Captain Marvel is coming! And guess who's the frontrunner to portray this all powerful hero: Brie Larson. In probably one of the greatest casting choices ever made in a comic book film franchise. It's worth noting that we're talking Marvel's Captain Marvel not DC's, though that's not a bad idea either.

Brie LarsonBrie Larson to play Captain Marvel?

The 'Room' actress may be getting the role of Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel in Marvel's first ever stand-alone heroine movie, competing against DC's 'Wonder Woman' starring Gal Gadot. According to Variety, she is the first choice for the role and, apparently, she's interested.

The director for the upcoming film is also unconfirmed, though there are rumours that Angelina Jolie may be tipped for the helm. The screenplay, meanwhile, is being writting by 'Guardians of the Galaxy' writer Nicole Perlman and Meg LeFauve of 'Inside Out'.

For anyone who doesn't know about Captain Marvel, she was originally an air force pilot named Carol Danvers, whose DNA merges with mutant genetics and subsequently gives her exceptional powers including super strength and flight. It's quite a culturally relevent film to bring in now, given that 'Captain' is still thought of as a male title and being a pilot is still considered a masculine occupation. Marvel are kicking down all the barriers that are left.

Marvel's Captain Marvel must not be confused with DC's character of the same name, who also goes by the alias Shazam. Shazam will be getting a movie of his own in 2019, however, though it is not known who will play him. Dwayne Johnson is expected to play the villain Black Adam.

Larson has a lot going on before the movie is due to arrive though. She's just completed work on two upcoming films; Ben Wheatley's gangster thriller 'Free Fire' and Dan Baron's musical 'Basmati Blues'; and she's now filming 'The Glass Castle' with Naomi Watts and Woody Harrelson. The 'King Kong' prequel in which she stars, 'Kong: Skull Island', is also in post-production.

'Captain Marvel' is expected to arrive in movie theatres in 2018.
