Christian Bale + Aaron Sorkin + David Fincher = Amazing Steve Jobs Biopic

Christian Bale Aaron Sorkin David Fincher Steve Jobs

Christian Bale could play Steve Jobs in the forthcoming biopic directed by David Fincher and written by Aaron Sorkin. Though the writer-director team is enough to whet appetites, the addition of Oscar winner Bale to the mix basically means this movie cannot fail. Sort of.

Christian BaleChristian Bale Could Play Steve Jobs

Bale, who recently scored an Oscar nomination for American Hustle, is very much Fincher's first choice for the movie considered a companion piece to Fincher and Sorkin's The Social Network.

So, Why Didn't 'American Hustle' Win A Single Academy Award?

Jennifer Lawrence Amy Adams Christian Bale

American Hustle may have a 93% fresh rating on review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, but it failed to woo the Academy at this year’s awards show. In fact, despite having received 10 nominations in various categories at last night’s Academy Awards, American Hustle didn’t take home a single Oscar. How was it that a movie so well received by viewers and critics didn’t take home an award for any of the categories it was nominated for?

amy adams american hustle Amy Adams failed to win an Academy Award for her role in American Hustle

The answer's simple really.  The competition at this year’s Oscars was brutal. The Best Picture winner 12 Years A Slave has been hailed as one of the most powerful movies of all time, so much so that it has been added to the American high school curriculum by the National School Boards Association. This elevates it from being just another movie with a weighty theme into something entirely more important. 12 Years A Slave has made history and in the process been recognised as being so significant that it can be used as an educational tool. How do you like that for competition?

Ignore The Bookies, It Could Be Leonardo DiCaprio's Year At The Oscars

Leonardo Dicaprio Matthew Mcconaughey Christian Bale Academy Of Motion Pictures And Sciences Bruce Dern Chiwetel Ejiofor

Let's ignore the bookmakers' predictions for this Sunday's Oscars (March 2, 2014). The people who devise these odds have not seen the movies and base their prices on critics' reviews and public opinion of movies, actors and actresses. The McConnaissance - see Mud, Dallas Buyers Club, Wolf of Wall Street and True Detective - has left bookmakers quaking in their boots and reducing Matthew Mcconaughey's odds of winning best actor to 1/9. It's true that his portrayal of Ron Woodruff is probably the best of his career, though the Texan is way off being considered a nailed certainty on to win the award.

Leonardo DiCaprio Wolf of Wall StreetWill Jonah Hilll [L] Be Congratulating Leonardo Dicaprio [R] At The Oscars?

Consider the alternatives: we've got Chiwetel Ejiofor, the star of the finest movie of the year, Steve McQueen's 12 Years a Slave. History suggests that when a movie gains a momentum at the Oscars, it can rattle through the categories taking awards that it probably had no right to win. Nobody would complain should Ejiofor take best actor on Sunday anyway, though McConaughey and Leonardo DiCaprio could find themselves with little chance if the Academy has voted for 12 Years in the same way it took to The King's Speech and The Artist.

True Detective Season 2: Which Pairing Can Pick Up From Cohle And Hart?

Nic Pizzolatto put the sincerity and quality of True Detective’s story over multiple seasons of the show, asserting that a strict 8-episode format would be condusive to a strong third act. And judging by the critical claim he’s received – his creation is being talked about in the same breath as The Wire – one is inclined to trust the man who risked everything to write the new HBO anthology series.

True DetectiveWoody Harrelson [L] and Matthew McConuaghey [R] as Hart and Cohle in 'True Detective'

“One of the reasons I wanted to do an anthology format is I like stories with endings. I like a good third act. And continuing serial dramas, they tend to have really good beginnings and really long middles and then sort of have to hustle to develop an ending. And I like the idea of telling a self-contained story,” explained Pizzolatto.

Jennifer Lawrence Stained 'American Hustle' Dress With Doritos!

