers, became deeply respected among the funk and soul artists. After the session group separated themselves from Hall, some of them set up their own studio, the Muscle Shoals Sound Studio, and became the Muscle Shoals Sound Rhythm Section. From here, musicians began to shine their brightest as The Rolling Stones, Elton John, Willie Nelson, Paul Simon and Bob Dylan all left that town as legends as if enchanted by the beauty of Muscle Shoals.

Muscle Shoals was just a town in Alabama with an extraordinary habit of producing some of the finest music in the world. It started out with Rick Hall and his FAME Studios, producing hits from the likes of Percy Sledge, Wilson Pickett, Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding and Etta James. And not only that, even at the heart of racial distinction in America, he found the ability to join both black and white in unity over the love of soul music. Even after Hall's session group split up, some of them went to name themselves The Swampers, later becoming known as the Muscle Shoals Sound Rhythm Section when they opened the Muscle Shoals Sound Studio. From here came legendary tunes from The Rolling Stones, Elton John, Willie Nelson, Paul Simon and Bob Dylan. So just what was it that made Muscle Shoals the must-be place for artist in the seventies?

We've all had that moment; looking at photos of our favourite celebs and then jumping out of our seats screaming, 'He's HOW old?!' Well, we've been doing a lot of that here at ContactMusic. Some stars seem to have crept up the age ladder pretty sneakily, the odd wrinkle and grey hair barely registering on our radar, while others don't seem to have aged at all! English football player David Beckham was in his twenties when he rose to global popularity and, looking at his recent H&M underwear advert, it seems that his iconic hairstyles and tattoos are our only way of working out the old from the newer pictures of him. However, he is only 37 and has plenty of time to catch up yet. It's the over-50s that have really had our mouths agape in recent times as we've been scouring the net for the most youthful looking middle to old aged stars.

The band also recorded a cover of punk anthem THE SAINTS ARE COMING with Green Day to help those affected by Hurricane Katrina in the US. Bono is currently in talks to appear as a special guest at the inaugural Make Poverty History concert in Melbourne, Australia on 17 November (06). The band's tour kicks off in Brisbane on Monday night (06NOV06).

Bukowski: Born Into This Review

Good
Poet and novelist Charles Bukowski was a howling drunk, an unapologetic womanizer, and a smoking, gambling foul-mouthed literary sensation. He haunted barrooms and horse tracks. He brawled and hired prostitutes. He hung out with celebrities and is revered by legions of readers. No doubt his life contains all the stuff of a fascinating documentary -- only Bukowski: Born into This isn't it.

For a movie about a wild man, Born into This is awfully tame. Director John Dullaghan does a commendable job of chronicling his subject's life, using Bukowski's various novels and poems as portals into his life experiences, but Dullaghan never challenges the audience to determine exactly what to make of Bukowski, either as a human or as a writer. Was he a misogynist or a sage? Is it possible to be both? What is his literary legacy? Why don't universities typically teach Bukowski? Do English professors know something the rest of us don't?
