Biography

Charli XCX (born Charlotte Aitchison; August 2nd 1992) Charli XCX is a British popstar who shot to fame when she appeared on Icona Pop's 'I Love It'.

Musical career: Charli XCX's first album, '14', was given away to attendees at her earliest gigs, which happened to be illegal raves. She signed to Asylum

Records in 2010 and gained recognition for her singles 'Stay Away' and 'Nuclear Seasons' in 2011.

In 2012, she released two mixtapes - 'Heartbreaks and Earthquakes' and 'Super Ultra' - and toured alongside Santigold and Coldplay.

After co-writing 'I Love It', Icona Pop brought the track to number one, thrusting both artists into mainstream attention.

Her major label debut was 2013's 'True Romance' and the following year she released 'Sucker' which featured the singles 'Boom Clap' (which appeared in the movie 'The Fault in Our Stars'), 'Break the Rules' and 'Doing It' featuring Rita Ora. She had initially released the single 'SuperLove', before it was decided that it wouldn't appear on the album.

In 2014, she appeared on Iggy Azalea's chart-topping single 'Fancy'. That year she was also announced to support Katy Perry on her Prismatic World Tour.

In 2015, Charli embarked on her own Sucker World Tour, and announced that she would accompany Jack Antonoff and his band Bleachers on a co-headlining tour of the US.

Personal life: Though born in Cambridge, Charli XCX grew up in Hertfordshire and went to Bishop's Stortford College.

She has been writing music since the age of 14 and has the condition sound-to-colour synaesthesia, which means she sees music in terms of colour.

Charli XCX - Charli Album Review

Charli XCX is a name you'll have almost definitely heard due to her huge pop hits such as 'Boys', 'After The Afterparty' and 'I Love It' with Icona Pop. Aside from her mainstream success, she's actually come out with some of the most forward-thinking, fresh pop records of the decade. 2016's 'Vroom Vroom' EP kickstarted this, seeing Charli team up with mind-bending, pop futurist producer SOPHIE, and following that with 2017's 'Number 1 Angel' and 'Pop 2' mixtapes on which she collaborated with various producers from the similarly innovative PC Music label.

Charli XCX - Charli Album Review

It's not just a case of Charli being blessed with excellent producers though, she's a star who often wears her heart on her sleeve amongst these bubble-gum tunes and takes us along on her journeys. She's back with her self-titled album 'Charli' where she continues to grow.

'Next Level Charli' opens the record with lots of sparkle, pumping adrenaline as dazzling keys and ethereal airiness build up, Charli rapping in her in-your-face pace. There's plenty of rich escapism in the lyrics too, Charli talking about her fast life, with plenty of pedal-to-the-metal imagery.

Charli XCX Defends Rita Ora's Controversial 'Girls' Record

Rita Ora Charli XCX

The women of the LGBT community have reacted with fury over Rita Ora's new song 'Girls', featuring Cardi B, Bebe Rexha and Charli XCX, because of its depiction of female same-sex relationships. Charli XCX has responded to the backlash in a recent interview, defending her collaborator over her choice of song.

The outrage has been over the stereotypical girl-on-girl lyrics, including the suggestion of a threesome with a man and that the protaganist has been stoned and drunk while engaging in lesbian trysts. It's, frankly, a harmful exploration of such a relationship that panders to the male fantasy rather than any kind of realistic love affair.