Jennifer Lawrence Bradley Cooper Christian Bale Jeremy Renner Amy Adams Michael Wilkinson

For most of us, white dresses tend to be avoided due to the catastrophic stains which inevitably and quite magically appear all over the material and which are, quite inexplicably, impossible to scrub out. Fortunately, we're not the only ones and even the terribly glamorous and confident Jennifer Lawrence is not immune from destroying her wardrobe, even on a film set.

American Hustle
The cast of American Hustle, Jennifer Lawrence's pristine white dress can be seen on the far right.

Lawrence's white dress in American Hustle was the victim of Doritos stains and on more than one occasion. As a result, the film's costume designer Michael Wilkinson was forced to make a number of dresses for the clumsy star. Wilkinson, who is nominated for an Oscar for his work on American Hustle, was recently interviewed by Vanity Fair and he joked about Lawrence's junk food habits. He said "Jennifer Lawrence is a very, let's say, raw and intuitive young lady, and she's not against eating Doritos and snack food in her costume. So we were glad that we had a couple [of backups]."

Out Of The Furnace Review

Very Good

Coarse and not exactly subtle, this dark drama might disappoint viewers expecting a more traditional revenge thriller, but there's something more interesting going on here. And even though it starts at full volume and only gets more intense, the film is actually remarkably thoughtful and measured in its approach.

It's set in the Rust Belt, industrial Pennsylvania, where Russell (Bale) works in a steel mill and worries about his little brother Rodney (Affleck), who's deep in debt to a local bookie (Dafoe). Then a late-night car crash lands Russell in prison, and when he's released everything has changed. He has no job, his girlfriend (Saldana) is now dating the local sheriff (Whitaker), and Rodney is paying off his debts by fighting in bare-knuckle boxing matches. Even more perilous is the fact that all of this puts the brothers on a collision course with vicious local redneck Harlan (Harrelson), who has no intention of making their lives easier.

The film opens with a particularly brutal display of Harlan's menace, so we know what's coming. And as everything goes from bad to worse for our two heroes, the film feels almost aggressively harsh. Of course, Bale and Affleck are terrific as these damaged men whose fierce bond both helps and puts them into danger. And both actors let us see beneath the surface as their lives fall apart. In what could be the thankless ex-girlfriend role, Saldana has some surprisingly powerful moments. And Harrelson is a deeply terrifying force to reckon with.

Golden Globes Glory: Last weekend's Golden Globe awards set hearts racing ahead of March's Oscars with plenty of deserving winners next to a few jaw-dropping snubs. 12 Years A Slave predictably came out on top with the big gong but a few unpredictabilities set award odds and Oscars speculation askew. Newbie comedy Brooklyn Nine-Nine saw off rivals to claim two awards whilst Blue Jasmine's Cate Blanchett took the leading lady award alongside Dallas Buyers Club's  for the men.

Gravity's Alfonso Cuarón stole Best Director from Steve McQueen whilst Breaking Bad and Behind The Candelabra snatched the big TV awards. The surprise wins also made for some truly memorable speeches too, with Elisabeth Moss exclamation of "Oh s**t!" and Jacqueline Bisset's sweary ramble marking two particular highlights. The Women In 'American Hustle': Lawrence Is Brilliant While Adams Is Reinvented

Amy Adams Jennifer Lawrence Bradley Cooper Christian Bale

In Jennifer Lawrence and Amy Adams, Hollywood has two confident, assertive, talented and self-aware women, more than poised to fight the fight against the patriarchy that is 2013’s film industry.

And while their roles in American Hustle can’t be described as dominant, neither are they submissive and meek. Lawrence plays a housewife – an odd sentence to follow up an opening paragraph that hints at forward thinking and equality – but that she does.

American Hustle Review

Essential

David O. Russell deploys his deranged genius to explore the real events behind Abscam, cleverly focussing on the inter-relationships rather than the details of the elaborate sting operation. So under the wild 1970s hair and costumes, we have a series of characters who are never very likeable but are still hugely engaging. Which makes this one of the most prickly, exhilarating movies of the year.

