Altman Review

Excellent

This isn't a tell-all doc about the iconic filmmaker: it's a love letter from his friends and family. With a terrific range of film clips, home movies, behind-the-scenes footage and never-seen stills, this movie explores how Robert Altman's work has forever changed the way Hollywood makes movies, simply because his inventive filmmaking style forced everyone else to try and keep up.

After getting his start directing industrial films in Kansas City, Altman made the jump to Hollywood in the late 1950s, annoying a range of studio executives with his preference for naturalistic, overlapping dialogue in television programmes. Then he made the jump to cinema and took the world by storm with M.A.S.H. In 1970, winning the Palme d'Or at Cannes and introducing the "Altmanesque" combination of earthy interaction, ensemble casts and political subtext. In his documentary, filmmaker Ron Mann cleverly asks many of Altman's actors to define the word Altmanesque, not as it relates to the movies but as it relates to the man himself.

Altman was a rare filmmaker who was loved by his casts and crews as well as the critics. Notoriously picky film journalist Pauline Kael famously wrote that "he can make film fireworks out of next to nothing", and this documentary demonstrates this with clips and backstage moments from his classics, ranging from McCabe and Mrs. Miller (1971), Buffalo Bill and the Indians (1976) and Popeye (1980) to The Player (1992), Short Cuts (1993) and Gosford Park (2001). The film's focus is on his movies, although it's narrated through personal interviews with Altman and his widow Kathryn Reed and features some superb footage of his sons. It also traces his ongoing health issues, from his heart transplant to his death from leukaemia in 2006. But there's little mention of his lifelong anti-war efforts or his controversial efforts to legalise marijuana.

Woody Allen Casts Kristen Stewart, Bruce Willis In New Film

Kristen Stewart Woody Allen Bruce Willis

Woody Allen has cast Bruce Willis, Kristen Stewart and Jesse Eisenberg in his latest movie. As usual with Allen's projects at this stage, the film is untitled and there are no details, though it's being produced by Letty Arsonson, Stephen Tenenbaum and Edward Walson.

Kristen StewartKristen Stewart will star in Woody Allen's latest movie, alongside Bruce Willis and Jesse Eisenberg

It's an eye-striking and typically varied and unusual cast and Allen remains one of the few directors who signs up talent without showing them a script. Everybody wants to work with Allen and the general rule of thumb is: if you're asked, you take the job. Cate Blanchet won the Oscar for Best Actress in 2014 after starring in Allen's Blue Jasmine.

Vice Trailer

Imagine a world where all your deepest darkest fantasies can be played out with no repercussions. That's exactly what Julian Michaels' new resort Vice offers; a glimpse into the lawless world of crime and illicit sex for the usual casual observers, but where everything is reset at the end of their vacation. Populating the resort are artificially intelligent androids, whose memories are wiped at the end of each day. Heavily against the idea of allowing people to indulge in their most depraved desires is Roy; a vigilante who crashes the resort and meets Kelly - a robot who it appears has become slightly damaged after experiencing a series of flashbacks. As she is taken away for repairs, she escapes the facility and ends up teaming with her designer in a bid to save humanity from destroying itself.

Sin City: A Dame To Kill For Review

Very Good

It's taken nearly 10 years for filmmaker Robert Rodriguez and graphic novelist Frank Miller to get around to making this sequel, but it was worth the wait because the technical advancements make this second triptych of stories even more visually stunning, and the emotional resonance is even stronger. This is a lean, mean noir thriller that doesn't waste a single moment as it rips through three interlocking plots that centre on revenge for the events of the first movie.

Two people are out to get even with the ruthlessly nasty politician Roark (Powers Booth). Watched over by the hulking Marv (Mickey Rourke), gun-toting stripper Nancy (Jessica Alba) is still heartbroken after Roark killed her beloved Hartigan (Bruce Willis), who appears to her as a ghostly apparition. And Johnny (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is determined to bring Roark down by humiliating him at his own high-stakes poker game, even though merely having uncanny good luck might not be enough. But the main story centres on private eye Dwight (Josh Brolin), who is stopped in his tracks when he encounters his old flame Ava (Eva Green), a bombshell who has power over most men she meets. She asks for help with a domestic problem, and Dwight is powerless to walk away even though he knows something is fishy.

