Warner Brothers have cancelled tonight's Dark Knight Rises premiere in Paris (July 20, 2012), out of respect for those who lost their lives, or were injured in last night's midnight-screening shooting in Colorado. Entertainment Weekly has quoted a statement from the Warner Bros. studio which reads "Warner Bros. and the filmmakers are deeply saddened to learn about this shocking incident. We extend our sincere sympathies to the families and loved ones of the victims at this tragic time."
The cast and crew of the movie, including Christian Bale and Tom Hardy, have also suspended all junket interviews for the time being. The Motion Picture Association of America has released a statement to the press, to say: "We share the shock and sadness of everyone in the motion picture community at the news of this terrible event. We extend our prayers and deepest sympathies to the victims, their loved ones and all those affected by this tragedy." Currently, the death toll from the shooting is stated at "at least 12." Many more are understood to have been injured in the incident.
The shootings occurred just after midnight at a movie theatre in Aurora, Denver, where movie-goers were watching a late-night screening of The Dark Knight Rises. Witness accounts suggest that the gunman used some kind of gas device before opening fire. It is thought to have been a canister of tear gas, though this has not been confirmed. The suspect has been named as James Holmes, 24. He has been detained by police, who are investigating the possibility of explosives at Holmes' own residence.