As the opening caption says, "Some of this actually happened". It's set in 1978 New York, where lowlife conman Irving (Bale) is making a decent living with his girlfriend Sydney (Adams). Although his wife Rosalyn (Lawrence) knows something is up. Things get even more complicated when Irving and Sydney are cornered by FBI agent Richie (Cooper) and forced to co-operate in a complex scam to entrap mobsters and dirty politicians, including the likeable Mayor Polito (Renner), with whom Irving strikes up a friendship. As things develop, the sting continually threatens to spin crazily out of control. And Irving starts to worry that Sydney is getting far too close to Richie.

Intriguingly, even as the story gets more and more insane, Russell keeps the story grounded in the characters and the way they interact with each other. So their shifting relationships, power struggles and internal jealousies take centre stage, blurring the details of the undercover operation into the background. This may annoy viewers who want clear insight into Abscam, but it makes the movie much more involving. And it gives the actors a lot to work with. Each of them delivers a powerhouse performance that blends the character's distinct physicality with a complex inner life.

Batman To Batman: Don't Wee In The Suit. Bale Gives Affleck The Superhero 411

We thought Christian Bale might have some advice for Ben Affleck, but we assumed it would be some sort of grandiose speech detailing the intricacies of the character and the importance he holds to millions across the globe. Just ask Batkid.

But it wasn’t anything like that, he just told Affleck not to take a pee in the suit, which is basically telling an adult man not to urinate while he has his work clothes on. Good advice, really.

Christian Bale On The Batman Voice: "Thank God They Went For It!"

Christian Bale

As the Dark Knight, Christian Bale definitely left his mark on the Batman character – most notably in the form of Batman’s signature voice. The gravelly voice that Bale did has practically become synonymous with the caped crusader by this point, but according to a recent MTV News interview with Bale, it was all a happy accident. The actor recalled how the voice was a spur-of-the-moment decision, brought on by the fear that he wouldn’t fit the part.

Christian Bale, American Hustle Set
Following his departure from the Batman franchise, 2013 saw Bale film "American Hustle" alongside the likes of Jennifer Lawrence and Robert De Niro.

"I got there. They put me in Val Kilmer's suit, he recalled. “It didn't even fit properly, and I stood in it and I went 'I feel like an idiot.' What kind of guy walks around, dressed like a bat? And is then going to go 'Hello, how are you? Just ignore that I'm dressed as a bat.' Of course, he's meant to be doing this," Bale said. "If you look at the history of the guy and the pain that he went through. I went 'I can't do this in a normal voice. I have to become a beast in order to sell this to myself."

Batkid's Crime Fighting In Gotham Attracts Praise From Christian Bale

Christian Bale

5-year-old Miles Scott, aka Batkid wowed Gotham City (a transformed San Francisco) with his heroic antics on Friday. Miles has been battling cancer since he was 18 months old but on Friday, with the disease in remission, the Make-A-Wish foundation fulfilled his wish of being Batman for a day. The Foundation’s call for volunteers snowballed into a city-wide event, centered around the little boy and the news got so big, that even some actual (well, using the term loosely) Batmen reached out to Miles to congratulate him on his victory – as Batman and in real life.

Miles saved Gotham from the evil of The Penguin.

"I looked on the news and I saw this headline and thought, 'What's that?' And I saw all the pictures of him running around and saving people. It's so touching," "The Dark Knight" trilogy's Christian Bale told Vulture Saturday.

So by now we should all agree that Jennifer Lawrence can play any character, right? She’s equally believable as the teenage leader of a rebellion, as a mentally unstable 20-something widow and now, as a bored New Jersey housewife in the newly released clip from David O’Russell’s American Hustle.

American Hustle - International Trailer

Whilst running a con, being anonymous is very important. Keeping past operations secret and your personal life out of reach from potential targets is just as important as running the actual hustle. For years Irving Rosenfeld has been a con at the top of his game, evading arrest by the police and capture by past marks but all that could quite easily change when he and his business partner, Sydney Prosser, are recruited by an unruly FBI officer Richie DiMaso.

The target Rosenfeld has to hit is one even cons wouldn't usually mess with, an elected mayor the FBI believe to be dirty. Mafia connections and lots of Laundered money are the least of Rosenfeld worries, when his wife might just become an accidental chink in their armour.

