Bruce Springsteen Shouts Out Wrong State During Concert At Connecticut

Bruce Springsteen

Bruce Springsteen's latest concert, which lasted 3 ½ hours, nearly went without a hitch.

The 64 year-old musician was performing this past Saturday (May 17th) for a packed-out crowd at the Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Connecticut, for his High Hopes tour alongside the E Street Band.

But in an embossing moment for Springsteen, he accidently gave a shout out to a completely different state.

The night before had belonged to The Boss. Saturday night saw Springsteen take to the stage, opening with High Hopes, the eponymous track from his latest album. Unsurprisingly, he drew a huge audience who were blown away by his set, which featured performances of the usual tracks from his most recent tours.

The Queen of Gospel Mahalia Jackson appeared at the first event alongside renowned orchestral composer Duke Ellington, and from then on the festival has gone from strength to strength and has never once lost the spirit that has made it so loved.

Why '20 Feet From Stardom' Deserved The Oscar For 'Best Documentary'

Darlene Love Rolling Stones Bruce Springsteen David Bowie

In the weeks leading up to the Oscars, pundits were divided about which documentary would win the big prize, most predicting The Act of Killing, the innovative, staggeringly powerful exploration of Indonesia's death squads. But anyone who had seen the background singer doc 20 Feet From Stardom knew it was probably more likely to take the award.

Not only is the film a hugely crowd-pleasing movie that leaves audiences smiling and tapping their toes in joy, but it has serious subtext as well, examining America's civil rights struggle through the eyes of musical artists. It also makes a potent statement about today's digital, auto-tuned recording industry in which non-singers make records and do their own backing vocals, but neglect to infuse their records with the passion and energy that fills the classic songs of the past few decades.

20 Feet From Stardom Review

Extraordinary

Entertaining and uplifting, this Oscar-winning documentary tells the unknown story of the back-up singers who made classic records so memorable. Packed with lively, engaging people and fantastic music, the film also offers a sharp look at the music industry over the past 60 years in parallel with the fight for civil rights in America.

In the 1950s, background singers were usually white girls who read sheet-music perfectly. But they were quickly replaced with black artists who learned their craft in churches and could improvise harmonies with the lead singers. Suddenly, pop songs were infused with passion and life, as a handful of unknown singers performed backing vocals on virtually every classic hit since then. With their powerhouse voices and larger-than-life personalities, most have also tried to find success as solo artists. Others prefer to stay in the shadows.

For example, even though established stars acknowledge that she has more talent than any of them, Lisa Fischer prefers the quiet life out of the spotlight. Other belters like Merry Clayton, Tata Vega and Claudia Lennear can be heard on hundreds of timeless classics and are known throughout the industry, but never managed to get their solo careers off the ground. Judith Hill is a young artist who does soaring backing work while waiting for her own music to take off. And Darlene Love is the exception who managed both long background and solo careers.

Top Again! Bruce Springsteen's High Hopes Delivers 10th UK Number One

Bruce Springsteen

Bruce Springsteen certainly had 'High Hopes' for his eighteenth studio album, claiming on his website that it contains "the best of my writing". Springsteen will undoubtedly be delighted to find that his latest work has delivered him a tenth UK number one - propelling himself ahead of ABBA and Queen, and on par with U2 and Rolling Stones - as reported by The Official Charts Company.

High Hopes - officially penned in for a January 14th 2014 release - was accidentally leaked by retail giants Amazon late December. Though the error was sorted swiftly, the album had become available for download through various file sharing websites according to, Billboard.

Bruce Springsteen - High Hopes Album Review

It seems fitting that Bruce Springsteen has chosen to bookend his worldwide Wrecking Ball tour with another studio album. His eighteenth record 'High Hopes' picks up on many of the same themes of triumph over adversity as its predecessor. While it may lack the narrative cohesion of earlier releases, it acts as a companion piece and a meditation on his work over the last two decades. 'High Hopes'' genesis as a collection of reworked off cuts and covers shouldn't undermine its importance within the 64-year-old's back catalogue either. It features the final posthumous appearances of saxophonist Clarence Clemons and organist Danny Federici; two members of the E Street Band who have received touching tributes during recent live sets.

