The Apes Have Taken Over The World (And This Weekend's Box Office)

Gary Oldman Cameron Diaz Jason Segel

It’s time for the most highly anticipated part of the weekend – for studios, anyway – the box office roundup! Excited yet? Well, neither were movie-goers this week. Apocalyptic sci-fi prequel Dawn of the Planet of the Apes won this week’s race with $36 million on its second weekend, according to Box Office Mojo. That counts as a 50% drop from its debut, but the Fox sequel had no trouble staying on top over horror sequel The Purge: Anarchy and the Cameron Diaz comedy Sex Tape, which is currently bombing in both reviews and earnings.

"Sex Tape" Is One Of The Few Things Less Sexy Than Its Namesake (Reviews)

Cameron Diaz Jason Segel

Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel’s new R-rated comedy Sex Tape may be all about doing it, but it’s not doing anything for the critics. According to its stars, the main selling point of this latest answer to The 40-Year-Old Virgin is that it’s relatable.

Jason Siegel
Much like its protagonist in some scenes, Sex Tape's humor flops around a bit, before sputtering out completely.

When asked about the raunchier moments in a recent CinemaBlend interview, Segel explained: “I’m more excited about honesty. And I think that painful honesty makes audience members feel uncomfortable in a way that’s really fun.”

Cameron Diaz - Baby-less And Happier Than Ever

Cameron Diaz

As a 41-year-old woman in Hollywood, Cameron Diaz is forced to do a lot of interviews about being a 41-year-old woman in Hollywood. Naturally, she has to answer the baby question quite a lot. In her recent cover interview with Esquire, the Sex Tape actress had Things to Say on the subjects of motherhood and aging in the public eye.

Cameron Diaz
Diaz made a conscious decision against motherhood, but it wasn't an easy choice.

"I like being forty-one. I love it. So much s**t just falls away. Fear, mostly. It's the best age. That's when a woman knows how to work things, or she doesn't care about that anymore. You just stop being afraid. You don't worry about what men think. You just don’t worry that time registers anything awful," she explained.

Why Did Kate Upton Struggle To Book Auditions?

Kate Upton Cameron Diaz

Kate Upton proves (yet again) that she can do high fashion just as well as Sports Illustrated on the cover of UK Vogue’s June edition. The model, now at the beginning of her acting career looks gorgeous and sun-kissed on the cover, shot by Mario Testino. The Upton/Testino/Vogue collaboration is a familiar one, but once again, it works. She is photographed in a vintage bikini, channeling her inner 50s pinup. Protographers and stylists tend to like that aesthetic on the SI covergirl, probably because she has the body type to pull it off.

Kate Upton
Upton's figure is more of a barrier in film than in modelling.

Upton’s feature interview, however, is where things really get interesting. The 21-year-old woman, widely considered the curviest non-plus size supermodel at the moment, recalls that it was precisely her body that gave her trouble booking auditions. Her first role is as that of a perpetually bikini-clad gigglebox in the Cameron Diaz vehicle The Other Woman. The movie was generally ill-received by critics and doesn’t really provide a lot of opportunities for Upton to flex her hypothetical acting muscles. Even so, it’s a role she had to fight for, the model recalls.

Kim Kardashian, The Nuclear Physicist? Critics React To 'The Other Woman'

Cameron Diaz Leslie Mann Kate Upton

We had high hopes for Cameron Diaz’s new movie The Other Woman. Both Diaz and co-star Leslie Mann have a proven track record for churning out some pretty decent comedy movies. While we weren’t sure about Kate Upton launching an acting career, the dynamic between the three in the trailer seemed promising.

Yet despite knocking Captain America: The Winter Soldier off the top spot, a feat which Rio 2, Transcendence and Draft Day all failed to do, critics have not been wholly kind about The Other Woman. Geoffrey Macnab of the Independent surmised, “The plotting is predictable, the cameo from Nicki Minaj is pointless and some of the humour is sadistic in the extreme, but the film yields at least a few chuckles along the way.”  While not completely slating the film, Macnab certainly doesn’t seem entirely won over.

The Other Woman Tops US Box Office, So Can We Call It The New Bridesmaids?

