As 2013 moves closer to the Oscar bait months, Sony has released the first trailer for its secret weapon, David O'Russell's American Hustle, with Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence and Christian Bale.

It boasts a cast of Academy favorites and the movie has been talked up since 2012, though will it deliver?

The movie is based on the true story of a brilliant con artist (Bale) named Irving Rosenfeld and his partner Sydney Prosser (Amy Adams) who team up with an FBI agent (Cooper) to take down corrupt politicians and criminals in 1970s New Jersey.

Jeremy Renner plays the passionate politician caught between the con-artists and the feds.

The trailer doesn't give too much away as to specific plotlines, though American Hustle is clearly going to more Blow than Argo. The soundtrack provided by Led Zeppelin's Good Times Bad Times sets the tone for a story of crime, excess and sex.

It's difficult to pick out any potential stand out performances, though if we were guessing, we'd tip Amy Adams for another best supporting actress nod.

It opens on limited release on December 13, before hitting theaters nationwide on Christmas Day. It remains the 9/1 fourth favorite to win Best Picture at the Oscars, with another Sony offering, The Monuments Men, the market leader.

Elsewhere, August: Osage County, Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom, Captain Phillips, Twelve Years a Slave and Wolf of Wall Street should all compete in what's shaping up to be a rich fall for movies.