Bruce Springsteen - High Hopes Album Review

Springsteen describes the twelve tracks found on 'High Hopes' in an affectionate way: "I felt they all deserved a home and a hearing." To be honest, I'm not going to disagree with that sentiment. There is value to what's here and the fact that it doesn't quite overcome its patchwork quilt nature as a compilation of songs written over a long period and recorded with varying musicians around the world just adds to the charm. The revolving cast includes contributions from members of his current touring band, the core E Street Band members, his children and, most notably, Rage Against The Machine's Tom Morello who filled in for Steven Van Zandt during last year's Australian shows. Springsteen was already putting together a record of lost gems, but it seems Morello added a spark to the project to make it more than just a curio. Indeed, Morello suggested dusting off the title track which had only seen the light of day on a promotional EP back in the '90s. This time round though, when Springsteen sings, "I want to have a wife, I want to have some kids, I want to look in their eyes and know they stand a chance", there's a sense he's making a rallying cry against the financial hardships facing middle America. Elevated from a simple gospel style jam, Morello injects a razor sharp edge with his guitar that breathes new life into 'High Hopes'.

His other major contribution here is the electric reworking of the previously quiet and unassuming 'The Ghost of Tom Joad'. While the song has been transformed on the road in the past, this is a rare example of a studio recording with a shared lead vocal. Again, Morello's guitar makes the song feel more contemporary and defiant revealing its thematic similarity to 'High Hopes'. It's also interesting to see the most impressive solo on the whole record featured on a track that is essentially a folk song. However, Springsteen succeeds in his endeavours even when Morello isn't in the spotlight. 'American Skin (41 shots)' which has been sitting in the vaults for years is a timely criticism of US gun laws, following the Trayvon Martin case. Even 'The Wall', which deals specifically with a soldier that didn't return from Vietnam, taps into a sense of loss renewed by more recent conflicts.

Said to date from 1974, a year before the song and album Born to Run was released, the manuscript contains 30 lines of lyrics, complete with annotations in the margins and over some of the original lyrics.

Springsteen Gives Trayvon Martin "41 Shots" Salute During Concert In Ireland

Bruce Springsteen is the latest entertainer to join in the backlash following George Zimmerman’s acquittal for the shooting of Trayvon Martin. During a concert in Limerick, Ireland, on Tuesday night, The Boss included a rendition of American Skin (41 Shots) into the setlist, after seeing a sign in the crowd, requesting the song earlier in the evening. According to The Star Ledger, the singer had an impassioned interaction with the fan, who had originally brought the sign.

Bruce Springsteen played his first show at London's Wembley Stadium over the weekend, pumping out the hits to some 71,000 fans. It was stunning turn out for the now 63-year-old rocker, who still comfortably commands such crowds while putting on quite the show too - as if to ensure everyone get their money worth. Though the fiery Badlands, iconic Thunder Road and timeless Dancing in the Dark were the highlights, Springsteen pulled out the rarity Save My Love and Rosalita (Come Out Tonight), which he performs only sparingly nowadays.

Glowing reviews littered the British press on Monday morning (June 17, 2013), with The Independent writing of Springsteen's showmanship, "An entertainer to the last, "Dancing in the Dark" sees Springsteen invite two women up onto the stage (the latter of whom's child appeared to be waving a sign reading 'dance with my mum for a dollar'), and he achieves that rare thing of making such banter funny and touching."

Critic Michael Hann of The Guardian gave the performance the maximum five stars, writing, "Maybe one could say it's routine, just showmanship, but the eternal miracle of Springsteen is that he never appears to be faking it for the audience's benefit. It's almost commonplace to say a Springsteen show is another triumph, but - really - he just keeps getting better and better."

