Candy Says - Not Kings Album Review

It's been an unusual transition for  Juju, previously of Island Records' Little Fish, going from major label success to the very DIY ethic of Candy Says and it's hard not to have a deep respect for that. Recording in a garage with only the most basic of studio equipment, Candy Says impressed us with their 2013 single releases 'Melt Into The Sun' and 'Favourite Flavour' and now they're here with their full-length debut album 'Not Kings'.

Candy Says - Not Kings Album Review

The title track opens this pretty unique collection of songs with a strong and deliberate rhythm and a thrillingly optimistic pop vibe. It sets the album up well for what to expect; well-structured electronic compositions and infectiously repetitive lines all the way through: 'Gotta get out before my heart explodes'.

There's plenty more of that in the first half of the record; 'Favourite Flavour' is another uplifting number, even more catchy but with dreamier vocals. It's arguably the most memorable track on the entire album - though that doesn't make it the best. If we're talking best song, then 'Lord's Mistake' is a strong contender with its funky guitar riffs and Juju's vocals entering rock terrain. There's a few curveballs in there too like 'Hummingbird' which has a 60s lounge music feel about it and the partly spoken word 'Dreamers' which sees the synths at their heaviest.

Candy Says - Kiss Kill

Oxford lo-fi DIY band Candy Says have unveiled a demo-style video for their upcoming single 'Kiss Kill' set for release on September 30th 2013 through Cool For Cats records.

The video is a fuzzy, pixelated performance, having been created on the now discontinued 80s machine, ZX Spectrum. It features various pixel animations and the band's performance of the track and includes retro synth undertones reminiscent of old computer games that really add to the vintage feel of the song. The four-piece remain genreless as the vocals here have an occasional punk edge to them, before going into an auto-tuned dance style - they may be difficult to categorise, but they're certainly still super catchy and unforgettable.

The single will be released as a limited edition coloured cassette ahead of their 'Space Tour' which will take them across the UK in September and October 2013. The video made its premiere at the D!Halt in Russia during what is known as a 'demoparty'; a gathering of fans of the demoscene which was an 80s subculture of computer programming and gaming. The band are currently working on their debut album in their own 'studio' - a bungalow garage in which they are armed with just two microphones and a Macbook.

A Week In Music – Kurt Vile Has His Own Day, Tom Odell Lives Up To The Hype, Candy Says Are Delighted & Kanye Still Thinks He's God

Kurt Vile Kanye West Tom Odell White Lies Muse Beware of Darkness Jimmy Eat World Michael Franti Candy Says Rolling Stones Studio Killers

Kurt VileA week in videos… It’s been a busy week for the languid voiced, melancholic entity that is Kurt Vile, and he’s topped it off by releasing a new video for KV Crimes – a song off his latest release Wakin' On A Pretty Daze. Directed by Tom Scharpling, the video riffs on the recent news that the 28th of August will officially be known as Kurt Vile Day. The actual ceremony will be marked by a free concert at City Hall from, guess who, Kurt Vile

Lack of sunny weather and increased austerity got you feeling down? Then the video for Michael Franti & Spearhead - I'm Alive (Life Sounds Like) will do a sterling job of perking you up, unless you’re averse to whistling that is. Drums and face paint at the ready; it’s festival season, and Michal Franti & Spearhead are getting ready for a summer of live shows with this seasonal video, full of fun and vitality. And drums. We mentioned drums, right?

While 20 years is a long time to develop that pop punk, emo, power pop or alternative rock sound – whatever you want to call it – it seems as though Jimmy Eat World still sound the same, not that that’s a bad thing. Their eighth studio album 'Damage' is due to hit shelves on June 11th 2013, and the video for their new single, I Will Steal You Bank conjures memories of their frenetic live shows with its nostalgic black & white style.

Juju Of Candy Talks About Her Transition From A Major Label To Self-Production

Candy Says

Candy Says have received a wonderful response to their new single 'Favourite Flavour' which was accompanied by unique video that truly expressed their vision and creativity. Contactmusic caught up with frontwoman Juju to discuss her foray into self-production after disbanding her previous outfit Little Fish.

Asked how she feels about the fans' response to 'Favourite Flavour', she insists that all that matters is her own love of creating. 'If you're constant with what you're doing and you enjoy it, then the rest is a bonus if other people like it but not the only thing that matters', she says. 'I just wanted to do something I really liked, and make good art.' She wasn't going to let lack of funds for proper equipment stop her either: 'When I started writing and performing Candy Says... I didn't have anything to go to a big studio, I didn't have a drum set. I had two microphones a crappy laptop and a garage.'

Candy Says - Interview

Interview with Candy Says June 2013

Candy Says are an up and coming, lo-chic, pop band who are maintaining the creativity and integrity of music by doing it themselves! After parting with her previous band Little Fish (previously signed to Island Records), Juju and her new ensemble are producing fresh unique pop hits with a quirky electric vibe, sure to make you disregard the fact that it's been recorded in her fellow band and roommates' garage. With their debut singles achieving notable, public and critical success Candy Says are sure to gain the recognition they deserve in the near future.

CM: So, Juju, how are you?
Juju: Very well. Very well, thank you.

CM: Your new single, 'Favourite Flavour', came out the other week. What's the initial response been like, from critics and, of course, your fans?
Juju: It's been brilliant. It's been better then we could've imagined really, I don't think you can sort out these things. You just have to put your head down and do something you yourself find inspiring and enjoy doing. If you're constant with what you're doing and you enjoy it, then the rest is a bonus if other people like it but not the only thing that matters. Obviously, I'm over the moon with the response. I didn't really have any anticipation if I'm honest; I just wanted to do something I really liked, and make good art, so that's the aim.

Candy Says - Favourite Flavour

Oxford four piece Candy Says are here with a bizarre, dreamlike video to their upcoming single 'Favourite Flavour' due for release on May 20th 2013 on a limited edition cassette tape.

The video opens with drummer Mike Monaghan eating ice cream on the couch before singer Ju Ju Sophie attacks him with a water pistol and runs away. He lassos her and tethers her to his pushbike, dragging her along. She appears to sprout large feathery wings and flies along with Mike while still attached to the bike. Along their journey through a partially special effect landscape, they are briefly chased by a drum band and encounter people of old-fashioned dressed in what looks like a floating art gallery suspended along the road. It sounds unusual because it is; it's difficult to imagine where this quartet's ideas come from. The song is just as dreamy and artistic, with catchy repetitive lines and a building, beautifully crescendo from the beginning. It's a lo-fi classically pop tune that perfectly encompasses the raw, DIY ethic of this band.

The band; who are Ju Ju , Mike, drummer and vocalist Elisa Zoot and organist Ben Walker; will launch the new single with their label Cool For Cats on May 22nd at Servant Jazz Quarters in London among a handful of other shortly upcoming dates across the UK.
