Brown's probation stems from 2009 case in which he was found guilty of assaulting his then-girlfriend, Rihanna. The assault occurred hours before the 2009 Grammy Awards in February 2009. Brown's fans were shocked when the horrific images of Rihanna's severely bruised face, taken by police shortly after the assault, were leaked online. The former couple reconciled in 2012 but separated the following year.

Brown has struggled to complete the terms of his probation and spent two months in prison after assaulting a man in Washington in October 2013. Brown was also involved in a hit-and-run in 2013 but charges were not pressed. In 2014, he was been present at the scenes of two shootings which, according to the Mail Online, caused some concern with Brown's probation officer and the L.A. District Attorney's Office.

Brown was performing at a club in January 2014 when shots were fired and five people were injured. Brown was breaking his probation anyway for leaving L.A. without permission from the court. Another incident occurred in August 2014 when Suge Knight, who is currently facing murder charges, was shot at a nightclub in L.A. The court's decision to end Brown's probation has surprised many commentators owing to the number of probation breaches and controversies Brown has been involved in.

Brown shared the news on Twitter with his 14.1 million followers. 'Hopefully this is my last day in court. Pray for me,' 25-year-old Brown wrote before the hearing. A few hours later, Brown confirmed his probation was over, writing excitedly 'IM OFF PROBATION!!!!!!!! Thank the Lord!!!!!!'