Set in the 1970's the films screenplay was written by Eric Warren Singer and David O. Russell and is loosely based on a real sting operation named Abscam which lead to the arrest and conviction of a number of elected officials.

Ben Affleck Already Has Haters - He Hasn't Even Put The Batsuit On Yet!

Ben Affleck Batman Christian Bale

Just when you thought the hoards of comic book fanatics were easing up a bit, allowing their favorite franchises to sun themselves under Hollywood’s bright lights, they go and make a big fat petition to strip Ben Affleck of his newly appointed Batman crown.

"He's not intimidating enough for the role of Batman," said John Roden, the man who started the petition. "I would like to add that this petition was not meant in any way to harm Ben Affleck or his career. I respect Affleck's work, I just feel he is inappropriate for the role," added Roden.

Affleck was handed the role after a remarkable year saw him turn from a joke to a hero with Argo. The film landed him Oscar success, but, more importantly, it reinstated him to the pantheon of Hollywood royalty; a luxury stripped from him due to a heady couple decades involving bad films and public relationships. He overcame that road and is now a hero, anyone see the Batman similarities or do we have to write some more?

Warner Bros has begun principal production on a Justice League movie, which features Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman and the Green Lantern uniting to fight evil powers.

Bale played Batman in Christopher Nolan's acclaimed Dark Knight trilogy though speaking to Entertainment Weekly earlier this year, the Oscar winner confirmed he would be hanging up the cape.

Is 'Batman Vs. Superman' The Title Of New DC Comics Movie?

Henry Cavill Christian Bale David S. Goyer Zack Snyder Ryan Gosling

After Zack Snyder's Comic-Con announcement that Batman and Superman would meet on screen for the first time in a 2015 Warner Bros. movie and sequel to 2013's Man of Steel, there's now fresh knowledge from screenwriter David S. Goyer that the production team are mulling over a few specific titles. "We're already in pre-production," Goyer told a Comic-Con panel on Sunday. "(The film) comes out in summer of 2015 ... We're actually not sure whether the title is 'Superman vs. Batman' or 'Batman vs. Superman,' but yes, it's that rematch, that combination, the two guys onscreen and that's happening," as reported by the NY Daily News. The franchise will apparently eventually build up to match Marvel's Avengers movies with DC Comics' Justice League of America team that should also include Wonder Woman, Flash and Aquaman.

Zack Snyder Teases Fans With New Movie Concept.

Superman vs. Batman/Batman vs. Superman certainly gets the point across well: two opposing forces fighting it out. But to juxtapose the two characters in such a way seems a bit blunt; not least the question of superiority to whichever superhero's name comes first in the title. Secondly, the 'vs.' part implies the combatants represent antithetical concepts: good vs. evil, light vs. dark, heroes vs. villains, etc.

Ryan Gosling, Joseph Gordon-Levitt In Frame To Become New Batman

Ryan Gosling Joseph Gordon-Levitt Christian Bale Brad Pitt Zack Snyder Henry Cavill

Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Ryan Gosling are leading the race to become the new Batman, following the announcement at Comic-Con that both Superman and the Caped Crusader will unite for the first time on-screen.

Following the success of Man of Steel, it is likely that Henry Cavill will return as Superman, though with Christian Bale announcing his departure from the Batman franchise, the race is on for one of Hollywood's hottest roles.

As it stands, bookmakers Paddy Power have Joseph Gordon-Levitt as the 3/1 favourite to play the role, though many would regard it as an odd choice, given his role as 'Robin' in The Dark Knight Rises.

Zack Snyder Confirms That A Superman & Batman Movie Will Be Happening

Batman Superman Henry Cavill Zack Snyder Christian Bale

One of the biggest rumours to be circulating around this years San Diego Comic-Con International was the potential big screen team up with two of the most famous superheroes of all; Batman and Superman. These rumours were confirmed towards the end of the convention when Man of Steel director Zack Snyder told an eager audience that he and a team of others are currently working on the script for the superhero crossover, with Warner Brothers going on to confirm their involvement in the project shortly after the announcement.