Leslie Mann Cameron Diaz Kristen Wiig

Despite the critics being less than enamoured with The Other Woman, this weekend it stormed the US box office even managing to topple the mighty Captain America: The Winter Solider. So far the female driven comedy has, unsurprisingly, drawn both favourable and unfavourable comparisons with 2011’s breakout hit Bridesmaids. So can we start calling The Other Woman the new Bridesmaids?

The Other Woman, follows three women who form an unlikely bond after finding out they’ve all been wronged by the same man, Leslie Mann stars as Kate, a wife who finds out her husband has been cheating with Cameron Diaz, a high flying lawyer. The two ladies then discover that the lothario, named Mike, also has another woman on the go, twenty something Amber played by Kate Upton. Instead of being mad at each other the three women decide to team up and channel their anger by seeking revenge on the serial cheater.

'The Other Woman' Does The Dirty On 'Captain America 2' At Box Office

Cameron Diaz Chris Evans

It may be easy to dismiss The Other Woman as an air-headed, girls' night-in, giggle-fest but its remarkable debut weekend performance has shown that this revenge comedy has a sting in its tail when it comes to the box office. The Cameron Diaz-led flick took $24.7m over the weekend, launching to the top of the movie charts ahead of last week's victor, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which came in at second with $16.05m.

Whilst it's unlikely that The Other Woman will have the same longevity or total gross as Captain America 2, its first weekend taking show that the comedy was underestimated by many, especially critics who largely gave the film laughably low scores. However, senior media analyst of box-office tracker Rentrak, Paul Dergarabedian, said he thinks the movie's PG-13 rating helped it snare the larger portion of the movie-going market.

Nobody's Laughing With 'The Other Woman', Least Of All The Critics

Cameron Diaz Leslie Mann Kate Upton Nicki Minaj Nikolaj Coster-Waldau

The Other Woman, starring Cameron Diaz, Leslie Man, Nikolaj-Coster Waldau and Kate Upton in her acting debut, is yet to be released in cinemas, but is already floundering in the review department. The film lays on the clichés with a heavy hand – Coster-Waldau is the uber-confident, uber-annoying cheating husband, Mann is his neurotic wife, Diaz is his mistress and Upton is his younger mistress. Neither of the women knows about the other two. Until they find out, that is. The biggest twist to recommend this movie is that instead of the plot devolving into the tired old catfight cliché, the three band together to get even with the cheater. They go on a vengeance rampage, presumably because that’s what the writers think scorned women do.

The Other Woman Still
The Other Woman shoots for originality, but ultimately stops at mediocrity.

The LA Times’ review gives credit where credit is due – the plot isn’t all that original, but the easy laughs are still abundant, at least in the beginning. Unfortunately, at some point The Other Women significantly dumbs down both its characters and its story, making it hard to watch through to the end. “Slyness, slapstick and sex can often be mixed to amusing effect whatever the specifics — the original "Hangover," for example, did a credible job of it — but "The Other Woman" is ultimately undone by its indecision,” writes Betsey Sharkey.

First "Annie" Trailer, Starring Quvenzhane Wallis, Makes Its Way Online

Quvenzhane Wallis Jamie Foxx Cameron Diaz Will Gluck

Calling all musical theater fans. Not only is the Annie movie officially coming to a screen near you soon, there’s also a trailer and everything. Just a heads up: there are two kinds of people – those who get emotional during Annie and those, who don’t have hearts. With that said, let Quvenzhane Wallis melt your heart in just the short time of the trailer.

Watch it below.

A thirty-second teaser trailer and preliminary movie poster were released Wednesday, showing Wallis in the title role, as well as Jamie Foxx as Daddy Warbucks and Cameron Diaz as the villainous Mrs Hannigan. The new clip, released by Entertainment Tonight, looks ever so slightly campy, what with Cameron Diaz’s strangely accented line “You think you’re better than me?” and the iconic Tomorrow, sung by Wallis, dramatically playing in the background. It doesn’t look like the problem is with any of the actors though – Annie was just never meant to be condensed into a trailer.

