Original cast members Chris Diamantopoulos and Will Sasso will also return as 1930s comedy icons Moe and Curly Howard, respectively.

The Farrelly Brothers directed the 2012 release, but it is not yet known if they will be back for the follow-up, which will be penned by Redemption Song screenwriter Cameron Fay.

Earl Benjamin, CEO of production firm C3 Entertainment, says, "We're excited to be moving forward... on the next Three Stooges movie.

"With Sean, Chris and Will back as our Stooges and Cameron writing, this next film will be a truly unique blend of fast paced action with the hilarious mayhem of The Three Stooges."

The Three Stooges was made on a $30 million (£18.75 million) budget and banked just under $55 million (£34.38 million) at the global box office.
