'Jurassic World' Success Confirms Hollywood's Starving Us Of Our Favourite Creatures

Chris Pratt Steven Spielberg

The astronomical success of 'Jurassic World' just proves that dinosaurs aren't explored enough in film these days. Sure, people may be desensitised to the terror of the prehistoric monsters - at least, more so than they were in 1993 upon the arrival of 'Jurassic Park' - but this extraordinary re-telling has broken box office records.

It has its criticisms and, of course, it doesn't quite have the same effect on audiences as its original predecessor, but 'Jurassic World' has successfully managed to cast some much-needed cinematic nostalgia upon the lovers of the Steven Spielberg classic, so much so that its opening has become the highest-grossing debut of all time.

'Jurassic World' Was A Challenge For Bryce Dallas Howard

Bryce Dallas Howard Chris Pratt

Turning into an action movie star was a new thing for Bryce Dallas Howard, the actress better known for comedy-dramas like 'The Help' and '50/50'. But in 'Jurassic World' she dives right into the fray, all while wearing a white business outfit and high-heels.

To prepare for her role as park executive Claire, Howard trained with UFC champion Pete Williams, who was also her on-set driver. "He was so helpful," she says, "because as someone who is a professional athlete, he really knew how to take care of your body. And I was like, 'Hey man! I've got to do all this heel running, can you give me some tricks?' He was awesome, and really helped me."

'Jurassic World' Gives Chris Pratt Another Franchise

Chris Pratt

When filmmaker Colin Trevorrow cast Chris Pratt as the lead in 'Jurassic World', he had his doubts. At the time, Pratt was known only as that loveable goofball from 'Parks and Recreation'. "I really love improvisational comedic actors," Trevorrow says, "and you see them in my films again and again - Jake Johnson, Aubrey Plaza, Mark Duplass. So I just wanted to make sure that I wasn't bringing him in because that was a comfort zone for me. Ultimately we found something that certainly wasn't really improvisational and it isn't really that comedic. We found a real character."

Chris Pratt stars in 'Jurassic World'Chris Pratt stars in 'Jurassic World'

Before filming 'Jurassic World', Pratt proved his action blockbuster chops in 'Guardians of the Galaxy'. His new challenge was to play an animal trainer who has a relationship with his dinosaurs. "That's a tough thing to accomplish, especially when a dinosaur is an animated character," Pratt says. "So I did some research. I got to hang out with some pretty awesome animal trainers. There was one guy who trains vicious animals like bears, tigers and lions. I went to his ranch, spent the day seeing him interact with these animals, and this was a big part of the posture that I adopted. I just wanted this to be real, to create an organic relationship between man and beast that is going to strike some emotional chord in people."

Jurassic World Review

Very Good

With studios afraid of anything new or original, it's not surprising that the dinosaurs are back on-screen nearly 15 years after the rather disappointing Jurassic Park III. The good news is that this film has a clever script and solid characters to go along with the first-rate digital work. So even if the effects kind of take over the movie in the final act, it's still a great ride.

The massive island resort Jurassic World has been running safely for a decade off the Costa Rica coast, so it needs ever-scarier attractions to bring in visitors. The owner Masrani (Irrfan Khan) has been instructing his top scientist (BD Wong) to genetically engineer a bigger, scarier species, and he's come up with a beast called Indominus rex. Park manager Claire (Bryce Dallas Howard) has her doubts, but her velociraptor trainer Owen (Chris Pratt) is downright furious when he finds out. Sure enough, just as Claire's nephews (Ty Simpkins and Nick Robinson) arrive for a visit, the I-rex escapes and threatens the 20,000 visitors on the island.

The screenplay sets everything up in fine disaster movie style, with quickly explained back-stories to add some emotional undercurrents to the big-scale chaos. There's also, of course, a requisite villain in the form of the meathead Hoskins (Vincent D'Onofrio), who thinks dinosaurs could be used by the military and welcomes this catastrophe as a chance to prove his point. Thankfully, the cast dives in with gusto, adding hilarious personality touches to every scene. Pratt is terrific as the swashbuckling action-man, nicely set against the feisty Howard, who trumps him by doing all her action scenes in heels. Simpkins and Robinson have a lively adventure all their own that adds to the film's overall appeal. And there are superb side roles for the talented likes of Omar Sy, Judy Greer and Jake Johnson that add both humour and emotion.

'Jurassic World' Star Chris Pratt Contemplates Whether Or Not Kids Still Love Dinosaurs

Chris Pratt

Has the dinosaur become boring? That's what Chris Pratt questions on contemplating the themes of his new movie 'Jurassic World'. Yes, the original 'Jurassic Park' remains a classic, but the question is whether kids today are still both terrified and enchanted by these prehistoric creatures.

Chris Pratt in 'Jurassic World'Chris Pratt admits he'd love to see a real life Mosasaur

To the younger generation who are used to incredible computer graphics and enhanced horror on their screens, 'Jurassic Park' with its 90s fear factor and largely unconvincing animatronics (compared to what we have these days) may seem laughably unexciting - even if the parents still jump in terror at the scary bits. 'Jurassic World' is a brave attempt to re-capture that exhilarating cinematic experience.

Chris Pratt - Jurassic World Interview

Chris Pratt talks about Jurrasic World

'Jurassic World' star Chris Pratt talks about the themes explored in the new dinosaur movie, compared with what we saw in the original 1993 movie 'Jurassic Park'. Plus he reveals exactly which dinosaur he'd want to go and see first at the legendary theme park.
Colin Trevorrow takes over Steven Spielberg's original role as director in the film, which also co-stars Bryce Dallas Howard and Omar Sy among others. The movie sees the actual park on Isla Nublar officially open for business, but after a smooth ten years, they need something new to grip their visitors once again. Unfortunately, this turns out to be a major mistake.