Despite A Great Cast, 'The Counselor' Gets Lost In A Crazed Mess Of A Script

Ridley Scott Michael Fassbender Brad Pitt Javier Bardem Cameron Diaz Penelope Cruz

The Counselor is the latest film from No Country for Old Men writer Cormac McCarthy, making his screenwriting debut alongside director Ridley Scott, with a film that explores the complexities of hustling, and the fact that no matter how big a shark you think you are, there's always a bigger one swimming nearby.

The Counselor
Brad Pitt and Michael Fassbender make up part of an impressive cast

The premise and the names attached tot he film all looked as though they fit into place, and The Counselor seemed to be the latest hot Oscar contender, however, upon closer inspection it looks as though the pieces were too big after all, and the film looks unlikely to stand up to expectation.

Cameron Diaz Is Miss Hannigan In Will Smith And Jay Z's 'Annie'

Cameron Diaz Carol Burnett Jamie Foxx Will Smith Jay Z Sandra Bullock Quvenzhane Wallis Emma Thompson Will Gluck Aline Brosh McKenna Rupert Everett

Sony have confirmed Cameron Diaz will be starring in Will Smith and Jay Z's musical re-envisioning of the hit Broadway musical Annie. Diaz has landed the role of Miss Hannigan, the cruel manager of the orphanage Annie initially lives in. Sandra Bullock was previously linked to the role and was involved in talks with Annie producers. However, it has been confirmed Diaz has the part.

Annie, initially a comic strip, was turned into a musical, opened on Broadway in 1977. The musical was turned into a film just five years later (1982). Carol Burnett played Miss Hannigan in this version, although her performance was slated by critics (as was the film in general which is still considered one of the worst in film history).

Is 'The Counselor' Set For The Oscars? [Trailer]

Ridley Scott Brad Pitt Penelope Cruz Cameron Diaz Javier Bardem Michael Fassbender Sylvester Stallone Robert De Niro

The trailer for Ridley Scott's upcoming gritty thriller The Counselor dropped yesterday, after the initial teaser was circulated in cryptic Russian. With a November release date, there's certainly enough time to build up anticipation for the film, which is written by No Country For Old Men screenwriter, Cormac McCarthy.

Michael FassbenderMichael Fassbender Filming A Scene From The Counselor

There may be added logic to the late-2013 release date however: to give itself the best chances for 2014 Oscars consideration. The Counselor stars Michael Fassbender (Shame, Prometheus) who plays a lawyer who gets involved in cocaine trafficking and ends up in over his head with the wrong people. According to First Showing, Fassbender teams up in business with a rich acquaintance, played by Bardem, as Pitt's shady criminal character comes out of the shadows as things take a turn for the worst. In an incredible cast, Fassbender's co-stars include Brad Pitt, Javier Bardem, Penélope Cruz and Cameron Diaz.Despite their cinematic fame and success, neither Scott nor Pitt have ever won an Oscar before, with Pitt apparently resigning himself to never winning, having said: "I don't play the Oscars game." November release dates tend to be awards friendly, due to being late enough to not be forgotten amongst the year's other cinematic releases but not too late as to have not made enough of an impression.

Kate Upton Goes Topless (Yes, Topless) On A Horse During New Photo Shoot

Kate Upton Cameron Diaz Leslie Mann

Men of the world rejoice because it's finally happened; Kate Upton has gone topless! During a recent photoshoot the model was taking some tantalising shots whilst riding a horse, but a pre-shoot de-robing led to her sweater puppies being unveiled and all was caught on glorious video by a cameraman who happened to be filming the photoshoot.

As we've learnt so far, Kate isn't the kind of girl who would usually go topless for a photo-shoot and this particular shoot she was wasn't meant to show off all her skin, but luckily that's exactly what happened. So here's what happened; Kate was on top of a horse wearing a plain jacket before the shoot took place, and then proceeded to take that off, then her bottom half off and then her bra too. She did try concealing herself with her arm when she took the final layer, but obviously that was never going to work.

The story was broken by TMZ earlier today (June 20), who also included a censored (sorry guys) video on their website. Unfortunately, the site (and ours) aren't able to publish the full, uncensored version, but it you look hard enough on the internet you'll probably come up trumps at some point. You know, for research...

