Now that we’ve viewed the epic trailer for the ‘Godzilla’ reboot, we’re more excited than ever to see the legendary monster tear up our screens again. This new ‘Godzilla’ promises to be different than any of it’s previous big screen outings. We can’t wait for its release this May, but until then here’s everything you need to know about the new movie.

This Is A Different 'Godzilla'

Whilst staying close to the original 1954 Japanese ‘Godzilla’ movie, this version, which coincides with the monster’s sixtieth birthday, is set to reimagine the famous kaiju. ‘Godzilla’s’ 1998 American outing was just a little to camp for some. But this time things are going to be a whole lot darker and more serious for the big screen monster. Script writer Frank Darabont described the approach when writing the movie, saying "what we’re trying to do with the new movie is not have it camp, not have it be campy. We’re kind of taking a cool new look at it. But with a lot of tradition in the first film." The plot will focus on a family with the emphasis being on the human characters and their reaction to the destruction rather than the monster itself.

It Has An Impressive Cast

The cast of actors that will be bringing the human side to this classic monster story is pretty impressive. Leading is English actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson, whom you may remember from ‘Kick Ass’ and ‘Kick Ass 2’. He will be playing Lieutenant Ford Brody, a solider caught up in the fight against the monster. His wife Elle will be played by ‘Silent Hill’s’ Elizabeth Olsen. The actress is best known for her dramatic roles and was quick to comment on how this is a much more serious and dramatic movie than people may expect. She told BAFTA reporters, "...someone earlier was saying ‘Oh, that’s so crazy you’re doing something like moving from a serious drama to something as lighthearted as Godzilla.’ Well, all I could say it’s not lighthearted. It’s kinda going back to its roots of the original Japanese film." ‘Breaking Bad’s’ Bryan Cranston will play Brody’s father, a nuclear physicist. From the trailer it seems he is right in the centre of the fight to find out the truth about what is happening at the government. The actor has compared the film’s intensity to that of ‘Jaws’. There’s also a terrific supporting cast, featuring Juliette Binoche and Japanese actor Ken Watanabe, known for his role in ‘The Last Samurai’.

It Has A Hot Young Director

There was some initial worries when British director Gareth Edwards was announced as taking the reigns of the Godzilla reboot. He only made his feature debut in 2010, with ‘Monsters’. However his work on the indie flick earned him a 2011 BAFTA nomination in the ‘Outstanding Debut by a British Director’ category. However the ability to humanise the subject of aliens in ‘Monster’ means he seems a pretty perfect fit to take the ‘Godzilla’ movie in this new direction. He said of the project, "I’ve always been interested in Godzilla and the ideas around him. I really wanted to see another Godzilla film and jumped at the opportunity. My main idea was to imagine ‘If this really happened, what would it be like?’ I want to take a grounded, realistic approach to a Godzilla film."

The Monster

Of course everybody is wondering what the actual monster will be like. Whilst you can't see much of it from the trailer, Edwards has also promised that this will be the tallest ‘Godzilla’ ever, however they've made sure they are also able to hide him. Also don't expect him to be anything less than a total destroyer, he's been described by Edwards as "like a force of nature, like the wrath of God or vengeance for the way we’ve behaved. If this really happened, it would be like Sept. 11. I want it to be epic. I want to get the hairs on the back of your neck up." What’s also exciting is that Godzilla wont be the only monster. There’ll be other monsters, but Edwards is keen to keep what they are under wraps However he did tell Comic con in June, 'he will be meeting other creatures, which people are speculating on, and any more than that I will neither confirm nor deny.'