As before, these stories unfold exactly as they would in a graphic novel, with blunt dialogue and strikingly visual imagery black and white that's spotted with flashes of colour. Aside from Ava's blue coat, that colour is usually red: hair, nails, lips, but not blood, which splashes in glaring white. It looks fantastic in (ahem) eye-popping 3D. And it's fiercely violent as death hovers around the residents of Basin City, especially the lawless Old Town district. But there's just as much emphasis on surging passion, including some surprisingly graphic sexuality that plays up how helpless men are around a scantily clad woman. Indeed, it's rare to see an action film in which the women are so resolutely in charge.

Who Is Bruce And Demi's Daughter, Scout Willis?

Scout Willis Bruce Willis Demi Moore

Bruce Willis and Demi Moore’s 22 year old daughter Scout has hit the headlines after launching a topless protest against Instagram after they shut down her account for ‘violating community guidelines.’ Thanks to the pictures posted to Willis’s twitter account, we’ve now seen quite a lot of Scout, but what do we actually know about Bruce and Demi’s second daughter?

Scout WillisScout Willis posted topless pictures on twitter this week

Scout Willis was born on July 20th 1991 to the Brad and Angelina of their day, Bruce Willis and Demi Moore. Back then tabloids didn't make up annoying nicknames for famous couples so sadly they were just Bruce and Demi, not Deuce. The couple had married in November 1987 after meeting at the premiere for Stakeout. Scout’s elder sister Rumer was born in 1986 and the youngest of the three girls Tallulah came along in February 1994.

Michael Jordan Is A Dad Again! 5 Other Stars Who Kept On Having Kids Into Their 50's

Michael Jordan Steve Martin Elton John David Furnish Bruce Willis Emma Heming Clint Eastwood Simon Cowell

Michael Jordan is looking forward to becoming a dad for what will be the fourth time, with his much-younger wife Yvette Prieto, it was reported earlier this week. First reported by www.terezowens.com, the pregnancy comes some months after the pair tied the knot in April this year, after five years of dating, and whilst Jordan might be in his 50's now, this could very well be the founding of another family for the NBA legend.

Michael Jordan
Michael and Yvette might not be finished in the baby-making-department yet

Jordan isn't alone becoming a father well into middle age, as the celebrity world is full of older fathers. Some, like Jordan, have gone on to start new families in their advanced years following a divorce or loss of partner (or maybe even a scandal of some sort), whilst others like to leave it late before finally settling down and having offspring. Here, we look at five older gentlemen who waited until after their 50th birthday before having children.

Tina Fey Suffers 'Another Nip Slip' In SNL Promo Clip

Tina Fey has let it all hang out again! This time though, she did it on purpose, as the award-winning comic writer mocked her apparent 'nip slip' at the at the Emmys last weekend (22 Sept.) during a promo clip for her upcoming appearance on Saturday Night Live. Fey is returning to the show where she made her name to host the first episode of the 39th season of the variety program when it returns this Saturday, 28 September.

Will Miley Cyrus Bring Twerking To SNL? Singer Announced As Guest Host For New Season

Miley Cyrus Tina Fey Bruce Willis Arcade Fire Katy Perry Bill Hader Jason Sudeikis

Miley Cyrus will have a chance to redeem herself in the eyes of her peers, to an extent at least, when she takes on hosting duties on the second week of Saturday Night Live's next season. The hit sketch show will return for it's 39th season on 28 September, with Cyrus standing in as host the following week.

Miley Cyrus
Miley Cyrus will host the second week of the new season

Tina Fey will return to the show where she made her name as the host of the first week of the new season, with Arcade Fire serving as her musical guest. The week after that will be The Miley Cyrus Show, with the oft-talked about star serving as both host and musical guest in what will no doubt be a sure fire way to boost the ratings, for better or worse. Her 5 October performance can work one of two ways for Miley, either she talks her recent behaviour in good jest and routinely lampoons herself and her newly acquired stage antics, or she gets all uppity and people stop pitying her and start actually hating her. Hopefully, it'll be the first option.
