After a year living in the remote highlands of Scotland, the remaining cast members of experimental Channel 4 reality show ‘Eden’ have returned to civilisation – only to realise that nobody had been watching!

This time last year, 23 contestants were placed in the wilderness of Scotland and essentially left to fend for themselves in what was verging on a sociology experiment, to see what kind of society would be created, with the results being shown in monthly episodes.

However, fractious infighting occurred and discipline broke down, with some contestants being smuggled junk food and alcohol by relatives and a total of 13 people quitting the show over 12 months.

This week, the remaining ten contestants who had toughed it out for the full year had rather a nasty shock in store for them when they descended back to normality. Not only had Britain voted Brexit and Donald Trump become president of the United States, but all their ordeals had been for nothing after they discovered Channel 4 had axed ‘Eden’ after just four episodes.

This meant that seven months’ worth of hunger, in-fighting and reported sexual jealousy had gone completely undocumented.

Speaking to the Press and Journal, a local news outlet, nearby resident Maria Macpherson said: “The last ten have left. In the end the show was a joke. Some of the participants were even seen in the dentist at Fort William needing treatment after eating chicken feed grit. It has not done this area any favours – it has just not lived up to expectations.”

However, a representative for Channel 4 told The Mirror that the footage might be used later for one round-up episode.

“The appeal of ‘Eden’ was that it was a real experiment and when we started filming we had no idea what the results would be and how those taking part would react to being isolated for months in a remote part of the British Isles. That’s why we did it and the results, including the highs and the lows, will be shown later this year.”