Henry Cavill
Henry Cavill will reprise his role as the Man of Steel

Much to the delight of many of the comic book fans at the San Diego convention, and indeed to the delight of superhero fans the world over, a Batman/Superman crossover film has long be awaited and following the huge success of Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight trilogy and this years equally impressive Superman re-boot, Man of Steel, an eventual collaboration between the heroes had been expected. In the DC comic universe, the two have teamed up on more than one occasion, beginning with a slew of friendly team-ups in the 1950's to the 70's, before Frank Miller's The Dark Knight comics changed the complexion of their relationship to an antagonistic one where the two heroes barely see eye-to-eye on anything. The big screen hook-up will probably take the latter route.

Many comic-book fans have welcomed the announced as it is a step towards such DC 'Avengers-like' teams as the Justice League. Marvel's superheroes are considerable more integrated with references to the various Avengers in their individual films. A Justice League movie was rumoured to be in production earlier this year, following the success of Superman: Man of Steel, however Cavill confirmed no such film had been mentioned to him. Should the Justice League movie be shot, it would feature a team of superheroes including Superman, Batman, The Green Lantern, Wonder Woman and Aquaman.

Chris Pratt, the 34-year-old actor who has bagged himself some pretty tasty roles in recent years, is bulking up for his role in the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy movie. Pratt is the latest movie star to undergo a dramatic physical transformation and posted his progress in an Instragram photo this week.

It's not the first time the Parks and Recreation actor has changed weight for a movie role - he sported a hugely toned physique for his role as a member of Seal Team Six in Kathyn Bigelow's Osama Bin Laden movie 'Zero Dark Thirty' last year.

Christian Bale Wont Be Doning His Black Cape For The Justice League Film

Christian Bale Christopher Nolan Joseph Gordon-Levitt Henry Cavill

The Dark Knight trilogy has been lauded as the greatest comic book adaption series ever committed to film and has re-written the way Hollywood sees superhero movies, but Christian Bale has decided that when it comes to wearing the famed black mask and cape; three times is enough. The Oscar-winning actor told Entertainment Weekly that although he cherishes the time he had making the movies, he thinks it better to leave things as they are and not tamper with Christopher Nolan's astounding vision.

Bale wont be returning as Batman/Bruce Wayne

"We were incredibly fortunate to get to make three [Batman films]. That's enough. Let's not get greedy," said the Batman/Bruce Wayne actor during the interview to promote his new film, Out of the Furnace, adding; "Chris [Nolan] always said he wanted to make it one film at a time and we ended up sitting there looking at each other, saying 'We're about to make the third.' We never really knew if we were going to get to be there, but if that was how it was going to be, this was where it should end as well."

Henry Cavill: The Justice League Movie "Needs Building Up"

Henry Cavill Batman Superman Christian Bale

The Justice League (DC's version of Marvel's Avengers) movie will not, speculating from what Henry Cavill said in a recent interview, be in cinemas in the near future.

Should such a film be made would we see Cavill as Superman saving the world (or possibly the universe) alongside Christian Bale's Batman and Ryan Reynolds's Green Lantern?  They would, of course, be supported by a team of other less known superheroes: Wonder Woman, Martian Man-hunter, Flash and Aquaman.

'American Hustle' Resumes Boston Filming: David O'Russell's Movie Was Halted By Bomb Suspect Manhunt

David O Russell Christian Bale Amy Adams Bradley Cooper

David O’Russell’s latest movie, American Hustle, has resumed filming in Boston, after it was halted due to the city’s lockdown, after last week’s Boston marathon bombings. The Silver Linings Playbook director was filming his forthcoming movie, starring Christian Bale, Amy Adams and Bradley Cooper but was shut down by police on Friday (April 19, 2013) as Boston’s police force embarked on a manhunt for suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, The Guardian reports.

American Hustle tells the story of the FBI’s Abscam sting operation in the late 1970s. The movie’s production team is thought to have been the only one shut down during the manhunt and a spokesperson for Sony’s studio told Deadline that the shoot was due to resume today (April 22, 2013). The movie is loosely based on genuine FBI history and the Abscam sting which led to the conviction of a senator and five members of the US House of Representatives on charges of bribery and conspiracy, between 1978 and 1980.

