Executives at America's NBC network have announced plans to turn the star-studded films into a TV series, and the screenwriters behind the 2010 hit and its 2013 sequel, Jon Hoeber and Erich Hoeber, have signed on to work on the adaptation.

Red, inspired by the comic book series of the same name, starred Willis, Mirren, Morgan Freeman, John Malkovich, Mary-Louise Parker and Karl Urban as former CIA operatives in a group called RED (Retired Extremely Dangerous), who find themselves back in action.

The original film grossed nearly $200 million (£125 million) at the worldwide box office, while the follow-up brought in $148 million (£92.5 million).
