'Jupiter Ascending' Is More Eye-Catching Wachowski Fun

Sean Bean Channing Tatum Mila Kunis

The Wachowskis aren't the most prolific filmmakers, which is perhaps why their movies feel like events. When Warner Brothers shifted the release of their new sci-fi adventure 'Jupiter Ascending' back six months from last summer to this weekend, everyone smelled a stinker. But then this is Lana and Andy Wachowski, who have never made a truly awful movie. Although some might argue that point.

'Jupiter Ascending' stars Channing Tatum, Mila Kunis and Sean Bean
'Jupiter Ascending' stars Channing Tatum, Mila Kunis and Sean Bean

The siblings burst onto the scene in 1996 with 'Bound', an inventively moody thriller starring Jennifer Tilly and Gina Gershon as lovers who plot an elaborate heist. The film had great reviews, and has become a cult classic. Then three years later they released 'The Matrix', reinventing special effects with visually jaw-dropping gimmicks like bullet time. Although the plot itself wasn't terribly original, audiences flocked to see the film in record numbers, and also made hits of the less-beloved sequels 'The Matrix Reloaded' and 'The Matrix Revolutions', both released in 2003.

Jupiter Ascending Review

Very Good

Filmmaking siblings Lana and Andy Wachowski never do anything by halves. The Matrix was a genre-changing blockbuster followed by two head-scratching sequels that ramped everything up a bit too much. Speed Racer was simply too much eye-candy for most viewers. And Cloud Atlas' intertwined storylines left audiences both exhausted and exhilarated. Now they've taken on the space action adventure with unfettered gusto, creating an utterly bonkers story that can't help but keep us thoroughly entertained.

So it turns out that Jupiter (Mila Kunis), an immigrant cleaner in Chicago, is actually the recurrence of a powerful matriarch whose empire runs the universe as a big business. Her three children (Eddie Redmayne, Douglas Booth and Tuppence Middleton) are tussling over control, because their mother's re-appearance changes their inheritance rights. Chased by bounty hunters, Jupiter is rescued by Caine (Channing Tatum) and his cohort Stinger (Sean Bean), who help her navigate the complex galactic society to claim her genetic rights. But each of the three children has plans for her. And as she zips back and forth across the universe, Jupiter realises that she's going to need to rise to the occasion if she wants to save herself. And Earth.

The Wachowskis clearly understand that the story is far too complicated to make much sense, so they only provide enough information to hold the audience's interest. Large plot threads and characters pop up and disappear at random, while Jupiter's own journey lurches through a series of contrived set-pieces and tense encounters that feel oddly unresolved. But none of that really matters, because the film is infused with a sardonic sense of humour that makes it enjoyable. Even the bad guys are intriguing; there's not much Redmayne can do with his leather-trousered grump, but at least he goes for it. Kunis has a great time with Jupiter's continual sexy costume changes, while Tatum performs a series of action scenes with his shirt off for no real reason. All of the cast members dive in without hesitation, using sheer charisma to make the characters a lot of fun to watch.

'Jupiter Ascending': Well, This Is A Weird One

Anyway, now it's here. And it tells the story of Jupiter Jones (Mila Kunis), who was born "under the night sky", with signs predicting she was destined for great things. But wait! Caine (Channing Tatum), a genetically engineered ex-military hunter arrives on Earth to track her down and Jupiter begins to glimpse the fate that has been waiting for her.

Foxcatcher Review

Excellent

Director Bennett Miller continues to skilfully probe around the edges of true stories with this follow-up to Capote and Moneyball, although this is a much, much darker tale. Actually, it's such an unnerving series of events that it's not easy to watch, and its characters aren't easy to like. But it's so expertly shot and edited, with startlingly full-on performances from the entire cast, that it can't help but get under the skin and chill us to the bone.

It opens after the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, where Mark Schultz (Channing Tatum) and and his big brother David (Mark Ruffalo) both won gold medals for wrestling. But they need help with funding to train for Seoul 1988, and Mark gets a remarkable offer from billionaire John du Pont (Steve Carell) to start a wrestling team at his vast Foxcatcher estate in New England, which is known for the thoroughbred horses managed by John's imperious mother Jean (Vanessa Redgrave). Aside from wanting to stay home with his wife (Sienna Miller) and kids, David doesn't trust John, so Mark heads to Foxcatcher on his own. But John's obsession knows no bounds, and soon he lures David and family to join them.

Initially, John's interest in wrestling feels like a mere eccentricity, a way of creating a team of "thoroughbreds" to rival his mother's prize-winning horses. But Carell cleverly plays the role with an insinuating glint that makes us wonder what he's up to, and his wrestlers see it too, going along with his nutty plans simply because the money is so good. Then the squirm-inducing twists and turns start, as John introduces Mark to cocaine and everything starts to spiral out of control. Nearly unrecognisable with a prosthetic hook nose, Carell is genuinely terrifying because his performance burns so slowly.

'22 Jump Street': How Hollywood Sequels Can Learn From James Bond

Channing Tatum Jonah Hill

The central joke of Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum's follow-up 22 Jump Street is that sequels are by definition bigger and more complicated, but never quite as good as the original. Indeed, at every point the filmmakers one-up 2012's 21 Jump Street, from the fact that every crashed car explodes into a ball of flame to the new glass-and-steel headquarters for the undercover squad, just across the street from the old one.

22 Jump Street Review

Very Good

A consistently hilarious stream of in-jokes keeps the audience in fits of laughter even if there's virtually no plot to this follow-up to the 2012 hit 21 Jump Street. Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum revive their amusing double-act to poke fun at sequels and franchises amid silly set-pieces and starry cameos. And it gives filmmakers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller their second terrific comedy of the year, after The Lego Movie.

Following their successful bust of a high school drug ring, undercover officers Schmidt and Jenko (Hill and Tatum) are assigned by their grumpy captain (Ice Cube) to infiltrate a university and track down who's dealing the new drug whyphy. But both get distracted by life on campus: Schmidt begins a romance with Maya (Amber Stevens), while Jenko finds his meathead soul-mate in football teammate Zook (Wyatt Russell). With their partnership in jeopardy, Schmidt and Jenko must refocus on a spring break trip to Mexico, where they discover an old nemesis (Peter Stormare) on the loose.

Using a non-stop series of gags about how follow-up movies are more expensive and less original, the filmmakers go about proving this hypothesis with amusingly overwrought sets and a chaotic, derivative narrative that has very little momentum. Meanwhile, they pack every moment of the film with witty humour that's played expertly by Hill and Tatum, who rekindle their chemistry with a steady barrage of gay double entendre that reveals the movie's true nature as a brom-com. On the other hand, neither the actors nor the filmmakers are willing to push things too far, so they settle for silly vulgarity instead of any black comedy or edgy humour.

Huh? 'Jupiter Ascending' Given Last Minute Delay In Release Date

Mila Kunis Channing Tatum Sean Bean

Jupiter Ascending won't see release until February next year, it has recently been announced. The unusual, late minute move marks the movie's opening pushed back seven months despite promotion for the sci-fi blockbuster having reached a peak.

"With the July release date, they were just not going to make it on time," said Warner Bros. domestic distribution chief Dan Fellman, via Variety. "A lot of the issue for us was getting it ready for the international release, since the foreign territories need additional time."