The 19 year old bombing suspect Tsarnaev was eventually cornered and arrested in the Watertown area of Boston, a day after a shoot-out that left his brother dead. The two siblings had been accused of planting pressure cooker bombs near the finish line of the popular marathon. Three people were killed in the explosion and more than 180 were injured.

Nice Guy Bradley Cooper 'Really Hopes' To Become A Father

Bradley Cooper Jennifer Lawrence Christian Bale

Is Bradley Cooper the nicest guy in Hollywood? The Oscar-nominee is definitely up there. The A-list Hollywood star moved in with his mother following his father's death in 2011, to make it easier on her - they're still living together. "The best way I can answer that is to say we're [my mom and I are] surviving," he told the latest issue of Details magazine, "Both of us. Let's face it: It's probably not easy for her, by the way, to be living with her son. It's life. And right now, two years after my father's death, this is where we are."

The Silver Linings Playbook star nursed his stockbroker father Charles J Cooper through his battle with lung cancer, before watching him die aged 71. "My family is very close, and my dad dying was brutal for all of us," he explains, "It was a schism, and its aftershock has not stopped. And we need each other. So here we are.But don't get me wrong. It's not without complications."

Now, you'd probably assume Cooper - as a multimillionaire - had a huge guesthouse built for his mother. Not so. "She's in the next room. But here's the thing: She's a cool chick. We can hang, and she can roll with the punches. If that wasn't the case, there's no way." As for becoming a father himself, the 38-year-old says "of course", explaining, "I really hope I have that experience in my life.I saw how much joy fatherhood gave my own dad. So I hope it's part of my journey. You go through stages in your life, and fatherhood seems like a natural stage."

Gloria Steinem Defends Kim Kardashian: Her Body Is Not 'Public Property'

Gloria Steinem Kim Kardashian Christian Bale

Gloria Steinem, Christian Bale's mother, has fiercely defended pregnant star Kim Kardashian from recent media criticism regarding her weight.

The stringent feminist spoke out at the Annual Diane Von Furstenberg Awards in New York, telling Us Weekly, 'Our bodies are never public property under any circumstance. It's wrong, and people in the street who feel the right to touch a pregnant woman's belly ought to be arrested for harassment. Our bodies belong to us, and if we don't invite touching, we shouldn't tolerate it.' The defiant defence comes a little as a surprise as she has previously slammed reality shows. In 2011, after the New York Daily News asked her if the Kardashians 'empowered' women, she bluntly replied, 'They're not empowering other women', though added, 'there's no point in blaming the people who take advantage of the system without changing the system.'

Steinem was known in the 60s and 70s as the leader of the women's liberation movement and the founder of Ms. Magazine. She has spoken out on a number of gender related topics in her career including pornography, transsexualism and same-sex marriage. That she has most recently defended pregnancy stems from the barrage of vile abuse that Kim Kardashian and her curves have received from the press.

Christian Bale Bails On Daniel Espinosa And 'Child 44'

Christian Bale

Having been connected to the upcoming Daniel Espinosa movie 'Child 44', Christian Bale has in fact given the word and the word is 'no'.

The film has been waiting for years to be put into production, and has been in development since 2007. Originally Ridley Scott had been tipped as the director, but apparently his existing work schedule was just too much. Now, instead, Daniel Espinosa, a Swedish director who was responsible for this year's 'Safe House', has taken up the task, according to Yahoo.

Bale met with the producers on Tuesday (13th Nov 2012) to decline the role of Leo Demidov, the Soviet-Union lawyer who's employed to investigate the murders of numerous children during the 1950s, the era in which it's set. The film is based on a book of the same name, which in turn was based on the true story of Andrei Chikitalo who killed 52 women and children from the 1970s to the 1990s. He was executed for the crimes. Amid the paranoia and political tension of the Soviet Union during the '50s, Demidova ends up being at the centre of that paranoia. This theme is one that will run the course of what's expected to be a trilogy. Bale gave no reason as to why he is choosing not to be involved in the project.