Waiting On A Sunny Day: Young Fan Joins Bruce Springsteen Onstage In Brisbane

Bruce Springsteen

A young Bruce Springsteen fanatic, dressed up to mimic The Boss’ look on the cover of the Born in the USA album was rewarded for his efforts by being invited to join Bruce onstage for a rendition of his song ‘Waiting On A Sunny Day.’ The 11 year-old was wearing blue jeans, a white shirt and even had a red cap tucked into his back pocket, to complete the look, at Bruce’s second concert in Brisbane, Australia. It’s part of Springsteen’s first tour there in 10 years, Sky News reports.

After belting out a decent version of the song, he was treated even further, when Bruce walked him to the back of the stage, dusted his knees down with a cloth and then walked him to one end of the stage and invited him to do a stage slide with him. The young fan eagerly obliged. Who wouldn’t, give the opportunity to indulge in a little rock posturing, with an idol?

Albums of Note... David Bowie’s return to the shelves of our local record shops (well, the few that still exist) has been met with a grateful and adulatory fanfare, across the board and it’s been no different here at Contactmusic. Having run out of contemporary influences upon which to draw, Bowie took the old adage that pop will eat itself and made an album to fit. On The Next Day, Bowie largely references himself and his own body of work, recalling his Berlin days, as well as providing an extension of the tracks he released in the nineties.“Assessing how The Next Day sits alongside anything else he's done is irrelevant; an artist who has gone through as many character changes, taken on as many styles and moved through as many eras as he has defies such lazy list making. What can be said is that it is, at this point in time, at this point in his life and career, probably as good a record that David Bowie could've possibly come up with.”

Some of the mystery of Rhye’s cloaked existence has been unveiled and the band’s two components have been revealed as Toronto born producer Mike Milosh and Robin Hannibal of Quadron. They draw comparisons to The XX, partly thanks for Milosh’s falsetto, which led many to believe that it was a woman on vocals. Possibly part of the reason they choose to entitle the album Woman...? “'Woman' is a chilled, tranquil listen but not a boring album by any means. The duo creates songs that fill with distant, mysterious moods. But, it still feels like an intimate album piled high with textured layers.”

Bruce Springsteen Hard Rock Calling

Remember last summer, when hordes of Boss fans booed and jeered as the almighty Bruce Springsteen and his E Street Band were cut short during one of their typically marathon sets at London’s Hyde Park? That concert was actually part of the death knell for the area as an outdoor gig venue, but for Springsteen fans they’ve been more concerned about whether he’ll get to finish what he’d started last year.

Well the good news is that Hard Rock Calling, who put him on during last year’s ill-fated set, have moved to get the Boss back as a headliner for this year’s event! With added good news that they’ve moved from Hyde Park to the Olympic Stadium, meaning there shouldn’t be any curfew issues should Bruce decide to do what he’d planned on last year, and bring Beatle Paul McCartney on for an elongated finale. "This summer, we are giving Bruce and the band the opportunity to finish what they started and make history again," said Hard Rock International CEO Hamish Dodds in a media release, reports USA Today.

Davis reflects on his first sexual encounter with a man during "the era of Studio 54," writing, "On this night, after imbibing enough alcohol, I was open to responding to his sexual overtures. Was I nervous? Absolutely. Did the heavens open up? No. But it was satisfying." Afterwards, Davis writes that he went through a period of "soul searching and self-analysis," saying, "I didn't feel as if I had found, or was even searching for, my true self. I had not been at all repressed or confused during either of my marriages."

Davis separated from his second wife several years later and entered into a "monogamous relationship," with a male doctor, who is not named in the book. That relationship ended in 2004, though the mogul notes he has been in a relationship with another man ever since. The book - a sequel to his now out-of -print 1975 memoir Clive: Inside the Record Business - is devoted to his interactions with some of the world's biggest artists over the years. Interestingly, he recalls a particualr conversation with Bruce Springsteen's manager at the time Mike Appell, suggesting that Greetings From Asbury Park, N.J needed a couple more radio friendly songs. Springsteen subsequently wrote 'Blinded By The Light' and 'Sprit In The Night.'
