Star Trek Beyond Review

Excellent

This is where the Star Trek franchise officially shifts from thoughtful drama into thunderous action. Fast & Furious director Justin Lin brings a kinetic energy to this third chapter in the rebooted space saga, leaping between chases and battles to keep viewers on the edge of their seats. Combined with constant witty interaction, the film is massively entertaining, even if the plot ultimately feels a bit thin.

It's been three years since the crew of the Enterprise started their five-year mission, and they're in need of a break. So they head to the nearest spaceport for some down-time, which is soon interrupted when Captain Kirk (Chris Pine) and his team (Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg, John Cho and Anton Yelchin) are called to travel through a dangerous nebula to rescue a kidnapped crew from a villainous thug called Krall (Idris Elba). On arrival, the Enterprise is overwhelmed by Krall's bee-like military swarm. Stranded on a strange planet, the crew teams up with Jaylah (Sofia Boutella), a feisty survivor of one of Krall's earlier attacks. And as they realise the extent of Krall's evil plan, they're not sure that they can stop him.

The Finest Hours Review

Excellent

With its rousing, old-fashioned tone, this fact-based epic is properly thrilling and inspirational, a tale of heroism that almost seems too good to be true. But it's the astonishing story of a real sea rescue carried out by ordinary men who rose to the challenge. It's also expertly directed by Craig Gillespie (Million Dollar Arm) to bring out subtle character detail amid the exhilarating action.

The events took place in a sleepy Massachusetts fishing town in the dead of winter 1952, where Bernie (Chris Pine) is an earnest Coast Guard sailor who has just agreed to marry his strong-willed sweetheart Miriam (Holliday Grainger). Then one night a fierce storm breaks an oil tanker in half just off the coast, and Bernie is sent by his aloof commander Daniel (Eric Bana) to lead a rescue mission. He takes his colleague Richard (Ben Foster) and two young crewmen (Kyle Gallner and John Magaro) with him, heading into the dangerous sea swells. Meanwhile on the tanker's still-floating stern section, engineer Ray (Casey Affleck) becomes the leader of a cantankerous 32-man crew, steering the wreckage toward the relative safety of a shoal. And in these conditions, the odds are in nobody's favour.

Unusually, despite pitch-black conditions with driving rain and swelling seas, the on-screen action is crisp and clear. Gillespie uses vivid effects and clever camerawork to keep the audience right in the thick of things, conveying a vivid sense of scale while detailing the connections between each string of events. And because we understand what's happening and who these people are, the set-pieces are literally breathtaking. This is partially due to the fact that these are normal people who are very easy to identify with, from Pine's inarticulate but tenacious sailor to Affleck's reluctant natural leader. Intriguingly, Grainger's Miriam is the film's feistiest character, a woman who simply can't sit still and wait for news.

Chris Pine Felt Humbled By His Role In The Finest Hours

Chris Pine

The story immediately caught the attention of actor Chris Pine. "The script starts and pretty immediately you get involved in essentially a rollercoaster ride of human endurance," he says. "It was just a quick, wonderful, dramatic read. The ocean I find is very daunting, frightening, mysterious and powerful. That intrigued me."

Chris Pine stars in Disney's The Finest Hours

He was also drawn to the story because the characters are "honest, solid, blue collar men that go out and do great things and then go home". So Pine decided to play his character "like an old movie star would play a character in a 50s studio film. It was made by Disney, and there's something so earnest and heartfelt and of another era about it. It wasn't brooding or dark or edgy. It was just good storytelling."

Star Trek Into Darkness Given The Thumbs Up By (Most) Critics: Review Round-Up

Benedict Cumberbatch Star Trek Chris Pine Jj Abrams

Star Trek Into Darkness took the UK box office by storm this weekend, and judging by the majority of reviews for the film it's easy to see why. Holding a firm 87% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and a 89% audience rating, the film looks on course to be a great success and is likely to spawn future Trek films too.

Whilst some comment that the film lacks the originality and freshness of it's predecessor, given that it is a sequel this dilema was always likely to occur. But many have found faults in the film besides this, with a number of reviewers harshly criticising the film for varying reasons. The New York Times' A.O. Scott is particularly critical of the style over substance nature of the film, noting that the film "sacrificed a lot of its idiosyncrasy and, worse, the large-spirited humanism that sustained [the series]."

Elsewhere, Liam Lacey of the Globe and Mail was equally critical of the bombastic nature of the film, rather harshly saying that a full viewing of the film is akin to "surviving a long beating."

The crew of Enterprise all looked flawless last night on the red carpet of the Star Trek Into Darkness premiere. Zoe Saldana, who reprised her role as Nyota Uhura from J J Abrams’s 2009 film, graced the premiere in a futuristic looking black and white gown. Unfortunately, the breezy fabric meant she had a couple of brushes with a potential wardrobe malfunction, but at least she looked fabulous throughout. Her co-stars, Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto got decked out in classic ensembles in grey and blue. Newcomer to the series Alice Eve, on the other hand, decided to go with a strapless suede Ermano Servino number and she did not go wrong, looking perfectly polished throughout the night.

As the year winds down, critics are making lists and checking them twice to decide which filmmakers have been naughty or nice. Top 10s are appearing everywhere, along with awards and nominations and even some worst of the year lists. And most film fans are anxiously awaiting the emergence of a front-runner in the Oscar race.

So far the love has been spread around between year-end releases like Steven Spielberg's Lincoln, Kathryn Bigelow's Zero Dark Thirty and Ang Lee's Life of Pi, all of which earned key nominations from the Golden Globes last week and the London Critics' Circle Film Awards this week. Perhaps not quite so awards-worthy is the new Tom Cruise action romp Jack Reacher, which opens on Christmas.

Star Trek Into The Darkness Trailer Entices Us Further

Jj Abrams Chris Pine Zachary Quinto

The new teaser trailer for Star Trek Into The Darkness does exactly what it should do: it teases. The film isn't out until the summer of 2013, but these trailers have got sci-fi fans licking their lips at the next instalment of the Star Trek saga.

In a trailer full of action, which we've come to expect from director Jj Abrams, Pike tell Kirk, "There's greatness in you, but not an ounce of humility.  But there's going to come a moment when you're wrong about that.  And you're going to get yourself, and everyone under your command, killed." The film's synopsis give us our only clues to the plot line, while everything else is garnered from scrutinizing trailers. It reads, "When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis.

"With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction.