Post Hip Surgery, Lady Gaga Attends Wedding In Her Regular Person Disguise

Lady GaGa Taylor Kinney Cameron Diaz

We’re used to seeing Lady GaGa in eccentric clothing, or almost nude or wearing a meat dress or at least some startling head piece. Her latest fashion statement has been even more surprising – she wasn’t making one. Gaga attended a friend’s wedding – as a bridesmaid no less – looking surprisingly normal in a pale pink gown along with the other bridesmaids and with a matching flower tucked between her flowing blonde locks.

The Twobirds Bridesmaid creation reportedly set the singer back just $388 or £250, according to Marie Claire – a far cry from her typical designer garb. Gaga dressed down (yes, it is a bridesmaid’s dress, but this is Mama Monster we’re talking about after all) for the wedding of her good friend Bo O’Connor in Cabo San Lucas. Unfortunately, she was forced to attend the wedding without a +1, because her boyfriend, Chicago Fire actor Taylor Kinney is currently off filming The Other Woman alongside Cameron Diaz.

But it wouldn’t be like Lady Gaga to let a minor detail like that one cramp her style. She used the wedding as an occasion to let loose and show off her new and improved slender physique. She has recently lost 30lbs, following her hip surgery. The surgery was reportedly the reason Gaga cancelled her US tour, according to New York Daily News.

Martin Scorsese To Create A New Show, Based On His Own 'Gangs Of New York'

Martin Scorsese Daniel Day Lewis Leonardo Dicaprio Cameron Diaz

TV Geeks everywhere will have something to look forward to, as Martin Scorsese is teaming up with Miramax to bring Gangs of New York to the small screen.

The series will be based on the eponymous 2002 big screen drama, which was directed by Scorsese and starred Daniel Day-Lewis, Leonardo Dicaprio, and Cameron Diaz. From the initial report, there’s a lot to get excited about. Set in the late 1800s, the TV show will explore the period far beyond the scope of the original film. It will focus not only of gangs in New York, but also Chicago, New Orleans and other cities around the US.

"This time and era of America's history and heritage is rich with characters and stories that we could not fully explore in a two-hour film," Scorsese explains his decision, quoted by Entertainment Weekly. “A television series allows us the time and creative freedom to bring this colorful world, and all the implications it had and still does on our society, to life.”

A Liar's Autobiography Trailer

The 'Monty Python' group are returning to our screens once more with 'A Liar's Autobiography: The Untrue Story of Monty Python's Graham Chapman'. It is not a Monty Python sketch, merely the uncensored screen product of Chapman's 1980 nonsensical autobiography that has been re-published three times so far. It includes the voices of the Pythons playing themselves and various characters as well as Chapman himself who conveniently recorded himself reading the book prior to his death in 1989. A number of special guests also make voice appearances as characters in the film.

'A Liar's Autobiography: The Untrue Story of Monty Python's Graham Chapman' is a bizarre animated comedy that has been directed by documentary masterminds Bill Jones and Ben Timlett ('Monty Python: Almost the Truth - Lawyers Cut') and Jeff Simpson ('The Strictly Come Dancing Story'). The writing is credited to Graham Chapman and David Sherlock who co-wrote the fictional autobiography, but alongside extracts from the audio-book are various soundbites from other Monty Python TV appearances and pays tribute to his untimely death. It is due to his cinemas everywhere from February 8th 2013 with a DVD and Blu-Ray release date of February 18th. It is also available on demand from February 11th.

Starring: Graham Chapman, Philip Bulcock, John Cleese, Carol Cleveland, Cameron Diaz, Margarita Doyle, Terry Gilliam, Andre Jacquemin, Terry Jones & Michael Palin

A Week In Movies Featuring: Star Wars, Gambit, Hitchcock, Movie 43, Now You See Me And Much More!

Lawrence Kasdan Star Wars Colin Firth Cameron Diaz Anthony Hopkins Melvil Poupaud

The big movie news this week was that Disney has signed Lawrence Kasdan to return to the franchise to write Star Wars Episode VIII. He cowrote both The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi some 30 years ago. Michael Arndt (Toy Story 3) is writing Episode VII, and Simon Kinberg (X-men: First Class) is working on Episode XIX.

