Chris Moyles is reported to be making a surprise comeback to the nation’s airwaves by hosting a new breakfast show starting later this year.

According to a report in The Sun, the 41 year old Yorkshireman signed a “big money deal” with XFM to front a breakfast show that will apparently start in September this year. It would of course mean that Moyles will directly compete with Nick Grimshaw, the man who replaced him on BBC Radio 1’s breakfast show three years ago.

Moyles hosted the early morning show on Radio 1 for eight years between 2004 and 2012, achieving a peak listenership of just over 7 million by the middle of that period. However, he announced he would leave the show in July 2012 during failed negotiations for a new contract that would have taken him past the ten-year mark as its presenter.

Grimshaw, 30, who was recently unveiled as a judge for ITV’s ‘The X Factor’ for its upcoming twelfth series, initially oversaw a drop in ratings as Radio 1 overhauled itself to appeal to a younger demographic.

About Moyles’ prospective new show, a source said to The Sun: “It's a massive coup for XFM to be able to sign Chris. He was enjoying not having all of the usual pressures and early starts that come with breakfast radio so bosses were well aware that they had to offer him a great deal to entice him back.”

There’s no news on whether ‘Comedy Dave’ Vitty, Moyles’ on-air sidekick for many years, will be part of the new show. He and Vitty reportedly fell out in November 2012 after Moyles struck up a close friendship with Dave’s ex-wife. “He plans to spend the next two months developing ideas for the new show and how he wants the format to be. Chris will also take a networking trip to LA.”
