Larson will play Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel, in the studio’s first film with a female lead.
After months of rumours Marvel have confirmed that Oscar winner Brie Larson will star as Captain Marvel in the superhero’s first stand-alone movie, due for release in 2019. The announcement was made during Marvel's evening presentation at Comic-Con on Saturday, with the actress herself making an appearance.
After the announcement was made Larson shared a photo of herself wearing a Marvel Studios baseball cap with the caption, “Call me Captain Marvel.” She later added, “Thanks for the love! I'm so excited to be part of the team.”

Larson won her first best actress Oscar earlier this year for Room and she was also in attendance at Comic-Con to talk about Kong: Skull Island, which is currently in post-production. Captain Marvel will be Marvel studio’s first film to feature a female lead, follwoing DC's Wonder Woman movie.
Few details about the film have been revealed, but the script is currently being written by Guardians of the Galaxy's Nicole Perlman and Inside Out's Meg LeFauve, but at present there’s no director attached to the project.

Captain Marvel aka Carol Danvers was first known to comic book fans as Mrs Marvel, before the assuming the Captain Marvel mantle in 2012 in an ongoing series written by Kelly Sue DeConnick. Danvers begins life as a talented test pilot who gains powers, including super-strength and the ability to fly after being exposed to alien DNA following an accident.