While rumour has it that Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill will all be back for the new Star Wars movies, it's unlikely that Ewan McGregor will appear in them. But he was on hand this week for the London premiere of The Impossible, a true drama about the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami by Spanish filmmaker J.A. Bayona (The Orphanage). Bayona and McGregor were joined on the red carpet and a screening Q&A by costar Naomi Watts.

Two big British films open in the UK this weekend. The remake of the con-artist comedy Gambit sees Colin Firth and Cameron Diaz take on roles originally played by Michael Caine and Shirley MacLaine in 1966. And David Tennant joins Marc Wootton for Nativity 2: Danger in the Manger, the sequel to 2009's hit comedy Nativity! Yes, it's just as stupid as the first film, but it's also a holiday guilty pleasure.

Gwyneth Paltrow And Cameron Diaz Perform An Improv. Rap For Chelsea Handler

Gwyneth Paltrow Cameron Diaz Chelsea Handler Graham Norton

I'm not sure what's harder to believe, that Gwyneth Paltrow has just turned 40, or that she's duetted on a rap with Cameron Diaz, making fun of their close friend, comedian Chelsea Handler.

Diaz and Paltrow appear on camera, saying that they have heard that Handler is getting a new studio, and then launch into a rap, performed by Paltrow with the beatboxed beat provided by Diaz. They cover a variety of themes during the rap from Handler's promiscuity to her drinking habits and various taste in men with the final line exposing that “50 cent told us you like it rough” amid pelvic thrusts towards the camera.

It's unsure whether the pair intended this ever to reach light of day, or merely wanted to send it to their friend. However, Handler clearly considered the good humored jibes to be a less embarrassing for her than the thrusting would be for Paltrow and Diaz and consequently popped the video online.

Drew Barrymore welcomed her first child, and has named her new baby daughter Olive, reports US Weekly.

"We are proud to announce the birth of our daughter, Olive Barrymore Kopelman, born September 26th, healthy, happy and welcomed by the whole family," the couple says in a statement. "Thank you for respecting our privacy during this most special time in our lives." Barrymore married art consultant Will Kopelman back in June in a Jewish ceremony at their estate in Montecito, southern California. They began dating back in 2010. Cameron Diaz, Reese Witherspoon, Jim Toth and Jimmy Fallon were among those who attended the ceremony. "Everyone knows the baby's coming, so there wasn't much talk about it," a source revealed about Drew Barrymore’s wedding. "Will said something like, 'I'm excited to marry you. I'm excited to meet the newest member of our family.” It seems as though babies were always on the cards for the couple: "They have been trying to get pregnant," one source shared. "That's why they got engaged . . . They are very happy! She's ready to settle down and be a mom."

Barrymore has come a long way since her cinematic bow in the sci-fi family epic E.T. She has now played myriad roles in films like The Wedding Singer, Scream and Charlie’s Angels, as well as performing voice-acting roles in Family Guy and The Simpsons. And she can now add the role of proud mum to her impressive discography. Kopelman is the son of former Chanel executive Arie Kopelman.

Gambit Trailer

Harry Deane is a pretty hopeless British art curator who has suffered years of condescension and disrespect at the hands of his preposterously rich and eccentric boss that is the renowned art collector Lionel Shabandar. Frustrated at his own lack of recognition in the art world, Harry decides to organise an elaborate plot of revenge on his employer by tricking him into buying a seemingly priceless Monet painting that happens to be a fake. As part of his cunning ploy, he travels to the states and meets a stunning, blonde Texas cowgirl who he enlists to help him by posing alongside her grandmother as inheritors of the valuable piece. He takes her to England where Shabandar is immediately taken with her and goes to all lengths to charm her. Harry's affection for Nicole is also growing and his jealousy of the two of them results in more than one embarrassing situations.

This flamboyant crime comedy is a remake of the 1966 Academy Award nominated film of the same name which starred Michael Caine ('The Dark Knight', 'Children of Men') and Shirley MacLaine ('The Apartment', 'Terms of Endearment'). Not only has this 2012 movie also got an all-star cast, it has been written by the multi-Oscar winning writing brothers Ethan Coen and Joel Coen ('No Country for Old Men', 'Fargo', 'True Grit') as well as being directed by Michael Hoffman ('One Fine Day', 'The Emperor's Club'). It's set for release in the UK on November 21st 2012.

Starring: Colin Firth, Cameron Diaz, Alan Rickman, Stanley Tucci, Cloris Leachman, Tom Courtenay, Togo Igawa, Anna Skellern

Bad Teacher Trailer

Elizabeth should never have become a teacher, her teaching technique is somewhat 'hands off'; she swears, drinks, smokes pot and is generally a terrible influence on the children. Stuck in a job she hates, she's just waiting for the day when a rich man asks her to marry him and once and for all she can put this daily nightmare behind her.

Vanilla Sky Review

Good
The single best scene in Vanilla Sky, and maybe in the entire year of cinema, takes place right at the beginning of this film. On the surface it's not anything that special, just a scene of Tom Cruise, running panicked through Times Square in New York City. Only Times Square is completely devoid of traffic or pedestrians. As is every street we can see down. New York, effectively, is empty. Whether this was done legitimately or with digital effects (or a combination of both), I don't know. And I couldn't tell, either. It's a powerful shot to launch what should have been a powerful movie.

Sadly, it's a bit downhill from there. While Vanilla Sky is a solid effort, it's unfortunately short of genius. The very project is a bit curious. Is Cameron Crowe, the permanent teenager responsible for perfectly good yet light-as-a-feather comedies like Jerry Maguire and Almost Famous, up to the challenge of remaking a Spanish psychodrama? Crowe goes through the motions, and from time to time he proves that he can handle heavier material, but Vanilla Sky is too murky to be much more than a holiday distraction -- far from the cult classic that the original Abre los Ojos (Open Your Eyes) has become.

Shrek 2 Review

Very Good
When Prince Charming (Rupert Everett) pulls off his helmet to reveal a hairnet in the first minute of Shrek 2, it's clear the sequel intends to match the wit and style of its predecessor. Fortunately it succeeds, finding new targets for its fairy-tale bashing humor. The result is the kind of summer escapism you don't need to lower your expectations to enjoy.

The sequel begins where part one left off. Ogre Shrek (Mike Myers) and his now equally ogre-rific wife Fiona (Cameron Diaz) embark on a hilarious honeymoon montage, complete with mermaid-tossing. They return to find Donkey (Eddie Murphy) still fulfilling his role as "annoying talking animal." Before they can kick him out, however, they receive an invitation from Fiona's parents, King Harold (John Cleese) and Queen Lillian (Julie Andrews), who want to meet their daughter's new husband. Unfortunately, they didn't see the first film, and have no idea that their daughter is now permanently of the green persuasion, as is their new son-in-law.

Any Given Sunday Review

Good

There's only about 22 minutes of plot in "Any Given Sunday," Oliver Stone's innovative, bone-crunching ballet of sound and fury football, so lets get that out of the way right now:

Al Pacino stars as the embattled, old-school coach of a fictitious pro football team. Cameron Diaz, is the willful, profit-zealous daughter of the franchise's recently deceased owner. Jamie Foxx is a hotshot young quarterback whose know-it-all attitude and colossal ego threaten team unity. He's just replaced the injured, aging, Elway-esque veteran QB Dennis Quaid, whose compound back injury has spelled curtains for his career -- if only his ruthlessly ambitious, harpy of a wife (Lauren Holly) would accept that fact.

During the last two minutes of the fourth quarter of the Big Playoff Game that serves as the film's climax, each of these characters (especially the selfish ones) will have an epiphany about what's really important in their lives.

Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz And Lucy Liu Strip For 'Charlie's Angeles' Director

Drew Barrymore Cameron Diaz Lucy Liu McG Motley Crue

The stars of 'Charlie's Angels' - Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz and Lucy Liu - are apparently so close to and comfortable with director McG that they once stripped off for him. McG, who's real name is Joseph McGinty Nichol, explained the incident when his leading ladies stripped in the back of a van while attending the Super Bowl of Motorcross.

The director recalled: "They're all very free with their physicality. They've all seen me naked, I've seen them naked. That's how we get down. We got a big limo van, put on old Motley Crue records, and Drew and I stripped down. It's sort of fabulous the way we all trust on another, most particularly Drew. Drew is very into the body, very natural. It's a splendid thing."
